Cwmbrân: ‘Lle mae’r Dyfodol yn Digwydd yn Awr!’ gan Susan Fielding
Cafodd Cwmbrân, a ddewiswyd yn hoff Dref Newydd Prydain* yn ddiweddar, ei hadeiladu fel rhan o raglen uchelgeisiol i weddnewid bywydau miliynau o bobl wedi cyni’r Ail Ryfel Byd. Er nad yw’n cael llawer o sylw, mae Cwmbrân yn enghraifft hynod ddiddorol, a hynod bwysig, o sut y cafodd cynllunio a phensaernïaeth eu cyfuno i greu math newydd o dref i’r werin. Yn y sgwrs hon fe olrheinir hanes Corfforaeth Datblygu Cwmbrân ac eglurir pam mae Cwmbrân - man geni’r Cyfeillion Eglwysi Di-gyfaill, lleoliad cwmni cynhyrchu tinsel mwyaf Ewrop, cartref y Wagon Wheel, a phrifddinas parcio di-dâl y byd - mor bwysig yn hanes amgylchedd adeiledig Cymru.
Seilir y sgwrs hon ar y cyhoeddiad digidol ‘Cwmbran New Town: An Urban Characterisation Study’ gan Susan Fielding a fydd ar gael maes o law: siop.cbhc.gov.uk/collections/...
Cwmbran: ‘Where the Future is Happening Now!’ by Susan Fielding
Voted Britain’s favourite New Town*, Cwmbran was built as part of an ambitious, Britain-wide programme to transform the lives of millions in the aftermath of the Second World War. Although often overlooked, Cwmbran is a fascinating, and highly significant, example of how planning and architecture were combined to create a new type of town designed for the people. This talk will chart the building history of the Cwmbran Development Corporation and explain why Cwmbran - birthplace of the Friends of Friendless Churches, Europe’s largest tinsel producer, home of the Wagon Wheel, and free parking capital of the world - is so important in the history of the built environment of Wales.
This talk is based on the forthcoming digital publication ‘Cwmbran New Town: An Urban Characterisation Study’ by Susan Fielding: shop.rcahmw.gov.uk/collection...

Finally, we get officially acknowledged from the heritage sector. My Dad worked for Cwmbran Development Corporation until moving on. His window overlooked Twmbarlwm and he kept a diary record of sunsets over its pimple for years - a phenomenology and psychogeography of Crow Valley. Too many green sites have been built on - Henllys, Hollybush jr school, the border between Pontnewydd and Pontypool along the canal, take your pick. The price of progress? Shout out to Fairwater shops, the height of brutalist and minimalist architecture,.especially the chippy of my childhood and Joe’s barber (part of the local Taffia with Natale’s and Kings).
