This is the second of your videos I’ve watched, and I’ve gotta say you seem to have a unique set of mannerisms you use to communicate. You’re incredibly animated with your gestures and facial expressions. It comes off in a sort of exciting way. Your speech patterns are relatively easy to follow and seem to be varied enough to keep interest during the entire video. Your combined tones, variance in volume, and physical mannerisms make it seem like you communicate firmly, yet softly at the same time which is hard to describe. This isnt even including the solid content you put together for your videos. It seems easy to see how these skills may easily translate into running a great game. Keep up the good work.

Bobby Baker wow! Thank you so much for that! That was the most detailed... analytic... and accurate description of my body language that anyone has ever said. I really do appreciate that, a lot of times people can mix it up as this in genuine or fake, but I am genuinely excited about what I’m trying to share with people! I am a math teacher and coach by trade, so maybe it comes from the math classroom with trying to get high school kids to pay attention to math lol This made my night, thank you!

For the "Roll Trios" thing, I personally run it more like a skill challenge - make one check per day, and you have to get X successes before Y failures (typically 5 and 3, but can change depending on the length of the task). DC 15 is one success (and standard one days' progress), DC 20 is two successes (you worked extra hard), DC 25 is three successes (you found some crazy inspiration, or luck happened upon you). If you roll under 15, that days' work is wasted for some reason (maybe you make a mistake and have to backtrack, or you find out the parts you were using don't fit, etc.). Once you fail a certain number of times, you have to start all over and buy new parts. This way they can make progress through whatever downtime they have, and they don't have to do it all at once. If you only have one day of downtime, you can spend that day working and keep it for later. If you're on the road, you can spend an hour each night working on your project.

OMG THE BARBARIAN ARMOR I DID THAT CRAP..... So what happened was I was playing an Orc Barbarian in Pathfinder, where we started every combat with Rage, and then the casters casting Enlarge and Bull Strength on my so I was an unstoppable tank. Now we bought a baby backpack for me to wear so when I did all this our Cleric, a little female Trident I am not sure what the race was but she did a fish person, would climb in and be protected by me and she would spam healing spells into me, our flank was always guarded by the Fighter and Monk to keep her alive

I know this is older but I tend to do downtime between sessions and do 1 on 1 sessions that I design around the characters and if necessary do a little info dump. I have a barbarian who wants to be a chef so she I designed a cooking contest by a guild that is a front for a secret society that monitors for extra-planar incursions. Another is a nature cleric who is going to have a conversation with her deity without necessarily knowing it is them. Another is an artificer using his resources at his guild to research strange objects they found. This allows them all to have something to tell each other after and actually give them different information to put those puzzle pieces together.

Sorry in advance for the long post. But I was excited to see that one again ideas that you inspired brought me to thoughts and results adjacent to a future video. I know this is why you do this so I thought I would take the time to share. Working on your previous videos of skill challenge and downtime activities I spent most of last week working on something for both my campaigns set in my home brews world. Essentially, the party came together as hired security for a trade caravan sent out to find a lost trade mission and retrieve the goods and personnel. In the background there are several factions that do this type of work, independents, a popular and well known group from the area, and those hired by a Noble making moves to gain a foothold in this new territory. for the upcoming Down Time the party has the opportunity to hire on with one of the aforementioned groups. I don't want to role play at the table every single trade job, but I want to give a sense of accomplishment. so I have set up a chart with the number of jobs they could do (die roll) adjusted by skill challenge (# of successes - failures added to the die roll. I also broke the chart down by season to reflect the change in conditions that can and will occur. The chart operates like a Downtime random encounter chart listing the types of situations,, and rewards for given missions. (% chances for weather events, beast attacks, beast attacks, bandit attacks, supernatural monster attacks, and campaign specific events. I even listed when these should be broken out of down time activities and be Role-played at the table as individual encounters.

A good DM is a master of adventure story telling. A great DM is a master of downtime game play. Adding a sense of comfort and slice of life and relative security to the characters and their campaign make the horror, danger and action and adventure all the more exhilarating when it happens. I'm really focusing on learning and writing sandbox downtime activities for the players. Ones where the greatest danger would be a bar fight or getting pickpocketed. One where they can make friends, get a regulation, get into artesian crafts, gamboling, farming, blacksmithing, masonry, civil magic, or whatever. I'd love to find TTRPG's with rule sets I could borrow from to make this happen in DND. Like medieval sim city type game on table top. Anyone have a direction they could point me in?

@@TheDungeonCoach yeah, it was a real bummer the connection wasn't great on that episode, but you held my intrigue to come check you out. Already using skill challenges in my Mad Mage game. I've been using it to see how easy and safe my PCs can travel between Waterdeep and the level they are currently on. Speeds up the descent and escape and makes the PCs feel like they have more control rather than complete randomness of random encounter rolls I often used in the past.

red250reiven hey thank you, I appreciate that! I have two videos on a DM Guide that I would say have EVERYTHING in two videos jam packed the best I could! They are older though but the quality is the same And I have a video on 7 ways to start a campaign Those would be my tips and comment there if you have questions further’ 👍🏼👍🏼

@@TheDungeonCoach Would like to give a big thanks and an update At first I was gonna go with the typical meet in a tavern setting, but after watching your recommendations- I instead started them off with them falling asleep on a travelling carriage down a forest path that ended up with them getting acquainted with their coachman, rescuing her from a bandit attack that turned out to be cultists, and ending it with a mini boss fight before arriving to their destination where the coachman lives. They really enjoyed it, so thanks again for the advice/ideas and videos :D

Guy really likes swinging his index fingers around. He has good advice, but his elocution and overall intonation and voicing is repetitive and really makes listening to what he has to say tedious and at times painful. It's like watching a really really bad infomercial.

tmcdon I hear your feedback man and can definitely take away from it to try and shake out of repetitive body motions. I’ve caught myself leaning forward at the end of sentences a lot and fixed that. Duly noted 👌🏼
