On this one yes the patient may just be hysterical because they’re drunk, but I do know someone who freaked out like this about not wanting an article of clothing cut off. It wasn’t until he sobered up later that he was able to explain to the staff why he was so upset. His best friend died the day before and the sweatshirt was the last birthday present he had ever gotten from his best friend. He was drunk because he had been trying to drink away his sorrows from losing his best friend. I always think about that when I see something like this now. I definitely understand that the patient safety has to come first, but I definitely cringe and wonder why the patient is so upset. Are they just drunk, or are they dealing with trauma/loss?

@@gabrielleaskari707 I just know how many people cope with the loss or trauma by doing what is the social norm these days and having a stiff drink. I don’t really understand it myself, this isn’t a healthy grieving process. Unfortunately though it seems to have become the acceptable norm. Which tends to make the grief worse. Alcohol is a scientifically proven depressant. So how it became the social norm to drink when you’ve had a bad day, I don’t really get it. I had always felt that way even before this happened to my friend, but I will say ever since this happened to my friend it’s what comes to my mind first. I’m also always inclined to wonder if the patient is having a diabetic emergency, because they either didn’t realize the alcohol would affect their diabetes or didn’t know they had diabetes? This can definitely make a drunk person far more hysterical. Having a blood sugar issue can cause almost anyone to become hysterical whether that’s going to low or too high, add alcohol and it’s a bad mix. I don’t think I’ll ever get over how many people don’t realize how quickly alcohol is broken down into a sugar in the bloodstream. Diabetes is prevalent in my family and so I had to learn a lot about it really early on.

I was thinking in this scenario, would it be possible to cut the front panel as a whole piece. So they could make something w the image if it's sentimental? I know that's not always possible. Just cut up the side seams and across the shoulders. Off in 2 large pieces.

When I was in school one of my teachers told us to cut off everything but the bra. She was like, “we can almost always spare 10 seconds to see if there’s another way to take the bra off; especially if you have a very endowed pAtient on the table, cutting that bra off may be costing them hundreds of dollars and literal hours of research and fittings.” and that stayed with me. There were times it annoyed coworkers, but I’ve had so many patients thank me for it during or after; not only that, bust seriously in my entire career (which was admittedly not all in the ER, but I spent some years there and on a prison island where we often had to treat trauma in house, on a speed boat, on on the landing pad waiting for a medical flight) I can only remember three times when we absolutely had to cut the bra off. A level one or two trauma center is going to have a much greater diversity of emergencies, so I know they are likely to have to do it much more often, but I still think it’s done way more than necessary - and no tea no shade but by more male physicians than female (but only because the males don’t personally no the struggle to find a good bra)

I'm not upset by the ruined clothes, I get upset when after they've checked you, they don't try to give you privacy and help cover you up (like breasts, genitals, etc.). Even when there are other non medical people around walking by with their phones out, they could easily take a photo if it's a public area, etc.. I've seen this happen in videos of accidents (like on bondi beach) where even after they stabilized the person, they let a group of bystanders just gawk at the now exposed woman. I also had this happen to me in an urgent care/dr office, I was in the room, chest exposed while the nurse was doing something, but the nurse didn't have the decency to close the door and other patients walked by and looked right at me. Still bothers me to this day. I think medical professionals get so used to seeing bodies, they forget that this is OUR body so we don't want everyone to see our privates and it feels like a Hippa violation to me to needlessly expose a patient any longer than needed. And do they not think of sexual assault victims feelings too?

  • @iz2333

    @iz2333

    Жыл бұрын

That is actually true, it's very easy to forget stuff like that because you get so used to seeing bodies. Of course there's also the stress of working with emergencies and constantly running from room to room. Though that's not an excuse, just an explanation. Patients are vulnerable and healthcare workers should always make a reasonable effort to preserve their dignity. Closing the door while they're naked is the absolute least one should do.

I was hit by a car some years ago and I distinctly remember the paramedic saying he was going to cut the leg of my pants (my leg was busted). I started protesting and saying no, they were my favorite pair of pants, please don't cut them, etc. Thing is, I hated those pants lol. The shock was making me behave very unlike myself. I also gave the police officer who was in the ambulance with me a combination of all the addresses I'd every lived at when he asked for my details, then told him "none of that was correct, you'll have to ask me again later." It was a weird feeling being aware that what I was saying and doing made no sense, but not being aware enough to do anything about it.

