This is a great video. I needed to cut foam for window seat cushions and found your tutorial. Many thanks!!
Awesome tip! Worked perfectly- a nice clean smooth cut. Thanks for posting this.
Cutting wedges in order to curve the foam is exactly the solution I'm looking for. Dunno why I didn't think of it! ;) Thanks!!
Wonderful, useful, hack for the average DIY person. Good on you for making it available. Thanks.
very useful for a design assignment I have to build and I do have an electric knife at home. Gave me lots of ideas. thank you from Costa Rica

This video was very informative. I think it might now be much more worthwhile to invest in an electric kitchen knif e to things like cutting foam into shapes i want.
Thank you I would of never thought of a electric kitchen knife. 😊

Thanks for this. I still have a working electric kitchen knife from my late mother. It's at least 50+ years old and we still use it for carving a chicken or a roast. My mother would have had fits seeing cutting foam with it.

I would not use one that old, it may be considered an antique. Just go pick one up from a department store, they are cheap enough, usually under $15 dollars.
This is great stuff!
Thanks for this. Was trying to cut 4" foam with a sawsall and it wasn't working at all. The electric knife cut thru it like butter!
Good tips, thank you!
so much better than the other video
You may purcahse the Acu-Cutter and foam from sailrite.com. The electric kitchen knife can be purchased at any box store including Walmart.
thanks 4 a tip from COLOMBIA!!

@@ghousalishahsahb6859 i strongly recommand you to use an electric knife (there is some cheap kitchen electric knife to cut meat that will perfectly work). In my experience that is the best way to have a smooth finish. Best regards!
Very useful info,thanks
Good job, thank u!
Thanks for sharing this video!! Have you ever tried using an electric kitchen knife on 2 1/2" eggcrate foam? Thanks again! Great job!! 👍😊
great video.
Is a good video. thanks for show the process. Sorry about my english. bye friends. Watching from Panama.
We glue Dry Fast foam with 3M General Trim Adhesive. When gluing a closed cell foam use 3M Super Trim Adhesive. When gluing Polyurethane foam from Sailrite we use the 3M General Trim Adhesive or 3M Super 77 spray adhesive.
So simple, so perfect, so "Why didn't I think of that?!!!"
Nicely done
Awesome video! Thanks!!

Thanks for your positive comments.
I have used an electric kitchen knife on the following types of foam: Dry Fast foam #103165, Reflex BioCide Foam #100160 and it has typically worked great. Most of our foams are not very soft.

Excellent very informative
which kind of electric kitchen knife do you recommend? Do they all do the same kind of job or is one more messy than another?
For a one person angled cut, couldn't you line the bottom of the foam up with the edge of the table and guide it by feel while watching the top line during the cut?
Did you use one blade or two with the electric knife and what brand knife did you use?
Sounds like your foam is like our closed cell foam and yes you should be able to cut it with the electric kitchen knife well.
I've used the electric kitchen knife at home, but always coveted your professional product (they had one where I used to work) - thought: Compress foam (clamp) before cutting with kitchen knife -
thank you very informative :)

Cool deal dude! electric carving knife works great , got one at Walmart on sale for a mere $5.00!!! And check this out, it works even better for carving turkey, hams, and roasts. Lol
great vid thanks
You know, I have found that ANY good serrated bread knife will work. It might be a better purchase because you'll use it more often. I picked mine up from Mr Bezos' little company for $20...actually it's the best knife I have ever used, maybe the best thing I have bought in the last 10 years...and I have never been one to be easily enthused by a kitchen implement ! Mine worked extremely easily, threee clean strokes got me through a 6" Firm, though I think maybe that's because it was new and sharp.
I'm Tom Bodett for motel 6 and we will leave the light on for you!
I would use a clamp to hold the knife upside down from the edge of the table and then guide the foam like you would on a band saw. I'm going to try with some memory foam.
Wonderful tutorial, straightforward, clear and concise. I just wish these videos would dispense with the background music... almost all of them do it and it's very annoying

It just occured to me that it would be interesting if youtube provided an option to have music as a second track that the view could turn on or off. I have auditory processing impairment, and the music makes it more difficult to decyper the voice instructions.
awsome!
thanks a lotl
Which glue do you recommend to use on foam?
I have used an electric knife. But for a cut that looks like the factory edges, a band saw is best. With a band saw you can get 1/2 inch thick pieces, rounded corners, and very complex shapes. Just use very low feed speeds. A table saw works too, but needs a very sharp blade, a very slow feed, and definitely push sticks. Using a band saw, I have cut 1 inch foam slabs to use for greenhouse gaskets, contoured to fit kayak transportation pads, a soft Valentine heart, furniture cushions of complex shapes, and a variety of small packing strips to close air gaps around doors and windows. The band saw is faster than an electric knife, is more precise, and gives a far better edge surface.
I tried an electric knife on foam, but it wouldn't slice through it at all. What kind of foam are you using? I was using a very soft foam.
Hey wifey! I’m using the Turkey knife to cut stuff! It might not be so sharp for Thanksgiving this year! lol

Is foam ever sold as a wedge-- like a bench seat-back that's wide at the bottom, narrower at the top? (You'd need a really long knife for that.)

how can you dry a soaken wet foam?
@SailriteDIY
8 жыл бұрын
+Kathy torres If it is dry fast foam, simply set the cushion on its side (if it was covered in a breathable fabric) and it will dry out in a few hours. If it is a polyurethane foam then you will have to take the foam out of the cover and set it on its side for many days until it dries out.
