How would you rank Cyrus the Great compared with Darius the Great and Xerxes the Great? And let's also include Alexander the Great as well. :) Who was the greatest and why?

I personally would rank them (from worst to best) as: 5. Xerxes the great 4. Artaxerxes the great 3. Darius the great (hard choise between this and Alexander) 2. Alexander the great 1. Cyrus the great

@@Darkdaej Alexander is overrated. From what I understand he was incredibly reckless and politically inept and basically got lucky in collapsing the Persian Empire. He would have died sooner or later either from his recklessness on the field of battle or at the hands of his increasing number of enemies.

Xenophon was Athenian and a disciple of Socrates (like Plato). He followed Cyrus' expedition as an observer (journalist) and offered to lead the 10k greek soldiers back home when Cyrus died and their leaders were killed during negotiations with the enemy, since he was the educated one I suppose. At that juncture he writes that he said to himself: "what age do I expect to reach if I sit and wait here".

both of these sources are mostly fictional stories that were built by the intellectuals of an emerging society to inspire and call for improvement. the achaemenid empire left countless sources and evidence of material culture behind. It was a truly vast empire, and its mark can be found in almost every single city from what is now Afghanistan all the way to cyprus and greece. a good source for the examination of this material culture is Amélie Kuhrt's "A Corpus of Sources from the Achaemenid Period." There is a large section in the book dedicated to Cyrus' rise to prominence and his empire. It's detailed and takes into account every single excavation that is related to the empire.

Herodotus account of Cyrus’s death and upbringing always felt rather flimsy. It wouldn’t make much sense for a elderly Cyrus to be on the field of battle and it’s even more suspect given that we have very little evidence of Tomyris existing at all. Xenophons account of him peacefully dying at his capital is much more believable.

Thanks for the comment. Sounds like a great idea for a future video. In the meantime, check out my video on Zenobia. She was pretty amazing, and even gave the Romans a run for their money. I also have a video on Elissa, a Phoenician princess who founded the Carthaginian empire. While she mostly influenced African and European history, she was from the middle east and helped expand the influence of Phoenician culture in the ancient world.
