its surprising what a simple+cheap motor swap can do for toy grade stuff sometimes.. if the toy's ESC section can feed the new higher demand. find+download Mabuchi's small brushed DC motor spec sheets (PDF), tells about the many different types of 130 180 260 280 370 380 390 motors. same size motor with different letter codes, all "wired" different.. armature wire diameter, brush timing (clockwise neutral counterclockwise rotation) power output torque+rpm efficiency etc. the chart is really handy for mini hobby grade motor selection too, same motor for 2 bucks that a "hobby company" will slap a sticker onto and charge ya 15 bucks for it WHY?

these run 1S so don't expect miracles but.. there are some pretty strong 130 motors available in fleeba-hay about 2 bucks. looking at Mabuchi's spec sheets for their letter designations, when you're shopping, is very helpful. they're square metal at the brush cap, not rounded off plastic. different colored plastic has different meanings too, I've had white pink blue yellow green all spinning different rpm from same input voltage. I'd replaced "toy grade" 130 motors with the metal cased 130's in a toy grade crawler's motor+axles, lost some top speed but the torque gain was well worth the 3 bucks. I've also seen a heavily loaded 130 motor burn the insulation off the motor leads (wire too small?), but the same size wire feeding a 180 motor, no issue at all while delivering more power to the wheels... (longer armature windings = higher resistance = lower current draw, with higher magnetic output) long story short... I'd bet the "right" motor in one of these could scoot!

I may try brushless but I'm not sure yet. They are just fine for basic scooting around as is.

@@RunThatRC yup, fast enough to tip over if steering hard+fast. can't remember where I downloaded the Mabuchi spec PDF file from, but it tells the "SH" "FS" "FK" and other letter designations, for rpm, torque, watts etc. really handy to have it open when motor shopping, better detailed info so you get an idea of the results. also pay attention to rotation (CW/CCW) indicates brush timing, or you might get sluggy forward and fast reverse. its possible to gain 10-25% more speed, for 2 bucks or less, without changing anything electronics. detail, the mini D12 has frame rails right in the way preventing a 180 motor being dropped in. with this one it looks like some rear wheel well could be trimmed away to allow it?

The stock motor is already pretty good. I was going go put in a Tamiya mini4wd motor but when i opened the stock motor, to my surprise, it's pretty decent quality as it came with carbon brushes. It looks similar to the ones in mini z. If you want more speed, convert it to 2s like me. Stock is around 8km/h and 2s is aroung 20km/h. The electronocs ca take it. A 2s 450mah lipo is the biggest you can squeeze in with JST plug. I put mini4wd one ways wheels in the rear to act as a diff along with their large diameter slicks. This thing turns so smoothly now. This gives the mini z a run for its money. It's even got auto power off.

I cut the springs but that made them pop off a lot. You can probably find a way to make it secure. I would probably look for softer springs from a pen that may fit.
