the DMG also has an alternate mechanic for handling big armies of enemies. Page 250, mob combat. Basically it eliminates rolling for the enemies. The players can hit any monster individually, but a group essentially is assumed that a certain number of attacks will be guaranteed to hit. You can use average damage to speed things up too. Their to-hit is based on their attack bonus and your players' AC, basically what they need to roll on a d20. For instance, if they need to roll at least a 13, a mob of 3 units is guaranteed to get one hit off on the player. So if you have a mob of 6 units, they successfully and automatically hit with 2 attacks. It makes it so you don't have to actually roll for your mobs, and they can break off into individuals on the fly. This also means they don't ever crit since you don't roll damage. Zee Bashew did a video talking about it and it's hard to explain, but having run it, it handles big groups of enemies SUPER well. Numerically it's about equivalent to averages when rolling individually. If you think about it, it's kinda like how swarms in previous editions had automatic damage as well.

I don't like the book rules for one reason: it's assuming that the entire mob is hitting one character

  • @Zedrinbot

    @Zedrinbot

    3 жыл бұрын

@@baddiemcbadbad9231 That won't be too much an issue if there's enough mobs. If it IS though you can break it apart and have a number of volleys made against each player, by RNG. Then back calculate how many of those volleys hit. It'll lead to a bit more wasted attacks from the mobs, but considering it's mass combat, that's not something you're hurting for as a DM.

In your orc scenario you could have one of the orcs from the other group run away in fear or charge the barbarian ending in its death. This could lead to players wasting their reaction to attack it or chase down what is already to the DM as a dead orc, but that is the choice of the player and just adds to combat.

Going to try and implementation this swarm mechanic in my next one-shot. Going to have a rat summoner who can summon rats as a bonus action. Mechanically it will heal the swarm by adding to its masses. The players will have to choose to attack the rat summoner or deal with the swarm itself.

About the explanation of how the damage "carried over" to the orcs on the other side: maybe one of the orcs was so terrified of the barbarian killing two of his allies in a single hit that he just... ran way. That way, for mechanical purposes the player "dealt" with 3 enemies with his powerful blow, but it still makes sense in-game. And if someone else really wants to spend time killing the fleeing orc, just treat him as a minion.

Your "Swarm of Orcs" is nearly the same as I run my campaign. I've done several "Swarms of Goblins", with one pool, etc. "How many are left?" "Lots". The barbarian was one to cut swaths through them, have multiple clinging/climbing on him. Multiple kills in one attack. Keeps things moving well. Split the swarm? No sweat. The barbarian one time grabbed a head of a dead one and chucked it at the other group. Very cinematic. Works very well. Thrilled to see others doing something similar!

I love the idea of combining minions and swarms! I feel like it could even be one step easier to just have them be minions that die in 1hp, but have an overkill mechanic where every X damage kills an additional minion, so any damage always kills 1 and that cuts down on the math and hp tracking.

The first Skill Challenge video is iconic and has resulted in some amazing sessions from sharing it with different DMs! We had a massive battle against an army of Frost Giants at the gates of Waterdeep, where me and another player flew off to destroy the enemy fleet, while the rest of the party was on the front lines. The scale and simplicity thanks to the Skill Challenge worked SO well and made for an unforgettably EPIC couple sessions!

Your fixed cantrips video was the 1st I actually implemented in my game, but flanking rules probably helped me the most. My high-level players have huge ac and it was hard to challenge them. But with one of your variants and a couple of modifications, we are now heading into a war and I can rest assured that if a unit of low-level soldiers surrounds one of them they will actually pose at least a small threat to the demigod :D.

In your "Swarm of Orcs" example, you ran into a very interesting problem. dealing enough damage to kill several orcs (with a melee attack) but not having all of those orcs in range. To me the solution is simple--I've been looking for a way to determine when enemies surrender, flee, and so forth, and this seems like a great way to explain that exact event: "you cut the orc down, hacking deep with your blade. As you pull your weapon free a spray of blood stains the near wall, and your eyes meet with *these two* across the room. Their faces go slack as you hear their weapons clatter to the floor." Turning to the characters nearest to the surrendering orcs, "They're at your mercy, do you wish to let them surrender? I also looked through your old videos, my favorite is apparently "How to fix the ranger".

