Cyberpunk 2077 Was A Mistake

In this video, I’d like to dissect the underlying foundation of Cyberpunk 2077, divorced from the glitches and bugs, however severe they may be. As per usual, I’ll be looking at gameplay first, followed by the main campaign and several side-missions, and conclude with the soundtrack and my final thoughts on the game.

Just wanna note down a couple of critiques that do not apply anymore with 2.0 update, moreso to adjust ppls’ expectations - The game is much more stable, and for as much as I’ve heard that the bugs still happen, they did not happen nearly as often in my playthrough, and were more on the minor side, mostly Bethesda-tier stuff like weird AI clipping. I’ve not experienced any of that myself but I do have a bug where giving one side character a phonecall softlocks the game, so my advice for if you ever get a phonecall implying dialogue options but not having any, you should reload the save immediately. - Perks and upgrades have been dramatically reworked, so you do now have to commit to a certain build in your playthrough. The upside is that the upgrade path is quite lenient so you can still spec a “master of none” character, but specializing gives its own upsides for different playstyles. Weapon buffs are also tied to skill trees, so choosing playstyles will also affect weapon preference, so as, say, being a netrunner will likely sway you towards mixing quickhacks with smart weapons (semi-auto aim guns) and/or monowire. - Enemies have been improved in 2.0 so that they can now use certain cyberware that the player has access to, most obviously visible with enemies being able to upload quickhacks to the player or using sandevistan to zoom around at hyperspeed.

    - I cannot assess driving in comparison to 2.0, but I am also weird for driving in first person like I play Gran Turismo 4, but one thing of note is that the Reflexes skill tree is probably worth looking into in terms of improving traversal, especially for Phantom Liberty, which I consider an essential purchase at the very least for receiving a bumped up level cap that allows for more leniency in builds. Anyway, Reflexes at level 15 has Dashing and Air Dashing, which is a really fun button to have for new players, and probably really worth speccing into in the first playthrough, as the double jump-air dash combo gives a lot of vertical mobility as well as making you move on foot about as fast as the slowest car in the game, which is still pretty fast. Personal opinion: I had no gripes with driving and I spend most of the time not fast traveling and just taking in the vibes, and if anything I see a quite common refrain nowadays that people don't do fast travel as much in 2077, so it's probably not just me. - To add to the speccing, with level 60 cap that Phantom Liberty gives, 3 out 5 skill trees can be maxed to level 20 simultaneously, with one additional tree having leeway to get into level 15, and if you have one tree leveled beyond level 6 (as in you got it to level 7 on accident) it's a sign that you need to commit to that tree to some extent to extract value out of that. The game has only one skill reset opportunity that they only added for returning players to be able to respec their builds with the 2.0 update, so that is your only chance to respec if you accidentally did mess up. I'm probably exaggerating the issue rn, but basically if you're above level 6 on a tree, you better commit to it.

    - Clothing no longer affects stats, it's just guns, perks, and cyberware now, and 2.0 has really made sure to make those things matter quite significantly. Imo dressing up the way you want makes for a more fun experience even for a first-person game, and this game does have a photo mode for a subset of ppl who really likes taking photos with their characters and such. The game feels a lot like an RPG in terms of speccing now imo Sidenote, I noticed that in the video there are plenty of Iconic weapons with attachments, so I have to note that Iconics are no longer customizable unless the rare x-MOD2 version of the weapon is used, which is something only certain weapons have now. Similarly, without x-MOD2 regular guns only accept certain upgrades that aren't attachments like scope/suppressor once, with no ability to change later without having to buy a new gun. That is the only way to upgrade regular guns anyway, as only iconics can be upgraded via crafting.

Personal take on the story: I don't agree with the characterization that the story of the game is a sequel hook, and if anything Phantom Liberty doesn't provide an ending that is actually satisfying per se in that sense. Getting the new ending does require playing Phantom Liberty in a specific way, but frankly there is that theme going around in the universe of the game that there are no true happy endings in Night City, and I think watching Edgerunners prior to playing the game primed me to that conclusion more easily than if I didn't. It's the most disagreeable part of the video in my view, but here I'm meant to inform rather than disagree so I'll reserve that. Doing Edgerunners-style builds is very fun in 2.0 btw, being like David, Lucy, Becca or Maine is very much achievable and plays quite as expected, so if you do think about playing one of those styles, the game suits those really well now, everything is there as expected, besides the cyberskeleton David gets in the end, which I don't think most ppl in Night City would want anyway. Also they made Adam Smasher somewhat more like a lore Adam Smasher, because the way he used to be in 2077 is downright comical compared to the lore.

