They're still so freakish about IP I'm not at all surprised this took this long. Kingdom Hearts was... it's own thing. I often wonder what kind of dark arts style contract Squeenix signed to make the whole thing happen. (Especially with how twitchy Disney gets with portrayal of their characters.) I dunno. This feels like something people could mod/ make Disney OCs for and all of a sudden the Cease and Desist orders are flying left and right. Call me cynical, but if, when Hasbro can buy D&D not understanding it was an Imagination Game, Disney is just as short-sighted. There are so, so many Adult Disney Fans that have had wet dreams about anything like this. And those people scare me. And they scare Disney's lawyers too.

Ravensburger has also made Disney's Villainous which is also fantastic

I like Villainous also. Especially since the game also uses a lot of the more obscure villains. Like the freaking Horned King from Black Cauldron. Getting Disney to acknowledge that one is like pulling teeth most of the time.

Between this and Lorcana, I’m feeling like Disney is trying to cut into the Hasbro tailspin. I want to wish them well, but when it’s a battle between two megacorps, there’s no Beauty and Beast situation here (though if you think I’m wrong, please let me and my friends know; be our guest). There’s really no up-side to this in the long run-though at this point I should be glad the hobby isn’t completely frozen and just let it go. Whichever comes out as the emperor in this fight will likely set the new groove going forward, so it makes sense to keep an eye on whatever crawls out of the black cauldron that is 2024 at this point. Anyway, if anything I said here seems too tangled, let me know. I appreciate feedback, and you’d be my big hero. Six minutes, it took me to write this comment.

There’s homebrew already in the works, even without people seeing the rules yet.

Looking over at my copies of Middara, Oathsworn, Chronicles of Drunagor, Massive Darkness 2, Gloomhaven and Frosthaven and chuckling as Nonat calls Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan and Betrayal big box games. 🙃

When I hear DnD and Disney I can't help but think "Oh one soulless evil corporation emulates another soulless evil corporation, a match made in corporate hell."

I’m looking at who they have as their lead designer, and I’m worried a little bit. They’ve designed some party and puzzle games, but no RPG’s. I would honestly like to see who else is working on the project before passing judgment, but I am hoping I am not looking at a child’s version of All My Children. Those who know will know what I mean.

Dude, Ravensburger was the first publisher of the TDE TTRPG. The experience is there. Edit: TDE is Das Schwarze Auge in German and has quite a market share here in Germany.

@@nilshopf4881 Ravensburger is a very wide game development company, that covers a wide amount of subjects, and even established trpg companies create failures. My question is more "Who is on this team?" because designers have traits that the keep using in games, and I want to know if I am going to like the game. I do worry when their lead designer they credit doesn't have any writing credits for TRPG designs. That's like, say, trusting your 4x board game design to Monte Cook (I should use a less well known writer, but everyone knows Mr. Cook). Sure, he probably could do it, but he's got no track record there. You'd want to know who else is working on the project. Particularly when you got a big brand license attached to it.

Sorry to worry you 😅 I’ve been designing all sorts of games for many years, my published ones are a small fraction of all of the games I’ve made. And I believe my experience designing party games translates well to designing cooperative games since they rely heavily on player interaction. I also worked closely with Shanon Lyon at Ravensburger who is a super talented developer and brought the best out in my design. Hopefully you will get a chance to play it and then decide what you think about it after experiencing it. I will be demoing it at Gen Con as well.

Remember, there was a time when the idea of Disney making “Star Wars” was thought to be a good idea…

I would be actually excited for a disney ttrpg. But the succes of that would depend for me on the theming. I feel like disney has been very safe in the 2010 era. I can envision a rpg game that would play with disney worlds and characters. Something like kingdom hearts, twisted wonderland, epic mickeu or the art on lorcana cards. Something that lets you play as original character, interacting with disney characters and worlds perhaps reimagined in some kinda universal fantasy setting. Imagine playing as a classical prince sword class, an ink bending mage, a princess summoning little critters. Fighting classic villains like maleficent. It's a really good idea but it does require some creativity and for disney to not be so protective of the license as to not let mickey be a bard or let your original characters get in a fight with hades. They used to go for that stuff more in the 2000s. Lorcana does have me hopefup tho. Maybe with this game they will see there is a market for a more proper rpg heavy (not as deep as pathfinder or anything but more than just a one page ruleset) disney game.

I mean, why Belle instead or... idk.... MULAN?!

As someone who has attempted, and failed, to utilize Disney properties multiple times as a source of lore, the designers have my sympathy. Disney, the conglomerate it is, controls a variety of different franchises, locales and characters with vastly differing themes and that is just their original IPs. For an example, how do you incorporate Toy Story, Tron, and the Disney Princesses into a single campaign setting? I disparage the Kingdom Hearts series but I will acknowledge that the concept that the various properties are similar to planets was the best way to get as many as possible into one game.

My campaign based on Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears has lasted 3 years now (with some holiday breaks)! It was a rough start though.

I'll have to see more to know for sure but since you can only play as 4 very specific characters that have established personalities I wouldn't call this an RPG. It'd be more like a acting class then an RPG to roleplay in this game.

Kinda upset, I thought the idea of a Disney dnd game would be crazy fun cause you can create characters from Disney and Pixar's movies, not just the four characters listed. Like a party of four, a knight from Cinderella's guard, a robot from WALL-E, a mermaid from the little mermaid, and and resident from Zootipia choosen to save the world for example. I guess I'll wait and see what comes of this game.