  • @dungeonstaverns6707

Great video. This is how I run my mass battles almost exactly. The only difference is I decrement differently depending on a single units strength(cr) in the swarm so a -1 -2 or -3 to hit so if 1 creature is +10 to hit then 2 in a stack become +12 3 become +14 etc but I do cap it. The system breaks down if there is more than 1 spell flinger but it doesn't have to. I treat it as multiple spellcasters casting the same spell and increment the dice up a rank according to how many casters there are. So if 3 people are casting fireball it goes from 8D6 to 8D12. Yes if 3 casters individually rolled 8D6 per caster it adds up to a lot more damage but players won't see it that way because they are gonna lose a larger chunk of hp than just if 1 fireball was cast at them and this will make lower CR monsters a threat again. Love your videos I've watched them all binge-style over a 3 day period. You've replied to my main account solsunforge vlogs a few times but this is my new d&d account. I always have shared your videos and my favorite one is probably the skill challenge video. Just started my channel so there isn't much there yet but I feel you should have more subscribers so in a future video you will be promoted. Oh if I win then please give it to someone else. Whew, lot to say alright have a nice day.

The minions were a great mechanic from 4th Edition, seems 10 ogres approaching make the group panic until they realized they dropped in one hit. Swarms were also more deadly since they had a rule where weapons dealt half damage to a swarm, but spells or area of effect attacks did full damage, this show how trying stab at swarm of rats was very effective compared to a wave of fire. 4th Ed had great combat rules! Keep digging through 4th Edition to find all the great rules they had. I shared your Wild magic home brew, it is a part of the game only loved by some players but I love it. They need more Wild Magic classes, oh my how about a full wild magic party!

I was already using minion rules and swarms of low monsters (we call em hordes) but the rules for incremental progression and for scatering the minion around the battlefield are exactly what I needed to make it feel even better. Thanks. this is now my favorite video and I shared it with the other DMs at my table ! Congrats on the 100th video ! Also, I would use a regeneration on the swarm of minion when the fight is in the middle of a vast battle where other minions can join the fight or when reinforcement can join the swarm, maybe the PC will reduce the swarm's damage for a while before concentrating on a boss but has new minions move into the area the swarm gains back it's bonuses and has to be delt with again ... and has the fight goes on the regen drops ... at least if the PC side is winning... maybe the regen alows to ''overcharge'' the swarm has more and more enemy get in the area pushing bonus and damage over the initial level and then the PCs have no other choice but to retreat.... wow this could make lead to a follow up video in itself. Great food for toughts thanks !

In a homebrew zombie campaign I made for a modern apocalypse setting, I once made rule regarding zombies acting as a "swarm" or "horde". Basically every multiple of 3, I turned the zombies into a single entity with a new HP and actions/size. Basically a zombie was just a simple monster, but three zombies was a group. 3 groups was a swarm. 3 swarms was a horde, and so forth. Also, I made a rule that anytime a number of zombies equal to or greater then your HD, you had to make a save against fear. This applied for hordes and such. I know this is more so the opposite of your video, but it was my solution to solving combat being slow due to too many creatures

Lately, I've been adopting a strategy to play combats that are not necessarily relevant to the main story. Just to clarify, these are combats from random tables in cases where I want to show the players the dangers or overpopulation of some places where they travel through. So, they don't need a grid nor to many shenanigans because generally they are just too many weak and annoying creatures. The system I now use is the group check, inspired by your videos. So thee group has to think in creative ways to overcome the enemies. Generally the number of successes is the number of enemies to beat, but depending on the creature, it may be sooner (as the enemies flee after losing in numbers). But noooow I think it would be awesome to synchronize this concept of swarm of enemies to use in this theater of kind/combat group checks. Excellent video! Thanks!

