Josh Freedman Good point. Hemispheres was my favorite as a teenager, but I almost never found live versions of those songs, especially on official live releases. After Geddy shredded his voice “that time,” and by the time of Moving Pictures, I’m very curious as to how often they played this song, or anything off of Hemispheres. I’m sure they’d pull Cygnus out for certain tours, but as you stated, his vocals weren’t flawless, and sometimes just bad, or he’d flux depending on the night. I mean that’s an issue for many Rock singers, and most aren’t playing bass and keys, as Geddy started doing back then.

@@joshfreedman9695 Yeah some of the live recordings you can tell it's an uncomfortable range for him to sing in consistently. It's even noted by Terry Brown that the whole record was about a half step high for Geddy. Must have been tough to do that night in and night out.

This is about as good as a cover gets IMO. Perfect? No but, live is almost never perfect. PG did a pretty damn good job. As a wanna be guitarist, that's what I pick up on the most. But, I can hear the drummer is damn good(hard to fill gods shoes) the bassist is obviously skilled even if the tone isn't quite Geddy.(wouldn't expect it to be) and the singer, again, it's Geddy lee we're talking about the guy did a good job. This song is what broke Rush. And probably messed up Geds voice. Well played though. Really good cover and I'm usually hard on covers of Rush.

I don’t think this song “broke Rush” it was probably a combination of all these high notes mixed geddy aging and also heavy drug use throughout the 70’s that hindered his voice and it was real bad in the 90’s but he got some range back surprisingly during clockwork angels. So I don’t think that the band ever died in fact I think they are more intelligent as musicians.

I didn't even make it as far as..."every soul a battlefield....he might work better in an Iron Maiden tribute band cause he sure as $**t can't sing Geddy Lee from 78. Are you kidding? The internet frees everyone's inner critic I guess. I'm no Portnoy fanboy, but he covers this beautifully. Is it 100% perfect? Of course not. But it's close to it. The dynamics, metric changes and odd meters, and the actual beats and fills he pretty much nails. This song is probably one of the trickiest in the Rush repertoire and he flat knows this tune. He brings Peart's feel to this cover in a big way. I just couldn't disagree with you more on this. I think Portnoy covers this incredibly well. I'm being totally and completely sincere when I ask you this, but could you play this better than Portnoy? You're a drummer right? Most drummers would recognize this as being an excellent, and faithful cover of Peart's performance on this tune.

I will never understand the big deal about Portnoy. Having chops doesn't make you great anymore than having a Derek Jeter jersey makes you a great Yankee. Anything Portnoy has ripped off was done 20 & 30 years ago and done better. Listen to Porcupine Tree's drummer for a creative, innovative progressive player. Shame I always forget his name!!!LOL! This is horrible!
