D&D's 2024 Handbook: New Book, Same Issues?

Hello again! After the debut of D&D's New and Improved 2024 Player's Handbook, it would seem that I and a bunch of other fans of the TTRPG are confused over the new character creation system. Backgrounds determine your ability scores? Free feats (tied to your background) for everyone starting at level 1? If any of this sounds limiting when it comes to developing your D&D character, that's because it is. Today we'll go over Why it's limiting, why 2014's Player's Handbook was as well (But in my opinion, a good way) and why Wizards of the Coast seems to love ripping new holes in their system that they patched with Tasha's years ago.
If you enjoyed this video, please let me know down below! I'd love to hear about which version of D&D you enjoyed best, and WHY it's better. Looking forward to the discussion!

The price point of official Wizards of the Coast books has been extremely high. Their last price hike occurred around this time ago last year, when the physical books jumped from $49.95 to $59.95. I wouldn’t want to buy the online version either because, if I understand it correctly, your purchases are tied to your D&D beyond account, so if anything were to happen to the website I lose all my books. I’m interested in the new rule book though, and i’ll always prefer physical over digital, so i might have to bite the bullet and just order the book.

I was just thinking about this, I feel that race should still matter alot and that you already got feats for 2014 backgrounds literally called features. It just relies more on your DM to harness your backstory.

Having certain backgrounds be ideal for certain classes makes a certain amount of sense. It makes sense that Hermits (who get Con, Wis, Cha and the Healer feat) would make good Clerics or Druids and that Sage (Con, Int, Wis and the Magic Initiate (Wizard) feat) would make a good wizard. I do agree that Acolyte RAW will see very little play because of the three mental stats. Locking complete customization in the DMG was probably a business decision but this doesn't just allow WoTC to print new backgrounds in future material, it also allows third party creators to publish their own backgrounds. Variant Human was kind of busted because they could pick any feat in the game to start at level one. Having a curated set of origin feats, that don't come with ASI, is a good move imo. If your background doesn't come with the feat you want you could always play a human and get the origin feat you want plus your background feat. Having an incentive to play a boring human is never a bad thing.

It’s incredibly unfortunate that background customization is locked behind another 60 dollar paywall that also doesn’t release until 2 months after the Player’s Handbook. and while i does make complete sense that certain backgrounds like hermits and sages fit certain classes, not allowing you to adjust these backgrounds to better accommodate a character like in the original 2014 version is a big misstep on WotC’s part. I understand they want to make feats more obtainable to the general audience, while also steering away from hardcore players ONLY playing optimized variant human parties by introducing feats as a standard in backgrounds, but tying stats to it as well swings the pendulum too far in the other direction; Backgrounds were once merely flavor and a couple extra skills, but now it’s a major part of your character mechanics wise. Instead of variant ruling humans being the most popular optimized build across all classes, it’ll be specific backgrounds taking the spotlight instead. I think if they kept Tasha’s new ASI rules, and offered the backgrounds with mix and match tier 1 feats, most players would be very happy with that. Considering customization is locked behind the DMG, i believe your take on it would really be the best way to handle it. Using DM fiat to remove ASI from the backgrounds and place it back on races is certainly how I plan on running games at my table. Thank you for commenting!

@@KrazyKDice You had me until back on races. There is a reason Tasha's moved away from that and the reason hasn't changed. You don't need to buy the DMG to figure it out how to customize a background. You can probably figure it out right now.

@@XanderHarris1023 I mean, yeah, I can't imagine it'd be too difficult to create a custom background right now. Pick 3 stats for ASI score increases, your additional equipment and gold for the background, the level 1 feature, etc. It's more of the principal of taking a once free rule in the players handbook and making it an optional ruleset in the Dungeon Master's Guide where the DM can determine whether or not it is allowed. Also I just want to make sure I stated it properly, but putting ASI back onto races by using Tasha's rules for character creation, as in you get +2 to one stat and +1 to another stat of your choice, or +1 to three stats of your choice. I understand that the majority consensus for Tasha's ASI change was a positive one and it would make zero sense to revert back to 2014's for that reason. I think all backgrounds would have needed to make them feel more impactful was the addition of a thematic level 1 feat.