If it's a Disney RPG, I suppose we can expect the majority of magic users to be villains and die horribly!

If I don't support WoTC, I certainly am not supporting Disney.

So, found this. Seems to be the same thing as this; but what struck me was the "inspired by JRPG" I don't think they mean the video games. Does anyone know anything about Japanese TTRPG's? I have to wonder what they're like and if what we're seeing is an importing of an idea.

Ye, that's a pass for me. We had enough stress with WoTC's OGL fiasco, and WoTC isn't even half the devil Disney is. It could be good, and I wouldn't blame anyone who wants to just play it for fun, but personally I'm not trusting Disney with a ten foot poll, so I'm not even going to get my hopes up about it fow whenever Disney inevitably starts making legal demands and imposing on anyone playing it... or really on the entire TTRPG community, cause no ammount of overreach is enough for the Mouse.

I am a little disappointed that they're using a name like Chronicles of Light: Darkness Falls and it has nothing to do with Kingdom Hearts. Obviously that game is a bit too niche to directly make into a ttrpg, but at the same time... that's pretty much what most people would want out of a Disney TTRPG. I feel confident saying that if you asked someone who didn't know about kingdom hearts what they would want or expect from a Disney TTRPG, they would describe hopping through disney worlds like Kingdom Hearts. Regardless, I hope the game is good because I always hope stuff is good. It's not a game for me, but it's gonna be a game for plenty of people. Having a nice, aimed at kids entryway into the hobby is only a good thing.

Chronicles of LIGHT. DARKNESS falls.... sounds very AI generated. dunno if you mention this.. but its the first thought that crossed my head.. and its engagement for you.

Bro, I am the most anti-AI motherfucker you will ever see, and even I think this is a massive stretch. Two words that are related to each other and you immediately think it's AI generated? I guess _all_ of Kingdom Hearts has been AI-generated since day 1 given how much that story talks about darkness and light. You're gonna turn this into a boy who called wolf situation where when we actually do need to call out genuine AI, people are gonna say "but what about all these times you called for a false positive?".

Disney has a successful track record with IPs, I am excited by this, also they have a modern and respectful take on diversity when it comes to inclusivity, something every other major TTRPG simply is failing miserably with.

I fail to see what you mean about "inclusivity failing miserably" in TTRPGs and Disney's "respectful take" on it. How are DnD and Pathfinder failing when it comes to diversity? Their art in their books are full of Humans and Friends of color, wide usage of cultural inspiration among Humans and Friends and DnD has even started to gut out their original lore for Drow since it was so anti-women when it was first written, or at least could have been seen that way thanks to "Evil Matriarchal society". How is Disney any better at it? Every single movie since they have changed focus from good storytelling to "diverse" storytelling has been a major flop to the point that Bob Igor (Disney CEO) has pretty much said they have to stop telling stories purely for diversity's sake if they want to continue to thrive as a company.

DND is an F-, sorry not sorry, the Drow society based on spiders, somehow that being an excuse for it's evil matriarchal society is beyond disgusting, even if female spiders are larger and eat the males, never mind the color of their skin and them being so-called "evil". And this idea that a token one or two bipoc somehow is okay? Uh? 16 of the 22 Pathfinder Icons are white or white-adjacent, two are green, one is a bird with only two being African American skin colored, barely more than the number of birds and equal to the green beings. If this is going to be by disney.... I just see it being as trash as the majority of things disney has done the past 3-ish years. There is a Grimm RPG based on the Tales actually there is 2. There is the D6 one and there is also a d20 ne that is more aimed at younger children. Both are by FFG (Fantasy Flight Games)

I think it's pretty disingenuous to describe all of Disneys recent movies the way you did. I haven't seen Wish yet but Elemental was excellent.

This comment likely won't be received well and might even be hidden, but I'm gonna be honest here: hearing the design team is an 'all-female team' and hearing you talk about 'female empowerment' doesn't give me good vibes and should be a minor warning sign/red flag to most people who have experienced products made in the last 5 years. Now I'm not SUPER worried since this product seems very niche and is connected to Disney princesses and I think that is the goal it's taking and will likely be aimed for children rather than being a TTRPG of true or real substance, but all the same we've had a real push for products to be made by certain groups of people with certain ideals pushed as being more important than they are for a product and lo and behold! The product is garbage out the gate. High Guardian Spice ALONE represents this well enough, but you can easily find many others without having to look very hard. But since this probably isn't that big of a true stride into DnD and is just a kids game, the investment is low so the loss isn't that great regardless, but one can hope that Disney will take the chance to actually make something cool like an Epic Mickey/Toontown DnD system.

Can someone say that the design team is SEXIST much? Yeah it's an uncomfortable discussion, but valid none the less. Whats the message here; that this is a "girls" game? Or only girls can be the heroes because "reasons" and that males that play this are just going to have to suffer? Your talking about a TTRPG that is barely a TTRPG to begin with, built around pre-generated characters, having a pair of male character and a pair of female characters wouldn't have been hard at all, but that wasn't what happened here. Why?

All female design team means this will be terrible. It's like getting an all-Asian team to write rap songs. When only a few of a demographic indulge in and create for the hobby, the pool of talent will be smaller. Its basic math to know they skipped over more qualified people to get this done.