Lol SomeOrdinaryGamer actually pointed out that the enemies spawning directly in front or behind you was a feature and not a bug. The game simply never came with the complex enemy AI that we were expecting. There only fix for this was to increase the radius at which they spawn around you from like 20m to like 40m. The issue is, not that the game is released it’s unlikely that this specific issue will ever be addressed besides changing the radius again. They would need to completely rework enemy AI and possibly other aspects of the game and that’s just not gonna happen. We’ll be lucky if they ever even fix enough bugs for the game to be considered somewhat “polished”. This game was a failure and anyone who pretends it wasn’t a massive let down is still in denial about their sweet sweet 60 bucks. We burnt it bois, it’s over. It’s not the end of the world. New and better games will come out that are actually deserving of our money.

Totally agree with your assessment. Ultimately greed ruined what could have been the game of the century. As it stands CD Project Red is going down a dark path from here. If we consider the path they chose here in the making of this game, years from now they will probably be unrecognizable from any other triple A company, like EA or Ubisoft. The Witcher 3 may have been their last truly exceptional title before greed completely overtakes them. I still hope for the best for them though. I know there are many passionate developers at CD Project Red still working hard to deliver a well crafted project made with love and passion. But the incompetent execs are as always hell bent on ruining it like every other sociopathic, money grubbing ceo/exec, who only sees dollar signs.

Only time will tell where they end up, but I can already sense an "Assassin's Creed Unity" situation where they'll give away the expansions for free because the base game launched broken. A bit ironic since you mentioned the comparison to Ubisoft down the line. I hope for the best, especially because there are so many talented people at the studio, but I'm not expecting them to return to their "Witcher 3" style of consumer-friendly practices anytime soon.

@@ShyCorn The fact that they said they'll reconsider the multiplayer for cyberpunk 2077 is already a good sign, but it doesn't change the fact that the execs are now partially beholden to shareholders, sigh... And all their talk after the release of the game and even their apology has been aimed at the shareholders. I guess they have to take care of them first and get them out of the way. We'll see how they handle witcher con.

It wasn't just greed. So many pieces have to align just right for a flop like this, one of which is that you need a developer blinded by their ambition. The executives had nothing to do with that particular piece. Also, sociopathic? Stop huffing your own farts, and stop allowing Elizabeth Holmes to live rent-free in your head.

Interesting that the Mantis Blades weren't mentioned because from what I hear, they're disappointing compared to what the trailers sold. Bear in mind that one of the reasons the main story doesn't quite deliver is because once Keanu Reeves was signed to play Johnny Silverhand, CDPR had to overhaul the game. CDPR's decisions weren't drive by money. Hell, all the delays in the world wouldn't have saved this train wreck because there are too many fundamental issues that can't be fixed with patches and content updates. For example, CDPR decided to use REDengine 4, an engine that was never built for something on Cyberpunk 2077's scale. So, even if the game becomes perfectly stable, Night City will still feel barren, in a manner of speaking, because the game will still lack the little details that GTA or Bethesda's RPGs have. Not to mention the game's story never throws a critical lens on the cyberpunk genre or truly grapples with the question of "what are we when we are more machine than human?" Instead, it opts for a greatest hits of plot beats from Ghost In The Shell, The Matrix, and more. There's also the fact that it throws a reverence at punk subculture that borders on idolatry. It's extremely unlikely that anything will top the fall of Cyberpunk 2077 because so many things have go wrong in order for masterpiece of a disaster to be the end result

I gotta say CD red has no excuse for all of the mistakes from the desition to not drop the console version to all the glitches but that doesn't mean that the entire fault is falls on them, the reason is because they where able to afford it, meaning the games was pretty much paid for, this is the reason why you shouldn't preorder people, if the suits at the company don't have profit until the games releases they will put out a better product knowiny that they need to do so if they want profit from the sales but they people that preorder basically paid for the game and given the ability to release it and move to the next project, remember a company's job is to make money, or job should be to not paid the company for a product that we have no idea if it's going to work or not, after years of this happening and many examples like no man skies or Fallot 76 people that preorder ruin the game as much as the greedy of the suits at the company.