Orc wasn't introduce as playable until Volo and had -1 Int, do negative was erata, which left the Kobold as the only 1 ASI race in the game. The Multiverse Paid Erata switch Orc and Kobold to new +2/1 or +1x3. I wonder if WotC tried to copy PF2e Background, which gives 2 Ability Mods (not Score which was phase out) and a feat, yet missed Ancestry (Race/Species) and Class also giving Ability Mod. WotC is correct in placing Variant rules in the DMG, as players would need the DM permission to play Homebrew. Upgrade to 2024 is too expensive as buying the 3 books will cost me $84.97 (Legendary Bundle Discount) and then presuming I wanna use Found that's $112,5, which comes out $197,47. So SRD 5.2 in 2025 will be earliest I touch 2024. Now let's compare with PF2e Remastered with the presumion that we own CRB, APG, GMG and Beast 1. Paizo is nice and gives me the Reemastered for the low cost of Free (Digital) and using Remastered in Foundry will cost nothing, which brings the total cost to Nothing.

I’ve noticed a lot of people online have been comparing the new D&D rules to Pathfinder 2e, and It’s unfortunate that WotC is pushing D&D into a place that mimics it so much. It has its place as a beginner friendly fantasy roleplaying game, and i’d love to see it find new ways of revolutionizing character creation instead of picking and choosing things pathfinder discovered works well. The price point is another thing. That’s a LOT of money for a set of rulebooks, and it’s the same issue in the wargaming space. Another comment pointed out that the years of gameplay and fun from the books makes the price point worth it, and while I agree, it sets a large barrier of entry for newer, younger players who don’t have the money to spend. I’m hoping 2024’s D&D has a simplified starter set at a much lower price point like the original. Thanks for chatting :)

I can kinda see where you’re coming from but I disagree. Having your ability scores comes from your background make much more sense. Where does our education, skills, interests come from? They come from the environment and education we had growing up. That’s our background. I also agree that this means there will be a certain subset of players who always pick the same thing to optimise a build. But roleplayers have always and will always just pick what they want for the character they imagine regardless of optimisation. It’s also a bit early to completely judge if this is a good change or not as the full info from the book is not currently available except to a few select people. I personally have been very pleased with all the changes I’ve seen and heard about so far and I’m looking forward to implementing these new rules

While i 100% agree that ability scores coming from backgrounds does make a logical sense, I do partially feel the same way about certain races. If the game had a single race to choose from, I would understand completely, but If I had a level 1 gnome fighter and a half-orc fighter built the same way, I would expect the half-orc on average to win a bit more in a grappling match simply due to the size difference. If the Gnome spent his years adventuring as a fighter and a half-orc decided to study magic, however, the gnome would 100% lay him out in a physical fight. In my opinion, there should be less emphasis on where you came from, and more emphasis on what you’re becoming as you adventure. I also agree with you that this is a lot to judge the book over with how little of it is released. Frankly, this was just a little nitpick that had quite a bit of discussion around it, and I wanted to try a “spicier” take in video format. I’m not a huge fan. Going forwards I think i’ll stick more towards talking about player behavior at the table, world building, and homebrews. Thanks for chatting :)

