    Cutlass Black side doors can also be used to get back into the ship, as long as you're on even ground. In uneven terrain it won't work. CiG really needs to give these doors a ladder. A number of times I locked myself out by landing on difficult terrain.

    Excellent video, thank you for making this. I feel like they're both great ships with slightly different strengths. The Cutlass leans more towards combat drop ship (get off planet with the cargo) where as the Freelancer feels more blockade runner (armored truck with teeth). I don't think you can really go wrong with either it just which way your play style leans.

    One thing to note when comparing is that the Cutty can transport only one Prospector worth of quant from the refinery while the Freelancer can do two at a time. This makes the Freelancer much more desirable if you are a miner. (Though I still like the Cutty overall)

    With how "lucky" I get with 30k's, pirates and whatnot, I would not load more than one Prospector's worth of refined quant at a time anyway. I'd be way to salty if I lost two trips worth, when I could run less risk by doing another trip. However, if and when we get PES, and when mobile refining becomes a thing, those "small-to-mid" capacity haulers will have their time to shine. When you have say 3 prospectors, 1-2 of the refinery ships (forgot their name) and want to sell, then the freelancer max will be hard to beat in price/performance ratio for that case. I just do not like its handling and paper thin hull.

    For the Mining game Play the Freelancer MAX doubles as your main cargo hauler for refined goods and main cargo hauler for the ROC. With each reset you can easily get into the loop by working up to a prospector and MOLE. You really should not risk hauling any load bigger than what a max can carry to the TDD unless you have so much money it does not matter loosing a million dollar plus load.

    From experience, this is what I've found about the Cutlass Black and Freelancer: If I want a ship to just fly around and do whatever in, I'll opt for the Cutlass. It's just easy getting in and out of it, and it maneuvers much better than the Freelancer. But when it comes to doing NPC bounties or something with fighting involved, I find that I have zero fear of fighting in the Freelancer with those 2 shields. The weapons are as powerful as the Cutlass, but now I'm suddenly not afraid to stay in the fight. The Cutlass isn't bad at fighting, but that one shield is a pain, and if you get one of your VTOL engines blown off, that's it. Game Over. Aesthetically, I love the Cutlass more, but there's something to be said about the Freelancer feeling tankier, like I can take on anything and not get shot down.

  • @Space-Tech

    @Space-Tech

    Жыл бұрын

    Very much identify with your experience myself! I think that more limited visibility in the freelancer actually adds to the feeling of tankiness. I must say that the ease of getting in and out of the Cutlass definitely plays a role with how much I enjoy using it as a daily driver :)

  • @IXxJordan

    @IXxJordan

    Жыл бұрын

    Cutlass has a split shield so getting hit from the sides there is no shield protection, so something that can out maneuver you can take out those engines pretty quickly and is one of the huge glaring issues with it - especially things that fire missiles, they seem to home in from the sides and are usually direct hits on the engines if they get through

  • @Space-Tech

    @Space-Tech

    Жыл бұрын

    Split shields actually still provide full coverage for a ship, it's just divided into the front and back half, there are no ships with intentional shield holes, yet. The graphic shown on the MFD is actually pretty misleading. But yes those engines can get shot off quite easily in battle, unfortunately

    As someone who wants to do bounties and PvP in a freighter-ship, I agree that the Freelancer series can joust much better than the Cutlass because of those shields. Also your larger silhouette will inevitably make you an easier target to focus on for group fights, so more shields is good. And if the baddies see you seem to survive too long and begin targeting your buddies, you can hit back surprisingly hard! Overall, while I would normally like to have the Freelance MAX for the larger cargo space, the normal FL has more armor, so it'll last much longer in a fight. Better alive though suboptimal than dead and waiting for claims haha

    I own a Cutlass Black. Bought because it can haul a ROC. With my focus being aimed far more to mining than anything combat related. It's likely to be a long time before I even try to target another ship. I have my sights set on purchasing a Freelancer Max. Because it can also haul a ROC-DS and it holds enough cargo to handle at least 3 full runs from a Prospector. Which means I could spend more time mining and less time hauling. From a cargo hauling standpoint I don't currently see the purpose or value of flying a C2. That's a whole lot of cargo space and not all that often you can expect to find enough product to fill it to make a good profit.

