Well....Ferrell probably didn't write the sketch...as he was NOT a writer on th show. There are "writers" who get paid to write. Yes, they often work "with" CMs to flesh out a sketch and customize it to that performer. But it's highly unlikely that Will wrote the sketch.

I like Fallon, but in this instance he broke when nothing was happening. Nothing funny had happened and he couldn't hold it for one line. I'm not a Fallon hater, I used to watch his late night show when I still watched normal tv. But damn. That was one of the worst breaks I've seen.

Will Ferrell rarely broke character while others around him were rolling with laughter, shows how good of a comedian and actor he is. That other comedians could barely hold it together while he was performing.

You realize the Extras are NOT laughing because this is their ONE time to shine on TV. Shout-out to the Extras for an impressive non laughing performance.

The best thing about this sketch is just how much everyone is laughing the entire time, it’s too contagious to not laugh too.

@@user-ts3lq8hv8t Nah, this never made it to air. It's a rehearsal of a sketch that got cut from it's respective episode. It's from the SNL Best of Will Ferrell DVD, which was a bestselling DVD that nearly everyone seemed to have back in the early 2000's. This is most likely where you guys saw it. On the DVD it's even preceded by text explaining that it was cut after rehearsal.

When Will Ferrell said "I'd be more worried about coyotes if I were you!", I broke into tears of laughter😂 My parents were wondering what I was laughing about that day and as I was trying to explain, I could barley get through a sentence because of how hard I was laughing. I literally fell to the floor. My dad was laughing at the fact that I couldn't finish. When I showed them this, my mom just stared at me confused and said "This is what you were laughing about?"

You basically just explained my entire experience with humor.

2:10 this gives me the vibe when your at school and there is a kid trying to be funny and everybody is laughing when they are not supposed to, and the kid that’s trying to be funny knows it.

It's crazy seeing Seth Myers, Tracy Morgan, and Jimmy Fallon so young!! It's so awesome!!!!

My favourite part is Tracy breaking and Fallon trying to calm him down. You know you've gone too far when Jimmy Fallon is trying to keep you in character.

I saw it as, Tracy Morgan is supposed to seem threatening when he says that, in which case him needing to be calmed down makes sense, but since he was laughing it just looked like Jimmy Fallon was playing around and drawing needless attention to himself.

Actually SEVEN CMs....Jocko and Jenkins are played by Dean Edwards and Jeff Richards, respectively. Sadly, this sketch mirrors their SNL careers quite well...no memorable characters or moments. (Richards' "Drunk Girl" maybe comes close....)

I was there for this. I was there all week and they could never get though it without everyone breaking - and Ferrell improvised all the outtros, eg, "peaches" - my fav that was in an earlier rehearsal was, "shoelaces and handgrenades" the best.

Gotta say, really love Chris Kattan in straight roles like this one. He is awesome. Very believable delivery. Check out 0:27 where he holds his side-eye on the Old Prospector for at least two long seconds. Perfect! No line was even needed, just a little shake of the head. His timing is impeccable. The writing, acting, and concept on this sketch are just perfect. Why can't we have more??? Of course, there's the breaking, but that doesn't kill the sketch.

To this day I still shout OOOOOH PEACHES at people...and they still have no idea what I’m talking about.

This sketch proves Will Farrel is one of the best sketch actors ever

I think Will's goal on stage wasn't to make the audience laugh but to make everyone break character.

I would watch a whole series with will ferrel as the old prospect. That voice is hilarious

The look Chris gave when Will was rattling the pots before he was about to speak. 😂😂

Anchorman, Elf, Step Brothers… they are all just lead-ups to a Gus Chiggins Old Prospector movie.

Kattan started losing it after the first "Oh, Peaches!" - I miss Will Ferrell on a weekly basis

I remember seeing this sketch on the 'Best Of Will Ferrell' DVD, and absolutely loving it. It's such an absurd premise, and I love everyone's reactions. From Kattan's smirk, to Ferrell's cheeky smile and acting, to everyone else's faces, as they break...I am so glad this was made public!

This shows how great Will is, this has to be the worst idea for a sketch and Ferrell saves it.

@@herculesbrofister265 I've seen way worse sketches than David S. Pumpkins, which on paper is a cute sketch about a spooky-themed amusement park ride with a confusingly muddled format. Way worse sketches are Ferrell as a doctor seeing Molly Shannon & Chris Parnell as a couple with a baby, which is a sketch of arch non sequitors the writers must've written out of boredom. Also, Chris Elliott as a family man who gets the teenage babysitter (Mark McKinney) drunk and takes advantage of her. And Kenan Thompson as a high school student who keeps being good-naturedly pushed out of his wheelchair, which ends up magically being sort of funny because Kenan's performance makes it funny even though it's completely unfunny, cruel, and repetitive on paper.

I like the anachronistic Vietnam War era Army uniforms to go along with the 19th century prospector.

The fact that literally everyone was totally losing it made it even more hilarious.

I'm a tough crowd for comedy but whenever I come back to this video it has me in tears that remind me of when I was getting into comedy in my tweens/early teens. Even though the sketch has little structure, this is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. The concept and Will Ferrell together are just perfect, and the corpsing pushes the hilarity over the edge. Had a shit week and my now wiping tears from my cheek - thanks Old Prospector video.

Did you watch the cowbell skit with will feral snl video? It's funny as hell watch it then watch the late night show with will feral and red hot Chilli Pepers "more cow bell" i think. Also the short shorts work meeting skit with will feral u will laugh your azz off 😆 🤣

Totally agree, Hound! Not every sketch needs to be setup/joke...setup/joke....catchphrase. SNL has always been a bastion of absurdity from literally the first moment it aired in 1975... As for the breaking part....well, that's sometimes what happens when really funny guys get together. And Horatio Sanz...

"What is that, prospector humor?!". That might be the best line in the skit hahahaha.

He looks absolutely nothing like Yosemite Sam. Yes, both characters have a large, 19th century style hat and beard, assuming you can even call Sam's large, red, handlebar mustache a beard, and they even talk with funny accents (which are nothing alike, either,) but that is where the similarity ends. That's like saying every cowboy with a beard and hat looks like Sam.
