Early Median and Persian Kings - Deioces, Cyaxares, Astyages and Cyrus the Great

In honor of Nowruz, I wanted to do a quick video on the early history of the peoples known as the Medes and the Persians. We'll take a close look at the lives of a few of the kings of Media - Deioces, Cyaxares, Astyages - and how they relate to their most famous descendant, Cyrus II of Persia, also known as Cyrus the Great.

    Happy Nowruz Cy! Nice to hear you are Zoroastrian :) As a Muslim, I follow the opinion often seen in early Islam to consider Majus (Arabic version of Magi and name for Zoroastrians) as Ahlul-Kitab (People of the Book; Jews, Sabians and Christians, i.e. the predecessors of Islam) and I honor Mazdaism for its (often hidden) influence on my religion, especially in theology and Sufism. Not to mention the Persian influence on the political and administrative system and culture and science, especially during the Abbassids...

    Unfortunately no matter if they were considered people of book or not. Radhiduns, ummayads and abbasids greatly persecuted and banned zoroastrians, this is why 600 to 800 is considered dark age of persia. While after gaining independence from Arabs persia enters into golden age once again. Consequently creating golden age of Islam as well

    I've become a bit of an Iranophile ever since discovering you and Trevor Culley's "History of Persia". Indirectly, it got me studying the histories of the Ancient Near East all the way to modern day alongside cultural topics like the Maronites of Lebanon, Zoroastrian texts like the Avesta, Golden age of Islam, and how it all interacted with the world. I got to study the fascinating history of Bulgaria as an indirect result of me indirectly studying Byzantine history due to the Sassanian Empire. Also learned to cook Lubia Polo :) Thanks for all your videos and I hope there'll be many more to come!

    A quick fun fact, the Assyrians and Medes have had contact with one another for over 200 years and pre-collapse Assyria used Medes as soldiers and royal bodyguards. The concept of foreign bodygaurds is something that the Eastern Romans would recreate as the Varangian guard! The Medes provided Assyria with horses and horsemen for both training and to fight off the Scythians and other horse-back nomadic tribes.

  • @HistorywithCy

    @HistorywithCy

    Yes, very true. The annals of Shalmaneser III and Sargon II record clashes with the Medes for the acquisition of horses. They also used them as intermediaries between them and the people referred to as the Ummanmanda who are believed to have been Scythians (or a tribe of them). Interesting stuff... I'll try to cover this in future episodes. Thanks again for stopping by, I really appreciate it!

Relationship between the settled Iranians and the wild nomadic Iranians. Rigveda verses Avesta. The Split from the Indian, the religious reform away from ritual and into moral religion. Of course on Zoroaster. The blending with the Elamites and others, the cimmerian invasion. The blending of Persian and Hellenic during the Selecusian period. Persian Parthian food. Persian women of history. So much fun to be had. Enjoy the journey and please to feel free to let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

