    Gift of Alacrity gives you most of the Alert feat (+5 vs +4.5 ave.) for 8 hours per day, and you can also cast it with your spell slots to give it to other characters if you want. Sure you can still be surprised and it technically only lasts 1/3 the time as Alert without spending spell slots, but considering this is just 1/4 of the Fey Touched Feat, that’s still pretty good value.

    @Professor Thinker there's no RAW that defines what's a direct harm versus what's an indirect harm. That entirely up to interpretation. I gave examples of things that are clearly direct harms, then asked you to provide an example of an indirect harm. Because if you can't indirectly harm someone with the spell then RAW the spell would just say harmful and not directly harmful.

    Here's another interesting thought to throw into the mix: the Sentinel feat. Force the target to move away from you, but your allied fighter has Sentinel, hits, and keeps the enemy from fleeing in addition to any other opportunity attacks. Then on the enemy's turn, an ally's Command spell triggers forcing it to flee again, but runs into another ally with Sentinel and possibly Polearm Master to hit 10 feet away the moment it's in range. If combined correctly with allied teamwork in place, the enemy can not only lose its turn each round, but be hit for free just for trying to move!

    Great video. I have actually started playing using this tactic starting earlier this month, grouping with a Barbarian/Rogue and Bladesinger (using Shadow Blade). Good times. I am playing as an aberrant mind sorc. The benefit of aberrant mind is that psionic sorcery will allow you to more cheaply convert spell slots. Aberrant can use 1 sorcery point per spell level -- so 1 to cast Dissonant Whispers--so for example you can convert a 2nd level spell into to 2sp = 2 casts (vs other sorcs converting a 2nd level into 2 sp and and 2 sp into 1 1st level spell slot). So I can have DS casts for days. And this scales, because the damage here is from your melees who will do more damage as they level.

    I think it is worth notting that this damage comes at a price, notably your allies reactions. - If your DM roleplays the monsters, one thing that prevents them from charging the caster is, no one wants to be the first to take opportunity attacks, even if it is better for the enemy group as a whole. But now that the reactions are spend, it makes sense for the monsters to charge you. - Your allies might have defenses or even offensive things to use their reaction on. Like Uncanny dodge for the rogue, or shield for an eldritch knight fighter, or riposte for a battlemaster fighter. A few melee builds even have counterspell. So before you cast these spells, ask yourself, will my ally need their reaction for something more important. Very good and strong spells for the reasons mentioned in the video, just wanted to give some pointers on when not to use them.

You follow this command up with your free object interaction and throw them a bunch of juggling balls. They would then proceed to drop anything they were holding in their hands and pick up the balls, starting to juggle. But the best thing is that juggling requires an INTENSE amount of concentration! Anyone who has ever tried to juggle more than one ball knows you need to freaking CONCENTRATE. What else requires concentration? Spells.

    In the mountains or anywhere with ledges and drops, command and silent image can be fun. Create an image of some steps leading over a ledge. Command the creature to "go". It's a bit of a challenge with one word though, and might not be clear. I guess you could make illusory walls and a ladder instead? Hrm...

    You left out the BEST PART of dissonant whispers - read that again: "One creature of your choice within range can hear..." This is amazing! You don't need line-of-sight! You don't even need to see them! My rogue-bard cast this in a fog cloud and devastated an enemy. I was dangling from a broken ladder on Firefinger in Tomb of Annihilation, and cast it on Ptera-folk who were in a cave above killing my friends. I didn't see them, but I knew they were there. I could hear them. They could hear me. When they failed their save it was epic damage. Everyone got opportunity attacks! It changed the battle! I couldn't shoot them or stab them, but I could make an annoying noise!! I could help my friends, even though I was near death hanging from a thread 100' off the ground. No somatic component either-hands-free! Great! This is one of very few low level spell that works against invisible targets, targets in a fog, in darkness, around a corner, whatever. That is so incredibly useful to be able to attack something you cannot see. When you can't stab it, or shoot it, use this spell. Unbelievable at first level spell.

    lvl 7 Paladin oath of vengeance with tunnel fighter (Unearthed arcana), polearm master and relentles avenger. Free movement on an enemy turn when they provoke an OA. just move 5 feet to catch up to them. They continue to run away provoking another OA. Move 5 feet. Repeat until the enemy dies or is out of movement. Under DM discretion whether you can use unearthed arcana though.