Favorite video: How to end your campaign because I wish I saw it before I bombed my first ever as module-turned-home brew campaign. Such a useful video. My campaign ended with me giving up, almost on all tabletop games as a whole. I tried a Burly Brawl (wish I saw this too) to up the ante. It ended so bad and I ended up just trying to kill my players because I was so “over it” and wanted it to end. Your video gave me hope for my next campaign.

One of my favorite videos is the 20 Mundane Items video. I love the idea of creative problem solving and thinking outside the box. And having a way to slightly buff a mundane item is nice for those times when it adds more flavor to the encounter.

I’m not 100% on this because I haven’t purchased the book (yet), but I believe colville created a mechanic on npcs and enemies where he gives them no HP, but they can take “X” amount of hits before they die. Your concept for multiple hits to take down a minion rather than HP reminded me of that. Love it! And I like the overland travel videos, backstory driven features for characters as they level up video and the short/ long rest.

I really like the swarm mechanics. Minions I handle in a more improv way, which you did talk about, and never bothered explicitly giving them 1 or 2 hits of life - just do what feels right. Very cool ideas.

Best bad*as move I did was being a warlock and using a spell that (I think) explodes a 10ft radius on a goblin camp. I blasted it to their armory, weapons flew and gunpowder blew. Killing 10+ goblins there were shy over 20 gobs. 😆

I loved the skill challenges video(s). Skill challenges are something that seem too ambitious for me as a beginner DM but you break it down so well. As I wrote the above I realize that I probably loved the feat-buy system of character creation even more. For my players this has to be the ultimate in opening up new possibilities for them! Keep up the great work! Can't wait for the next 100 videos!

You pushed me to feel confident with homebrew and there are so many videos to choose from. My favourite was the skill challange series, but the one I have share specifically was the icewind dale homebrew rules for my GMs new campaign, we are now using some of those rules.

I'm currently designing a campaign loosely based on Warhammer: Vermintide and believe it or not came up with a near identical system to this, with the added bonus that when a player rolls a nat 20 on attack they get an extra attack instead of double damage (because they'll likely kill the minion anyway.) Combining this with the mob combat rules from the DMG will make the combat feel epic and unique as the crew swims like bladed fish through a sea of Ratmen to reach their objectives! Big thanks!

If I had to pick a single favourite video of your's is the revamped resting system, I shared that with my party and it created some of the best roleplay moments in our campaign and after watching that video my players have watched a bunch of your videos and the other DM in my group uses a lot of your homebrew rules including the rest system.

I shared your video about short rest/long rest/full rest with one of my groups and they loved the idea! Thanks for your content! I have used minions before, but I am gearing up for a mass combat (a siege of the city of Silverymoon) and I will integrate your "swarm" idea for the enemy warriors. I have one party with two players, so combat already goes pretty quick, but my group of 5 players definitely slows down using Rules as Written.

I've had to use minions and mega-minions since session one of the Four Winds game, in which my players kick insane ass. Since they're fighting scores of hobgoblins (and are now captured by a massive army of thousands, with enemies of all size classes), I'm thankful this video explained an easier way to do it. I had a unit system in mind, but you've allowed me to do it even with scattered groups.

Love the videos. I've used many of your videos as inspiration for the homebrew rules I have at my table. Ifi had to choose a single video, I'd go with the point buy character creation and feat system video. That video and corresponding pdf make up the backbone of my homebrew rules. Can't wait to see what you do next.

My favourite video of yours is definitely the Icewind Dale hombrew pdf (50 plus house rules). I really liked it because I utilised it a ton in my Icewind dale campaign. My personal campaign has a lot of homebrew and uses the Rime of the frostmaiden campaign as a base. The frostchecks, and other survival rules are really helpful as the base d&d rules on survival are quite scarse. I can’t believe this channel is almost at 20 k subs. I remember the race to 10 k before one year!