The region I live in is the one with more infected people... All the cities are blocked. Everyone around my city is either sick or dead. 500 more people died a few days ago... The hospitals are full. We are barely receaving any help from our governament. The situation in the factories is even worse. And what is worse, is that there is still people who doesn't care at all about the danger, and still goes around as if nothing was wrong, making the situation worse, obviously... Italy is basicaly the more endangered country in Europe... The medias gave us mixed and contraddictory messages and informations about the virus, making everyone confused. I fear for my father. Since he might remain trapped in another country because of the virus... If everything goes well, he should come back home today. But we honestly don't know... Despite the severity of our situation, the french decided to make fun of us... Meanwhile, they ignored their own cases, and now they are (pardon the language) fucked too... I do not hold a grudge against them. But me and my fellow italians feel like the rest of Europe is ignoring us... It's awfull... I fear even more for the greeks! Their country is DEAD, especialy economicaly, the other countries screwed them, they lost EVERYTHING. They have no way of surviving this... It's gonna be a grim sight for them... they barely have enough money to buy a meal for all we know. I do not know where you live. I live in the US where we are also going through the same thing, though not as bad as Italy...yet. They keep saying that we are on the same path as Europe. Just like you, we have those who are taking it seriously and those who are think this whole thing is not a big deal. We even see it every night on TV where the President says one thing, says it's not so bad and wants everyone to go back to work, and then the health experts, who are on stage with him, say something completely different 5 minutes later and have to constantly correct him. It is no doubt worse than we think over here because we don't even have enough testing kits. New York city is the worst hit, but other cities are quickly catching up. Stay strong my friend... Median (Kurdish) King Cyaxares the Great is a bigger and more important King than Cyrus. Because; Great Cyaxares founded the first regular army in history and destroyed many countries such as Assyria, Urartu, Scythian, Persian, Elam, Parthia, Massaget, Sogd and captured 3,100,000 km2 from Anatolia to Central Asia. It also triumphed against the Lydian state. The Great Cyrus destroyed the provinces of Babylon and Lydian with the army founded by the Great Cyaxares. He also made a trip to Central Asia and died in this war. Although the country of Cyaxares the Great was occupied, it established the first regular army in history and provided superiority to many states, particularly the Scythian and Assyrian states In short, Cyaxares the Great is the greater King than Cyrus the great. I suggest you research the Great Cyaxares as one of the biggest kings in history. However, it is neglected because there is less information than other kings.

    ‼️ In 2001, an international symposium was held in Padua to review all accessible sources in order to present an accurate as possible account of Median history. Due to the lack of sources, no consensus was reached. However, it was generally agreed that there was no proof of the existence of a Median "empire" and that it should therefore be considered a hypothesis.[

    Iranians are mostly even the descendants of the Elamites, who the Persians later conquered, but even that happened partially - lots of it happened with blending, the most important thing was that the language changed, likely gradually. But that language change might fool us to think that's only when the Persian culture started. Just it's not that simple: they used a lot what the Elamites had developed already, and genetically continued a lot the line of the Elamites: so the Persian culture has a lot of that Elamite in them. And the Elamites were a very ancient culture - one of the first we know of - living at the same time as the Sumerians, who are the oldest known civilization. After the Flood likely, because the Sumerians speak of it too, like the Bible does.

    Hello Cy! As customary, I truly enjoyed (and learned from) this historical production! Most importantly, while I was barely familiar, beforehand, with the name "Deioces," II was not aware of any detail of his life and progeny. Under these circumstances, I was delighted with (and surprised by) my immediate recognition of the name "DAHYUKA," due to his participation in one of my favorite historical novels (consisting of two books) titled: 1) The Assyrian; and 2) The Blood Star (both of which constituting the mini-series "Tiglath Ashur") by Nicholas Guild. According to such an adventurous/romantic "epic," its fabulous protagonist - Tiglath Ashur - would have been Sennacherib's son (by a Greek concubine), who would have grown up along with his dear brother "Esarhaddon," given that they would have grown up together in the palace's "House of Women," According to the novel's plot, Tiglath Ashur would have been his father's favorite and would have been designated as the king's legitimate successor on the Assyrian throne (if he could have had his way). Yet Esaharddon's powerful, malignant, and extremely clever mother Naqi'a-Zakutu would have manipulated/blackmailed the almighty god Ashur's "High Priest" to formally nominate her son - Esarhaddon - as the legitimate future king (representing the god's command). Anyhow, during several episodes, following a bloody battle, whereby Tiglath Ashur obliterated the Medes, he would have met and befriended "Dahyuka," subsequently meeting him several times. Since their friendship eventually became very close, these men would have become "brotherly" to one another). Anyway, thank you so much for this video, for it enabled me to reconcile Deioces with Dahyuka, thereby enhancing my historical knowledge and my appreciation of the said novel - which highlighted many times the mysterious Dahyuka" in the (second) volume (The Blood Star). Thanks for the clarification. Cheers!

