Meet Benjamin (Ben) Somerville, a graduate of APC's HLT51020 - Diploma of Emergency Health Care.
A mature-aged student himself, Ben wasn't sure if studying was something he should pursue. He'd worked in the same industry for 20 years and was concerned that he didn't have the time to place aside for full-time work and university so he decided to look into APC's courses. Now a graduate, he believes that APC's Diploma gave him a great grounding in the industry and is ready to take his career to the next step at university, studying a Bachelor of Paramedicine.
In Ben's words, "I think the course was really well set out, easy to follow. The online study was good with the theory then doing the workshops and taking it out into the real world, it really came together nicely so I'm certainly glad I took that step."
Ben was fortunate to complete his Clinical Placement through two host organisations, one of which was PhysioMedic which he has since gained employment with since graduation and is continuing to progress his career.
Ben shares in the video, "I had two opportunities, one was through a company called PhysioMedic and he gave me exposure to a bunch of different areas, things like rugby tournaments, equestrian events and doing some standby medic work there...I'm continuing that on in the medic capacity which is great."
After graduating, Ben was nominated by APC as "Vocational Student of the Year" at the Victorian Training Awards where he came in as a finalist with his story and efforts being recognised for taking the leap and not letting concerns hold him back from reaching his fullest potential.
