I thought this was a very good video, I found the timers counting DOWN from 1 minute instead of UP from 0 seconds a bit confusing though

Really liked the actual hands-on comparison in everyday use, not just spreadsheet checks! Thx for the Vid.

Great vid, I appreciate you taking time to point out the top speeds and acceleration. :) Just noting that a few months after this vid, the Freelancer now has 3x S2 Shields, and 2x S2 Powerplants. It's still nowhere near the speed and agility of a Cutlass, but with more shields and power for those shields, it's gotten much tankier.

I love the Freelancer Max, although like yourself Ive upgraded to a Galaxy. Hear me out, to hold friends on the Freelancer is to load up the cockpit with 4 people and the beds with 4 people and then the turret :) I spent many hours on the Max and I always would say that CIG said its the largest ship to go through the smallest quantum points. The Max can hold an impressive amount. I would always say to my friends that the gimbled size 3 guns on the Freelancer was a huge upside. However now CIG is changing all guns can gimble while not losing a size. They both need gold pass, badly. However I understand the need for master mode to come first. This video is needed and I feel like people need to look harder at some of the freelancer's versions. The Max is my favourite however I believe with gold pass all of the ships will look and act like their visions. If they don't we have time to say as a community we would like something looked at. CIG really is a great company. Money hungry like every other company and they have not kept promises on things like the modular Vanguard (grrr). However since I started backing in 2017 the game has went in a positive direction and the community is for the most part very welcoming.

I like this video format quite a lot. Highlighting the meaningful differences between similar ships without bashing on either. Good fun.

Whilst I appreciate the comparison, I think you should consider instead of ramp to cockpit, it should be fastest time to cockpit. This is due to the Freelancer having a side door, and therefore a lot faster to get to the pilot seat than in your comparison.

Great comparison!! Its the best I have seen on youtube. I love them both. Its a hard decision for me.

I have the Cutty Black and the Freelancer Max. Cutty is like a Swiss Army Knife. Max is a 1930's Art Deco, Buck Rogers style ship that is more a cargo ship that can match the Cutty w/ground vehicles (Cyclones too), but is slightly heavier on the controls. Love them both.

I love the black, but it’s a raider, not having the bathroom, food processing , or extra 2 beds. The freelancer is the better explorer, allowing 2 extra crewmen as well as the ability to sustain the crew longer. I know the game doesn’t have mechanics to make these things matter right now, but if your paying real money for a ship, that’s how I’d look at them. Do you want the raider or the explorer? Also, I love ship comparison videos so kudos!

I wont even spend credits on a cutlass because of its massive vulnerability. Pretty much any ship can take it out by popping one of the oversized (read: easy to hit) engines with a single pass of ballistics. Why bother with soft death, let alone hard death, when you can defeat it with a one engine spin cycle...

In my opinion, the freelancer should bunk three max, but two makes more sense for its size. One pilot, one gunner. MIS could bunk three, with an extra for a missile operator. It would clear up space for more internals rather than a mostly redundant crew member.

I hate that there is so much wasted space in the "habitation" section of the cutlass black -.- but on the other hand, the freelancer really needs some rework as well imo

I want to like the Freelancer, in particular the MIS variant but the cockpit design absolutely kills it for me. The view from the cockpit is woeful and the rear dorsal turret is questionable in terms of effectiveness due to its placement. If they rework the cockpit then there's a good chance I'd swap to the MIS but my Cutty offers so much more in relation to what I do. The ability to have six passengers in the jump seats along with a fully crewed combat Cyclone are tough to beat but then that's the difference between these two ships. Hopefully once the Freelancer receives a re-work we see a version of the MIS that offers a more militaristic experience in line with its description.

Freelancer is nice, reminds me of more of if Fallout came to space for some reason for all misc ships. But def the Drake Cutlass over the Freelancer IMO. Rolled for a day doing bunkers with an org mate in his. Fell in love with it after he convinced me to take it for a spin.