    Kurds are the descent of the Median and Parthian Empire. Diyako was the father of every Kurd. Cyaxeres defeat the assyrian empire and bring back the Indo-European land to the Kurdish people. His tomb is near the city of Sulaimaniyah in Iraqi-Kurdistan. Medes take assyrian wife and mixed. That's the reason why Kurdish people have often more middle east or semetic dna than other iranian tribes.

    The death of Cyrus by a Scythian queen is a misappropriation from that of an earlier Median Shah. The source for the former, Heradotus himself, said of this account that it was only one of seven or eight that he had heard of, essentially disclosing to his audience upfront that he is choosing the stories that most suite the Hellenic palet, as he was something of a live ancient tabloid. The best source here is actually Xenophon, who lived extensively and intimately on campaign with Iranians well into a later period where the truth would've been more well known. Xenophon calculated measurements of ruins in Nineveh which seemed astronomical for the time, but was infact to scale. Xenophon was a reliable sources and considered by scholars as the best until being politically motivated to canonize Heradotus at some point in order to emphasize an east west clash of civilization narrative.

    The iranic people had northern Mesopotamia for a time period too short for migration. Most likely, iranic people migrated from the Iranian plateau into northern Mesopotamia during the Sassanid Persian empire. During this time, since the Persian capital Ctesiphon was in Mesopotamia, this led the Iranian people to migrate closer to the capital. Later on, after the Arabic conquest, sultan Ahmad Sanjar named the northern province Kurdistan. The iranic people of that region later ended up adopting the name. Some may be asking if the Kurds and the Iranians are the same people, yes they are. The Medes and the Persians both called themselves Airyana, the ancient word of Iran). I let you make what you want of it.

    Hi, thanks for stopping by and the comment. I personally believe that all of the Iranic peoples more or less have the same roots - in the Avesta the term Airyana Veja is used for the homeland of the Iranic/Arya peoples - basically it's the old form of Eramshahr. It's interesting, I read that the word "kurt" is first mentioned in a Sassanian document (which one I forget at the moment) which many believe may have been the origin for the word Kurd. I'm doing more research...let's see what comes up. Also, cool user name. Take care and stay safe!

    I realy like the persian empires. They were by far the more peacefull, open and efficient in the mediterranean world Unlike the Romans... Who had efficency and... That's pretty much it. They were great, yes. But they still crushed and basicaly abused the defeated cultures, sometimes utterly umiliating them or even committing things we would see as genocidal. Like the slaughter of the Druids or the systematic elimination of the inhabitants of Carthage. Something the Persians would never have done. I mean. Look at Khosrau the first, Anushirvan, the immortal soul of the Sassanid Persian Empire. He conquered a Bizantine city, destroyed every building, captured all of the inhabitants. And then, after they were brought to his land. He freed them, gave them all an honorary citizenship, rebuilt their city, rebuilt their churches, and gave them all a flip ton of money. Why? He wanted to show to Justinian who was the REAL powerhouse of the East. This is just. Wow. He could have slaughtered them, just to prove the same point. But instead of doing that, he decided to follow this elaborate scheme to prove that his empire was miles better than the bizantine empire. So much so, that even the bizantine citizens prefered to live under his rule rather than Justinian. Pure genius.

    Reducing the Roman's to mere efficiency is very reductionist. They made many inventions that have helped shape the modern world. Things like the first Newspaper (well News Slabs), Modern Plumbing and Sanitary Management, Using Arches to build strong structures (granted arches existed before but weren't used in this way), Air conditioning, surgical tools, developing concrete, long lasting roads, progenitors of Habeas Corpus, developing the Julian calendar, postal service etc. Also, it's not as if the Persians never committed genocide, such as when the Magi were killed in mass in the 522 BC. Also, it's not as if the Roman's were unique in slaughtering an entire city. This has happened countless times in human history. The Mongols did it frequently and under Genghis Khan he oversaw the killing of 11% of the worlds population at the time.