    I've never liked dissonant whispers for this reason. My group had a Rogue and Paladin so ever opportunity attack was insane damage already and when they found the combo I was cool at first, but after a short time I realized how bad it could get and how it could ruin encounters so I changed it to consider provoking attack of opportunity "obviously dangerous ground" if the enemy had seen the power of the attacks.

  • @swb5816
    @swb58162 жыл бұрын

    I know I'm late to the party but I wanted to point out that Command requires that you can see the target "a creature you can see within range", while Dissonant Whispers is one of the few spells that does not require you to see the target "one creature of your choice within range". This lets you, for example, cast Dissonant Whispers while inside a Pyrotechnics smoke cloud that you can't see through. Or inside Darkness while your three Tiny Servants who have Blindsight all slap the guy with an opportunity attack with advantage.

  • @vinspad3

    I agree on how Dissonant Whispers works, wrt Command: a GM may consider a Disengage to be the best movement for the enemy rather than a dash. If so, yes, it's good to lock down an enemy, but it only lasts 1 round. Because I can't be sure of a GMs interpretation of Dash/Disengage, I'm taking a few buff/debuff/control spells at 1st over Command. At 3rd level, a bard can only have about 6 known spells. You have 2nd level spells so is Command a top 4 or 5 bard spell on the list? You're going to take Dis. Whispers. So now is it top 3? Hideous Laughter incapacitates and gives prone for multiple rounds. Command is guaranteed 1 only. Even if you get 1 round of Tasha's it's even because of the advantage. Sure, action economy wins because they get their hits on 'this round of combat with Command, but with Tasha's that creature is a) getting hit with higher DPR and b) potentially down longer increasing DPR and lowering threat to allies. Bane is probably better as is Faerie Fire. You likely take 2 of those 3 since they all are concentration - Tasha's for single target + Bane/Faerie for multi targets. That's 3 spells right there if we include Diss Whispers. If Bane is better, Color Spray may be better, too. 15ft cone of blinding? Now my allies hit with advantage (yay sneak attacks!) and enemies have disadvantage. And it hits multiple creatures when command only hits one?Pick that up. Now you're at 4. Sleep at low levels is easily better. You're likely knocking out 1-2 opponents for 1 minute each cast until level 3 with a lot of debuffs. 5 Tack on a Healing Word for good measure. 6 1st level spells before I think about Command. And thats not even looking at utility ones like Silent Image or Disguise Self. So *maybe* at higher levels when Sleep isn't useful you swap it out, but at that point I like to swap in higher spells when I level OR Feather Fall because most of us have flying in the midgame and it's fun to be the one who saves their friends from the wrong end of a 20d6 roll.

  • @vinspad3

    @vinspad3

    2 жыл бұрын

    The point I was making is as a Bard, are you going to take Command? And my answer is no. We agree Faerie Fire is great. I disagree that Command is better than Hideous Laughter, but it comes down to what you're trying to do. Are you trying to lockdown 1 creature for multiple rounds on a lockdown or are you trying to do something against a bunch of creatures for 1 round (which takes upcasting). The only reason I would have Command over HL or the others is because it *isn't* a concentration spell. But my point was that you have a limited number of spells as a Bard, and you probably already took Faerie Fire. If I look at non-con spells and I can only take 4, I'm probably taking: Faerie Fire (concentration) Healing Word - Keep the main healer up in a pinch Feather Fall - extremely helpful at Tier 2 when everyone is flying Dissonant Whispers - what the video is about Sleep Around 5th level, I'm swapping Sleep out for higher level spells - Bard has really good 2nd and 3rd level options, so having utility here is better than simply upcasting Command imo. And that's with no ritual spells, no doubling up concentration, no fun RP spells like Illusory Script or Distort Value. Command just never comes into play, and to be honest, neither does Hideous Laughter. Maybe a scroll or if I go fey touched I get Command (but a Bard with Fey Touched probably should go bless?).

    Actually had a DM that weirdly nerfed DW by making it not use up the creature's reaction. It still made you move if you failed the save, doing so just didn't use your reaction for the turn. This meant that, even if the creature had already used its reaction, it would still be forced to move away. However, that had the side-effect of not only making it so the spell no longer eats the creatures reaction for the turn, but also meant it no longer triggered an AoO. We were all okay with this because none of us were using the spell; The DM was, because of a reoccurring NPC who used it as a legendary action. He didn't want us to waste our reaction at the tail-end of our turn, so he just changed how the spell worked. Needless to say, if your DM rules it this way, the spell is not nearly as good.

In addition you could learn words in down time activities.