  • @Space-Tech

    A strength of these ships is how they mix with mining. The Cutlass Black can carry one ROC, with space to walk around it. The base Freelance can carry two ROCs, but no space for walking around in back, but you can mine with a friend. The Freelance MAX is easier in this respect. When using a Prospector or Mole, the base Freelance can carry two good loads of Quantainium, or three more normal loads. With nearly double the capacity, the MAX is even better in this respect. The Cutty Black? Use it to earn enough for a Freelancer.

    I like my Freelancer MAX because I have to run refinery jobs to TDD's. And the range and capacity, properly equipped, of the MAX is better than the Cutlass. Moreover the MAX can fit into small pads and hangars, the same as the Cutty. Finally, the Cutty has no other real entrance but the ramp, and as I had a unwelcome guest in my MAX using the ramp. I now use only the ladder for entry to my ship on transport runs. The Cutty tips really easily in heavy winds, as I discovered on my maiden ROC mining excursion. Now, I only use a Nomad for ROC mining, the anti-grav landing gear stays put even in heavy winds.

    Unfortunately, a ship thief can place a box next to the Cutlass side doors, hop up, and clip through them as though they are not even there. So I value the Freelancer because its doors are properly impassable, and the entrance near the cockpit closes itself up when I exit. Having a second shield generator and gimballed size 3 guns is also nothing to sneeze at. And the extra SCU space actually comes in handy for moving refined quantanium (or RMC if you're assisting with salvage). It's a shame about the Lancer's mail slot cockpit view and its gunner's range of movement, though. And its agility in atmosphere is pretty mid.

    If you can drive reasonably well, you can put 2 ROC's in a standard freelancer. You need good steering and speed control because it barely fits between the hydraulic cylinders for the ramp and your tires will have to drive over the little diagonal at the bottom of the door, but it fits. The front one has to go in facing forward while the rear one has to go in facing backward. There's no way to get past them so after loading the rear one, you have to close the ramp from the outside and use the side entrance to get to the cockpit. (or you can just stay in the ROC seat till your buddy lands the ship and opens the ramp from the cockpit) The trick is to make sure you're centered on the ramp and go slow which is easy to do with a stick or a controller and very hard to do with a keyboard. That said, while ROC's do fit in a Freelancer, it's much easier with the Max.

You didn't mention the freelancer has double the shields or show their turning rates. The statistic that tells you how agile they are would be a very big deal. We know a good bit about how the Apollo ships are going to be laid out regarding their medbeds, but their drone capabilities are truly in the air for now. I'll give it some more thought and consider if I can bring some value to that discussion :) thanks for the idea!

    The Freelancer's guns are gimballed because the whole side section rotates up and down right? There's no varipucks to take off to upsize your guns like on the Avenger? I'm looking to upgrade from the Titan and wanted something that could store some vehicles, at least a Dragonfly but I'd rather a Fury, but also be able to output tons of damage. I'm starting to get to the point where the TTK on stuff like Valkyries in PVE in my Titan is unreasonable, and I don't want to necessarily get in hour long fights with Hammerheads, even if it's possible to kill them in a Titan. Everything points to the Cutty Black, and knowing it has 6 missile racks is insane, but I would like something with at least some S4 firepower.

    Off the bat, are you looking to purchase in game with AUEC? Personally I think cutty black and freelancer Max are the no Brainers but between those two I can come down to preference. I personally enjoy the Cutlass Black's low claim time and how fast it is to get in and out of! Of course, you get much much more cargo in the MAX. If this is largely for PvE and it's with aUEC I'd definitely recommend saving up for a connie of some sort! The taurus is unbeatable for solo players

    @@Space-Tech I was thinking of upgrading my Titan pledge, both the regular Lancer and Cutty Black are $50 more than my warbond which ain't bad. I tend to check in on SC every 6 months or so for a week or two, so I don't really ever grind ships. I'd just like to have something I can fly on my own that would also be fun if a buddy wanted to try free fly, and can fit a vehicle in the back. The Titan's pretty much perfect for me as is but it gets really boring to just dick around in the empty cargo hold if you're trying free fly.

    Ahhh, then I think you'd have the best bang for buck with the Cutty Black! Has a coolness to it as well :) You can fit almost any vehicle outside the very largest in the back of it. That being said, both this and the freelancer can be rented for very very cheap in game so you can rent both and see which one you prefer! If you click the "try free fly" button during the current free fly you'll get access to a cutty red, and a freelancer so you'll know how they fly :)

    Just checked, Freelancer upgrade is also 10 dollars off right now! Plus you get some armor and a tractor beam if you use the warbond CCU to save you those 10 bucks :)
