"Cyclists Are Angry Left Wingers On Bikes!" | Alex Phillips Reacts To Jeremy Vine's War On Motorists

TalkTV’s Alex Phillips has labelled cyclists “angry left wingers on bikes” after videos emerged of Jeremy Vine in an altercation with a motorist.
The BBC and Channel 5 presenter clashed with a motorist on a busy London junction, with the driver telling him to “f*** off.”
Vine uses a 360 video camera to capture traffic incidents on camera in London and has caught foreign diplomats using their mobiles behind the wheel and van drivers dangerously cutting him up.
TalkTV's Kevin O'Sullivan and Alex Phillips join political commentator Leon Emirali to discuss the presenter's wish to uphold the Highway Code.

    I'm a cyclist. I've raced on a national level since the mid 1990s. Im also a car driver like many of us. I can hands on say that I generally hate the vast majority of my fellow cyclists. They are obsessed with thinking they own the road. Jump red lights, cut cars up, and rarely use a perfectly usable cycle lane where one is provided. Hi Vis Cycle Commuting Warriors are some of the worst. However, the worst thing I see is these mid life crisis spandex clad weekend Roadies who ride doubled up on a country road and NEVER let the cars past. I cannot believe how cyclists behave on the road these days.

    I'm a motorist of some 50 years and an occasional cyclist. As Britain hardly has any cyclists, relative to the rest of Europe, happily cyclists hardly feature on the motoring landscape outside of about 3 cities (one being London, of course). In all of my 50 years of driving, the cycling thing has been totally consistent, in that they delay me by about 2 minutes a year. Other than that, they're barely noticeable and there must be something wrong with anyone who gets excited over a form of transport that barely exists. This irrational hate of cyclists is a British thing, just like the non-existent lane discipline of drivers is. British motorists are toxic to anyone not in a car, and are backwards compared to French, German and a great many other European drivers. Like a great many people (as we saw in the pandemic) I would like to cycle a lot more, but won't due to the toxicity of British drivers. So instead I use my car too much, and join in with the chronic traffic congestion, which is said to delay each of us drivers by 25 hours on average each year. That's 2 minutes v 25 hours, every year.

    @@mgmpw32 Hmm. Depends on where you are. One cyclist can cause a lot of delay and issues. Get a gaggle of mid life crisis weekend riders on country roads, which happens a lot round by us and we can be delayed for ages. Also, there are a lot of fantastic cycle lanes round where we live, I know that because I rode on them. Yet idiotic cyclists chose to ignore them and ride on the road instead causing issues and delays. Cyclists actually cause a lot of issues. I see it first hand when riding and driving in my car.

    30 years ago I co-authored a cycling book for a county in England. Back then you'd go out on the bike in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and just casually take in the scenery, maybe stop for a pint at a local pub before returning home. Nowadays cycling has been overrun by angry middle aged, middle management men, clad in lycra and cameras, disgruntled with their life choices, angry at the world, whilst seemingly training for the Tour De France. It's as if they are asking to be punched in the face, so that they can post it on social media and play the victim card. It's quite pathetic really.

    I lived in a rural area until recently, and horse riders too, are an arrogant pain in the arse group. A friend of my brother had both his legs broken when an escaped horse (like the ones running wild in London) slammed into the front of his van forcing the engine back into his legs. Of course the horse owner didn't give a monkeys about the van man, and had no insurance either. It went to court for resolution. I myself was nearly kicked through the driver's window of the bus i was driving ,when the horse rider lost control ,and the horse bucked and reared, it was close..........

    Cyclists CHOOSE to ride on the roads, Their SAFETY is THEIR responsibility and to be aware of what is going on around them, are they so thick as to not think they don't have to look and use their brains? they KNOW doors suddenly open, but instead of being ready to swerve, they whine about the driver.

    The highway code requires drivers to look before opening a door, but also require cyclists to ride at last a metre clear of parked cars. The fact that many councils put cyclelanes in the door zone doesn't help though!

    Some cyclist are dangerous and need to do better, but so do car drivers. The must get in front attitude that puts a cyclist in danger to save seconds at the end of a journey isn't worth it. The majority of things that Vine highlights, the driver is in the wrong.

    Wrong….I cycle to work everyday. Im neither angry or left wing and as far from woke as you can get. I follow the highway rules and always use a cycling lane (when one’s available). Pigeon holing just gives motorists the attitude of yourselves. Your wrong and in many ways a danger to good and bad cyclists alike.

    Outside city centre pavements are almost completely empty... Make bicycles to be legal on pavements only with priorities for pedestrians....problem solved. On country roads (no pavements)....bicycles allowed 0.5m max. from the edge of the road.

  • @southwirralcyclist1986

    @southwirralcyclist1986

    Pavements on residential streets are extremely dangerous to cycle on. Pedestrians (and cars) emerge from driveways without warning. There are examples of pedestrians being killed that way and many are injured. In my opinion many shared pedestrian/cyclist shared paths are dangerous for the same reasons. Cyclists are advised to cycle in the centre of the lane on country roads for a reason, which is that they're more easily seen from a distance. If a driver overtakes a cyclist safely allowing a 1.5m gap, then on most country roads that's only possible when there is no oncoming traffic, by using the oncoming lane, which is possible even when the cyclist is riding mid-lane. The only exception is single lane roads, where a driver maybe able to pass with a 1.5m gap, if the cyclist moves close to the edge of the road. A cyclist should therefore move to the side if this is possible. Otherwise, if the vehicle has been following them for several minutes, they should find a safe place to pull in to allow the vehicle to pass.