    @@KirilDimitrov86 Don't get me wrong. I like the romans. It's just that, when you compare the roman empire to other empires, they are not as amazing as they are usualy portrayed to be. I mean. Look at the Chinese empire (ignoring the various dinasties). Ancient China was miles better than Ancient Rome. They had advanced mechanisms, a great bourocracy, roads that spanned miles, impressive architecture, they invented paper, gun powder, and other things that the romans could not even fathom. The romans were masters of war, architecture and trade. They were more prone to adapt, evolve and bring everything the other cultures created to their max potential. Wich is good. But then you realise that the roman empire was probably doomed from the start. With the coming Julious Caesar. If you think about it. He was the one who actualy made the empire. All the following rulers had to do one thing: keep the territories he conquered But then everything went massively, inexplicably, horribly wrong... Rome is loved for the ideal of greateness that it rappresented. All the rulers that came after aspired to be Rome. But their view of Rome was more symbolical than anything. If I must be blunt. We should never strive to be like Rome. It's a sure path of self destruction. 🙄 Also. Many historians agree that what the romans did to Carthage might have been the firts recorded genocide in history. Mostly because they spared only a few and proceded to sistematicaly destroy the remains of their culture. Nothing remained of the carthaginians. Massacres happened all the time, yes, but never on such a large scale, and especialy not with the very specific desire to destroy a culture. Wich is what the romans wanted So yeah. (Some argue that the first genocide in history was that of Melos, committed by the athenians) I still like the Romans, since they are a part of my heritage. I just dislike the fact that they seem to eclipse all these other great cultures end empires that achieved even greater things. I mean. Look at the Incas. They achieved the same things in just 100 years ... Without horses and bulls ... They even made artificial valleys. And they achieved all of this in a mountanous terrain. By comparison, they are more impressive But people prefer the romans because they shaped the west. The romans were impressive, but are eclipsed by other cultures At least, in my opinion. And yes. It was dumb of me to downplay them in such a manner. I am at fault for that,.and again, I agree with you. Also. I checked that THING you mentioned. Bloody hell. I did not expect that. They even turned that into an holiday??? That is just insane. I knew that the persians behaved aggressively in certain periods of history. But still. The sassanid persians were the best tho. Right? They were not the ones who did this stuff. It happened during the times of Darius the great. The Achaemenid dinasty was rresponsible, not persian culture in general. Right? Still. I like the persians. Their history is very fascinating. They were basicaly the main rivals of the west for centuries.

He also streanghtened the connections between the West and the east. His empire was a wild card. 🤷 It came out of nowere, but had an absurd influence over our world's history 😐

  • @TheObserversTV

    @TheObserversTV

    2 жыл бұрын

    How come all of Western Anatolia is populated with Turks? It's the same concept, the Kurds, Turks and Arabs were Muslim, so the Kurds had the advantage over the Assyrian Christians in Upper Mesopotamia through raids and massacres, the Kurdish Emirs had support from the Seljuks and other sultanates. When the Medes took Arbil (It is still debated who occupied Arbil after the fall of the Neo-Assyrian empire, because many scholars believe the Babylonians took Arbil), it was still a Syriac-speaking majority Assyrian city, and was the center of Ishtar worship and then became the Syriac-traditional ecclesiastical province of the Assyrian Church of the East. The Kurdification / Kurdish emirate rule of Arbil started in the 10th century AD, and then the records show that the Kurds became the majority of Arbil in the 13th century AD.

    I am curious as how the last great king of media was dethroned. (Astyages 585-550 BC). And as usuall, legendary details are given to us by the greeks later on, but how credible are they? Herodotus says that Harpagus, a median noble and general saved cyrus's life. He defied orders to have him killed as an infant. (It seems astyages feared some prophecy about cyrus his grandson by his daughter mandane. When astyages discovered harpagus treachery, he fed him his own son at a banquet. This lead harpagus to flee and join Cyrus, and to help start a revolution against astyages. Think there is another account, saying cyrus was suckled by a prostitute or a slave woman of a herdsman named mithridates, while he grew up under hiding for some time....(probably a big offence for the rulers of persia, especially for the father of cyrus).
