Cylindrical Square, lapping.

Ғылым және технология

I had a spindle from the tail stock of a large lathe which I used as the basis for an accurate cylindrical square. Although the spindle was hardened it had some wear due to years of use on the lathe. This video shows how I lapped it true and checked it for squareness.

The rather unfortunate truth about really specialized tasks is that there's no glory in it. Very few people know how to do them right and few can appreciate the knowledge when it's shared. Some people do appreciate a nice piece of work and usually - but not always - more can tell when it's broken down. I've been looking for videos on this type of workmanship for ages and I'm glad I came across this one.

Great video Tony - thank you. I'm on a binge watch of all your stuff after looking at your motorcycle setup analysis tutorials as I have a new project and found them helpful for entering the correct data in to your program. Thank you for your time 😊

Nice work. I just came upon a large wrist pin from a marine diesel engine. Probably 8" long and 2" in diameter. I hope to turn it into a cylindrical square.

Nice work! You neglected to mention that, when you checked the top, and found it out of square, the other two sides, at 90 and 90 degrees to the leaning portions, would have been perfectly square and could have been so marked. Just saying...... :)

It was close to square but nothing is perfect. However, a cylindrical square is always square on two opposite sides if it is parallel. It is usual to check a cylindrical square and mark the two accurate sides.
