යාපනය පෘතුගීසීන්ට,ලංදේසීන්,සහ ඉන්ගිරිසින් යන ජාතීන් ආක්‍රමණයට පහසුවෙන්ම ලක් වූ නගරයකි.පළමුවෙන්ම ආරක්‍ෂිත බලකොටුවක් ඉදිකරන ලද්දේ කි.ව1505 දී මෙරට පැමිණි පෘතුගීසීන් විසිනි.පෘතුගීසීන් චතුරස්‍රාකාර බලකොටුවක් ඉදිකර කි.ව 1619 දක්වා යාපනය බලය තහවුරු කරගෙන හින්දු ආගම මුලුමනින්ම විනාශ කර කිරිස්තියානි ආගම පතුරුවමින් තම පාලනය කරගෙන ගියා.පසුව ලංදේසි පැමිණ යාපනය පාලනය සියතට ගෙන පෘතුගීසීන් විසින් ඉදිකල යාපනය කොටුව වෙනස් කොට බැස්ටියන් පහකින් යුත් බලකොටුව ඉදිකරන ලදී.මුලින්ම ඉදිකරන බලකොටුව දියඅගල හා පිටපාකාරය ඇතුළත් නොවූ අතර එය කි.ව.1792 වර්ෂයේ මුලුමනින්ම වැඩ අවසන් කල අතර කි.ව 1795 සැප්තැම්බර් 28 වන දින බිරිතානය විසින් යාපනය බලය අල්ලාගන්නා ලදී.එ අනුව යාපනය බලකොටුව දක්නට ලැබෙන්නේ ලංදේසි බලකොටුව හා එ ආශ්‍රිත පුරාවිද්‍යාත්මක ස්මාරක සමූහයක් වෙ.අක්කර 56 පුරා විහිදී ඇත. ඉංග්‍රීසීන් මෙය පරිපාලන මද්‍යස්ථානක් ලෙස පමණක් භාවිත කර ඇත. මෙහි බැමි හුණුගල් හා කොරල් ගල් යොදාගෙන ඉදිකර ඇත.