What do you not agree with? Not approaching this conversation out of maliciousness, but genuine curiosity to experience different viewpoints. I enjoyed old 2014 D&D’s character creation because it made sense to me. A dragon-born or a goliath would probably be stronger than a gnome if they both started at the same point (level 1), but just because that’s the case doesn’t mean it’s bad. The gnome would adventure, fight battles, and grow in power, and soon he would be capable of feats of impossible strength. Your background serves its purpose by giving you unique knowledge in certain subjects to help you interact with the world, and it CAN be impactful in your game as long as you and your dungeon master make efforts to incorporate your backstory into the game. 2020 Tasha’s simply removed the first aspect of this. The game still functions the exact same, but now you get some ability scores placed where you want them. This lets you play a wider variety of race/classes without fear of making an obsolete choice. I personally felt it removed some of that hero fantasy I enjoyed, but in a very very minor sense. 2024’s Players Handbook brought back the initial limiters that were present a decade ago, just placed them in a different spot. People who enjoyed Tashas are now limited once more by what they can play. The guide background doesn’t give bonuses to strength, so no paladin or melee fighter is gonna pick that, and the feats introduced also vary in power, some of which being much stronger than others. The crafter feat compared to features like Lucky and Savage Attacker is laughable. These new options are rigid and limiting on a much harsher scale. It’s not like D&D 2014, where I might miss out on +2 to my main ability score for being a half-orc rogue instead of an elf. Now I might miss out on the ability to roll all my melee damage dice twice if i don’t pick a background that has synergy with my character. This just results in players gravitating towards specific backgrounds instead of certain races. I was fine with a loss of a few ability score points in the name of roleplay, but losing something as strong as feats is tough. It’s the reason why variant human was such a prominent race. Unless it’s something else in the video you disagree with. If that’s the case, please let me know!

@@KrazyKDice 2024 isn't bringing back those initial limiters though and this entire conservation is based on the seemingly intentional ignoring of the fact that custom backgrounds exist as an advanced option for players to use. The preset backgrounds are starting points for less confident players that you are encouraged to use as a template to either adapt or create off them as a guide for what your own should look like. 2024's player's handbook is a step in the right direction for the Tasha's change as far as I'm concerned. Instead of just swapping them instantly, This is now allowing player's to take whatever ability scores they need to perform well and asking them to roleplay by either picking a premade background that explains why their Orc is a sequestered book smart acolyte or create their own and pair it with a description and feat that creates the mental imagery of their backstory that led them to being an adventurer with those stats.

@@Exaltable While it's true that 2014's D&D has always given players the option to use custom backgrounds (and It was expected you did so), this isn't exactly the case for 2024's D&D. When discussing the 16 new backgrounds and feats in the 2024 Player's Handbook in their new video, it's explicitly stated that if a player wants to go beyond the backgrounds listed in this book, the new Dungeon Master's Guide provides guidance on how to do so "under DM supervision". Otherwise, the 16 backgrounds are what you get. If you want to make a custom background, you not only need the Dungeon Master's Guide, but also the Dungeon Master's permission, unlike 2014's D&D where it's written in the Player's Handbook and you were free to do so without approval. These rules were stated differently in the UA Playtest, which mentioned you can build a background from scratch, use a preset, or adjust aspects of a preset, and I agree with you 100% that this is the right step to take when it comes to making backgrounds. This information is from unearthed arcana playtest content and it contradicts what's being said in an official video released by Dungeons & Dragons themselves though, so I'm going to focus on what's been released from an official source. Some Dungeons Masters won't have the DMG, or do and choose to play exclusively with the Player's Handbook (Like I normally do), and in cases like that, it's a downgrade in character creation flexibility. The video could also be wrong, and the book says something entirely different about custom backgrounds. This seems like a common enough occurrence, and it's already happened before. It was mentioned in their weapon mastery video that the dagger's weapon mastery "nick" would let you benefit from the light property of the dagger to make an extra attack without spending a bonus action, which meant you can make up to three dagger attacks in a turn. This is wrong, contradicting the DnD Beyond thread on the topic which says the following. "Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean you can make a third attack as a Bonus Action, as the Light property specifies you only get one extra attack." Regardless, the same rules that have always been in place for the last 10 years are still the same. If there's something you as the Dungeon Master don't like, you're able to change it. I know custom backgrounds will certainly be allowed at my table. But for the sake of the players, I hope this important ruling is clarified some more, and not put in the hands of the Dungeon Master to potentially veto.
