Maine spent his whole life pushing his body beyond his own limits, when that wasn't enough, he chromed himself out so he could finally push his limits beyond human capabilities. But not matter how much physical strength he had, his mind was just as fragile and ultimately suffered a horrifying fate many people fear when they mix their bodies with augmentations: cyberpsychosis. I also love how edgerunners showed you first-hand how terryfying cyberpsychosis is from a first-person point of view. we've seen how dangerous it is but to see it from a first-person perspective shows just how it's a fate worse than death. Madness from your abilities is always a gamble.

This episode made me think back to a lesson quote from an old cartoon; “sometimes the only way to push forward is to pull back.” He pushed his body too hard, and in return it pushed back harder. You can't wind down that's the life. You die like all the men you killed if your weak. Maine has killed too many to wind down, he has a target the moment he winds down he can't protect himself or dorio. That's the curse of the cyberpunk, the curse of those who run on the edge. Behind you are wolfs waiting for a moment of weakness, in front is a cliff. You either become food for the wolf or bones in a pit. The show never stated it directly but David and Maine knew. They knew the whole time......
More people should talk about David's expression at 1:45, there's just something so poetic about it and how his eyes were looking around as if he's trying distract himself from reality. His face just engraves the episode as it cuts to the ending credits is so wild.

This whole sequence is a work of genius I swear. From Maine going insane, to him being in an empty desert and the end of the road, to David, watching his mentor dying in slow motion, and lastly, him clutching Maines' hand while having a thousand-yard stare, still unable to compehand what happened. The music, the editing, the colors, the shot, the pace. Everything about it was perfect and in my humble opinion, a peak that 99.99999999% of media can never reach. We got Arcane and now this. What a time to be alive

Also Lucy's expression at 1:08, her eyes quivering with fear and helplessness as she listens to all manner of screams and explosions coming from above while the dial tone rings fruitlessly on. She was so afraid of being left alone again; the last one standing while all her companions die around her like what happened in the Arasaka hive (which, tragically, was her fate at the end of the series anyway). It explains why she was so adamant in keeping David away from trouble, so much so that she had to distance herself from him to deal with the prying eyes on him.

I think her plan was to tell the team that Tanaka didn't have the sht they needed so they would bail before the trauma team arrives but unfortunately she was still out cold irl and the situation just got worse when Maine's cyberpsycho symptoms started to show. A bit hazy on all the details but I don't think she wasn't being ruthless/heartless just cause, she killed Tanaka to erase any trace of data they had on David to prevent him being hunted down. Which is just even more tragic to think about because her trying to save David inadvertently caused Maine's and to an extent Dorio's death, both in which she probably cared for too.

I think the reason David reacts this way towards Maine's death and not his mom's is because he'd already used up all of his strength to hide that pain. He found shelter in Maine, perhaps seeing him as another parental figure, and once he loses him as well even after trying to do everything possible to prevent it, he essentially experiences both the pain of his mother's loss as well as Maine's. He can't hide from the pain any longer so he finally explodes.

really wasn't expecting a feeling of homage to the animatrix with this, but the artstyle within maine's hallucination totally makes me think of the artstyle for "world record" from the animatrix
I don't know if Ill ever be able to forget this scene. Maine's "This mess my fault?" is truly harrowing. The way Maine gently slaps David before telling him to run is one of the most brotherly and heartbreaking visuals they could have gone with.
The worst part is that not only did David see Maine die right in front of him, he watched him die slowly (due to the Sandevistan I presume) in what would otherwise be a quick death (technically speaking)
The way David's face is almost always contorted in this scene is really weird, I like it

Marine was such a cool and calm guy, like he was the "coolness"" itself. I liked him
0:59 I don't see anybody talking about the quick cuts here, but for me they're the best part of this whole scene. Like earlier, Maine is running down a massive highway in the desert- a highway that comes to an abrupt end. David passes him, running ahead on a road of his own, one only David himself can see. But for Maine, it doesn't go any farther. All he can do is watch as David leaves him behind and wish him the best. Damn.
the first time i saw this, i was blown away. the way the scene transitions to the sound of the car... no words, yet so much conveyed in those few seconds. by far the best and most artistic episode in the series.
This episode really stood out among all the others in the series. The desert imagery was fascinating to me, but I couldn't figure out why. After re-watching the episode a number of times I understood why it caught my attention. You never see Maine running. Maine is always wearing his tank top, even when not in the desert.
This is one of the best episodes in all of anime. A masterpiece.
Maine was David's model for an Edgerunner. As an Edgerunner, I think David felt he had to live up to that model. It was the only way he could think to honor Maine's memory. After all; if he didn't end up like Maine, that would make himself a failure in his eyes...or worse, it'd make MAINE a failure.
This is the real inflexion point of the series, this moment is the Beginning of the end for David
1:45 the fall of David
This anime is a solid 10 for me, it fucking broke me.
The optimism of titling this "Season 1" :D
One detail that enough people don't get, the reason he has Maine's arm is because even after all that...he still tried to save him. David tried his damndest to pull Maine out.
The phone ringing is usually something normal in Cyberpunk, but for me it is pretty haunting from Lucy's perspective.
Seriously, every moment in this anime is so much better than the video game. I want more of this cyberpunk in the video game
The animation went off the wall on this episode. It was instantly my favorite episode when I watched it and it still is.
JUST KEEP RUNNING...
I like how there was no music during the drive scene
Can't stop crying, saw the second half of the series high as fuck,it's something I will remember, music makes a scene.
0:08 - David is me when I make tea, only to find out the milk is off and have to pour it away.
Truly a the second saddest part in Edgerunners especially how it was directed
This show was the most beautiful I've ever seen in my goddamn life.
Maine was like a father to David. A father figure in a way. Hell maybe even his own kind of brother.
even a year later i watch it from time to time. Legendary anime
This episode is really what stood out to me the most and these couple minutes are definitely my favorite in the whole season. Need more
I remember watching this and thinking they genuinely killed David too and Lucy was gonna take the lead as just a broken solo runner, but somehow David living ends up worse for him in the end
God, the drive at the end hits hard. The silence and sound of the car on the road letting you absorb what you just saw. Beautiful.
I’ve seen this a hundred times. And still the music and that last look he gives him just breaks me
The facial expressions make this scene all the more better
I was not expecting this anime to be as good as it was
my favourite part in the whole show, their emotionless faces were so chilling
no matter how many times i watch this scene it always manages to hit just as hard, god i only wish the season was 2-3 episodes longer in the first half and this would've been even more devastating
i like to think that Becca was just sleeping trough this whole thing so imagine her freaking reaction after waking up lmfao "So did Kiwi managed to----fuck you mean Maine and Dorio are dead"
i can't imagine a moment when a simple calling sound effect can be this scary, the sound just keep getting louder and louder.
I wonder how much it would have destroyed lucy if the call had been dropped for even a few moments because of the explosion
If you think about it, David was probably watching Maine’s body being blown to bits in slow motion, while prying off his arms
Glad they upped the budget for this scene. Adds to the emotion tenfold
This shit hit hard man, crazy good scene
This show is a masterpiece and needs to be recognized for it!
Honestly this hit me more than David and Rebecca’s death
Maine's so underrated