In 1974 my sister was in a car accident where there were two fatalities; her head was embedded in the roof of the car and it took the fire department quite a while to get her out. I had to pick up her belongings at the hospital in Collingwood because she had to be transferred to Toronto due to the serious head injury. When I looked at her clothing in the bag, I was surprised to see that they did not cut her top off. That blew my mind because who does that when someone has a serious head injury? I remember the top well and it was a very form-fitting top which was in fashion at that time. Even her pants weren't cut off of her. The neurosurgeon gave her a 5% chance of survival because in 1974, they still weren't sure how to treat head injuries properly. By some miracle she survived but suffered slight brain damage and is now epileptic and has no sense of smell. It took a total of 5 operations to finally repair her brain injury. They took so much tissue from her thighs that they are now concave. Both thighs were operated on twice in an attempt to get the correct amount of tissue. Surgery number 5 was the final one because someone figured out that they needed more tissue than they thought because it tended to shrink when they adhered it to her brain. She was with three friends and the accident was the driver's fault. She ended up hitting another vehicle head on and the couple were dead instantly. My sister sustained the most serious injury in the car she was in. Her friend, who was the driver and at fault, got off with only a broken arm. One girl had a concussion and the other girl had a broken jaw and an injured hand. Edit: I've tried to condense this, but there's so much more to the story.

At the hospital the Doc knew I needed a cath - I mean, duh. But the POS nurse obv didn't want to cath me so tried putting it off (disappearing so my partner had to go find her...repeatedly) she also wouldn't just cut my sweats. I'd had those ones put on me so they could be cut off, but she basically told me I was being a baby, yet this incident left me partially paralyzed. (I had almost 2 liters in my bladder when I finally did get cathed. Imagine how painful that would be! And that's not even considering the pain of spine injury.) I haven't been in one of these situations, but if I was, I wouldn't let them cut or take my clothes off. Yes, I care about my clothes but its more of the fact of not having any on. Honestly, I'd rather die. Not even exaggerating.

Well, if you don't let them take them off and can't do it yourself but are still capable of making decisions, that's your choice. Though you probably shouldn't call an ambulance if you don't want medical care.

I once talked a paramedic into not cutting off my new sweatshirt that I had just bought. They thought I was bleeding badly due to stains on the white shirt but it was just cola. I had saved for that shirt at 18 and meant to keep it. Lol

At the stable, I used to go riding at, a girl broke her leg from a fall. Our riding instructor told the paramedics to please make a clean cut down the side, because those boots are hellishly expensive and that way you can at least sew in a zipper. They did. The student was really grateful for that, as she had particularly expensive gear.

I broke my back a few months ago sledding and I am super happy that the ER nurses were able to get my jacket off without cutting it. Also, I know this is kind of late, but your videos helped a lot, especially ER don't wait for no one, while I was lying in a bed in the hallway waiting to see what was wrong with my back, so thank you!

My dad had a stroke in 2007 and passed away in the hospital about a week later, but he never really regained consciousness before that, and my siblings and I, with our delightful senses of humor, often comment on how at least he didn’t ever have to find out they had cut off his favorite shirt, because he would have been so pissed. 😅 (also that he would have been mad that he was knocked out for the medevac to the larger hospital, that actually would have been a dream come true to ride in one, probably minus the medical emergency with his life in jeopardy part….)

People respond to pain in different ways, especially if that pain is very high and they've not had to deal with pain in their life much before that moment. And of course if you don't have any sort of training on how to react to trauma you'll go into shock and that also manifests very different for everyone. I just wonder if Francis is still alive or not... .

I had the opposite problem. I told the nurse to just cut my snow glove off after I dislocated my ring finger. She tried pulling it off twice and I screamed both times. She then cut it off and then said "Oh that is bad. I'm going to go hurry up the doctor."

It broke my dads heart, as well as mine, that they had to cut my dad out of his 30 year old paragliding suit when he had a bad accident and crashed in a 20 meter tree. But it probably saved his life or at least his ability to walk because they wouldn't have been able to get to his crushed up pelvis and thighbone otherwise. (But he still has the leftover pieces)

When I was in college, I got rammed by another vehicle and had to get cut out of my car. I was wearing a leather jacket at the time (really heavy one, it probably saved several of my ribs and my collar bone from the seatbelt, while the seatbelt was busy saving my life) , and when they got me into the ambulance they told me that they would have to cut the jacket off. I managed to talk them into wriggling me out of the jacket, but.. my t-shirt did have to go. So it's not just drunks, sometimes a piece of clothing just has really deep meaning. I still have that jacket 30 years later.

lol If it's not a situation that requires split second reactions, then just cutting along the middle of the seams will make it so the garment can be repaired at a later date by the patient.

I was shot in the face/ head when I was 19 and I was wearing my all time favorite orange shirt. Through the whole ordeal I did everything I could to negotiate with the medics to not cut my shirt off. I lost the negotiations but I did go back to the store for a receipt of the replacement shirt and sent it to the state crime compensation committee for reimbursement lol! It's been 20 years now and I still miss that shirt!

I had to have a cesarean section with to have my son, so I had to take off all my jewellery. I was so weak that they were talking about cutting all my piercings out, and cutting my rings off (my fingers were swollen, and they wouldn't come off easily). I refused, and made my boyfriend take my piercings out. The anesthesiologist walked into the room and stopped for a second when he saw my boyfriend with his hands in my mouth trying to remove my tongue ring. The anesthesiologist actually lubed my fingers up to help get my rings off. 😂