I really love how melee combat feels, but mantis blades are outright broken. The animation where you grab the enemy and hold them above you needs to be sped up or outright removed. Because when it happens, and it's basically almost guaranteed to happen, you're stuck there locked in an animation where enemies get free shots on you. I've had countless times where I've done that animation on my melee character build and have died because of it. It made me want to just not use them at all. Also the fact, when you enter the slow motion state, and the animation happens, you're screwed, as the time for it to end is almost doubled. So it's guaranteed death at that point. The mantis blades need to be heavily reworked, as do many other things in this game.

I bought the game a few months after release, played it for less than an hour and uninstalled after being soft locked just after meeting Jackie. I didn't even get to the part where you get double crossed by a fixer. I then heard the hype about update 2.0 just before Phantom Liberty was released and I was blown away. In the early game everybody screws you over. You learn quickly to distrust everybody you do business with. Night City is crawling with human garbage. I remember a dynamic scene where I saw a policeman brutally executing someone they had arrested and who was on their knees. I killed the officer and got an acheivement. The assault on the tower was one of the very best experiences I have had in gaming for ages. It was full of tension and action that only the veey best developers are capable of. On the topic of bugs I had 2. There was a street where all the cars were floating 3 feet off the ground and an NPC glitching so hard into a car their limbs stretched and contorted like plastic man causing the car to explode. My son also played his own save and he was that impressed that he purchased Phantom Liberty immediately after his playthrough. The 2 endings I played through left me feeling totally hopeless and gutted for V. I would urge anyone who liked the idea of Cyberpunk 2077 but was let down at launch to give it another shot. I promise you will not be let down. It's a redemption arc comparible to No Man's Sky in my opinion. Btw I love your content. Only just discovered your fantastic channel. Keep up the great work!

I didn't play it until 2.0 dropped so I really can't comment on the options and decisions made but in my playthrough I saw many decisions that impacted the world and relationships with the people you meet. There were certain decisions that changed the game massively between my playthrough compared to my son's. Your follow up video may still be accurate but I can only comment on what I actually played. What I played blew my socks off. In terms of this video I agree with a lot of ur points. The others have either been fixed or I disagree with. The ones that have been fixed are the driving, and the RPG elements as they added transmog and the ability to fully change your appearance. As for the endings I really doubt it was sequel bait as going through them I legit can't see it (there's an argument for v going into space but that's kinda pushing it). I think the idea was to intentionally make the endings hollow to show the harshness of the current world they live in and NC, that there's a cost to everything even becoming a legend. It's not the best executed I'll admit. Tho don't fear the reaper (the secret ending) is probably the best of them and I'm surprised u didn't mention it (if u didn't know about it thats honestly fair tho) For the side missions being better than the main ones I'll agree to an extent. From what I heard this was an intentional design choice to address the common complaint people had with Witcher 3 that the main missions were too much long and too much. Something I honestly couldn't disagree with more. It's a shame this game didn't live up to it's potential but as an experience in a vacuum I'd say it's quite an amazing one. And I hope they're next title learns from the mistakes here. I'd give the game a 9.5, with a flawed masterpiece title

Nice critique but I don't agree about endings being just for expansions. It didn't seems that way to me, I think that paid expansions wont add content after the endings. And it wasn't a mistake, maybe the title is more interesting that way but there's potential and some gained experience, we will see if there's changes in CDPR board and marketing team. In my opinion they are not in the same group as ubisoft, ea or activision for now, we'll see with expansions and if we're patient the next witcher game. This isn't Fallout 76 or Anthem even if there are similarities.

I very much disagree with your assessment of this game being a mistake. It's like saying the original Witcher game was a mistake. That first game was a learning experience for CD:PR developers, their first dive into their very own 3rd person RPG (the previous Baldur's Gate project was pretty much a localization job) and it certainly shows. The original Witcher is very far from being perfect: the combat mechanics sucks; the game engine was not fit for the job; the animations were archaic - even for the period; the leveling system was rudimentar and "grindy", especially in Chapter 3; and bugs! Yes, bugs. Lots of them. From minor glitches to game crashing bugs - witcher fandom has an entire section dedicated to those. Afaic, the story is the only redeeming thing about that game. An experience, however, for developers and players alike, that become the foundation for what came next. Cyberpunk 2077 is just like that. Their very first dive into the 1st person shooter genre with RPG elements in an open-world sandbox, while developing the engine and systems to support it. There are lots of things CDPR missed in this game from a technical point of view but, where it shines, it glows. As far as "Story" is concerned, I very much liked it. Both main and side quests were enjoyable. The care and attention to details the developers put into environmental story-telling completed the package for me. If CDPR carries this learning to improve the next games - and I'm sure they will -, Cyberpunk 2077 can't never be "a mistake".