I joined in with the freelancer pack during the kickstarter, but know it's needed a rework for years now. One point you didn't mention or I didn't hear was the cockpit view. You would figure for how closed in and tight the interior the freelancer has, that it's armor rating might be higher, but no just the shields. The strangely cramped living area and odd four seat cabin, just seem off to me know for the freelance, and why isn't the turret remote operated by one of those 3 extra seats? vehicle carrying is similar as you said, but man it's a tight fit in the lancer... You'll either not be able to exit the back after parking a vehicle or worry about blowing it up due the cramped nature on all sides. No looking above at all my gripes I've still never full on bought and kept a Cutty just because how squishy they feel! I hate getting in a small engagement and loosing one of my landing arms that also had one of my guns! Having the larger gimbled guns on the Lancer really felt like a win, along with going with larger physical weapons if need be. The Cutty's variants are cool but don't provide any tankier versions, and strangely the Steel is just a cardboard gunboat with a blinged out price-tag with less armor than the other variants. I know I went on a tangent but honestly both ships got their positives, and I've enjoyed flying both! Still praying for that Lancer interior remodel which will probably drop right after BMM arrives 🥲

YES, they should both have remote turrets, which lets the co-pilot fire missiles at targets outside the pilot’s view, even behind the ship (like the Corsair). Hopefully there will be a future option for blade-operated turrets too, which makes a lot of sense for this type of ship. Having a remote turret on the Cutty would also save space that could be used for a bathroom.

The freelancer was designed way back when CIG thought one of the largest ships that would be in the game was the Constellation. That's why a lot of these older ships have a high crew count and some weird features. Really waiting for them to be rebalanced and brought in line with current standards.

freelancer: civilian truck, you transport small amounts from A to B cutlass: military surplus truck, you do whatever the F!

The freelancer currently sits at 30% more expensive than the cutty, but has 3x the shields. I wonder which would do better for combat compared?

They are both useful, medium-sized ships. I prefer (and own) the fatmax! Although to be honest, it hasn't seen much use. These days i'm usually in a C2 or Constellation Taurus.

I started with an Aurora, willing to build my way up, but to be honest, the lack of any space soon becomes a burden (sure you can put 3scu containers below, but they vanish all the time...) Should I upgrade to a Titan or directly to a Cutlass?

Great video. I would have picked the Cutlass Black, until I discovered the Freelancer Max. Today, I would take the Freelancer Max over the Cutlass.

love the freelancer -always seem to lose my engine in the cutlass and end up spiralling to my death - freelancer i find more forgiving

I have both these ships. For a long time the freelancer was my daily driver for cargo hauling and general use. I've since switched to the connie taurus which is really just the freelancer made bigger in terms of usage. But the cutty is what I use whenever I plan to get into shenanigans. And I found a yellow bucket at on of the derelict sites that I put in the crew area to solve the no bathroom problem.

I am a freelancer fan. One thing that fails to get mentioned is how fast the Cutlass falls apart in a fight. Those two fins and the engines pop right off but you only need to lose one engine and the fight is over. The freelancer’s lower profile can be used to many advantages.

Cutty black has the tractor beam turret too.

The tractor beam might as well not be there. Nothing much you can do with it in the current position compared to the C1's tractor beam, hopefully they can move it or lower it somehow to make it more viable.

I prefer the MSR. 😋

For me Freelancer suits my none combat space trucker play style. But both of them badly need rework or upgrade. So I got myself a Taurus.

I think the Cutlass Black is much better for general use, if the job is just hauling cargo the freelancer wins obviously for the superior flight time and fuel scooping and having more cargo. All other stats the Cutlass Black is superior. And... at just 15$ more the C1 is a no Brainer if you want a more modern and better looking ship, with the ability to carry 2x 32SCU crates, and at least 3 ROC miners... more fuel, better hidrogen scooping, a functional tractor beam (cutlass black have a useless one) that can pull in and out the crates without leaving the cockpit (copilot chair). For combat out of the 3 id say the Cutlass Black is superior as well.

Agreed! Once this video has been out for a bit I’ll crown which ship looks to be the “winner” and put it against the C1.

I'm a Cutlass fan. I think comparing the stock is not really fair. I'm not sure how they decide what to put on each ship as "stock", but I'm pretty sure monkeys are involved. As far as I can tell, ballistics have _always_ been niche. Additionally, the Cutlass is really too nimble to be leaving the gimbals on, so that's 4 S3's you're going to put on it anyway. Especially with the changes right around the corner. With the Freelancer, you are stuck with them.

That's why this comparison is useless. It should have been a Freelancer MIS. I never understood these comparison videos when the channels only use the basic variant. It's just lazy.

so you're just not gonna mention that the front cargo area of the freelancer is inaccessible for manual loading and completely useless? lol

At the time of this video manual loading was still a bit out. I will make new videos comparing these things as time comes and the updates are out.

If you are going to compair ships you need to do it properly. Cutty Black is a combat ship. But you used a regular Freelancer....that should have been the MIS varient. Price should not be a consideration...this is a useless comparison, fail.
