Traxxas hit it WAAaaaayyyYY out the park with this Defender! This is the most scale and functional production RC I've ever seen and I've been into RC since '84 (the Tamiya Rough Rider).

Sweet. I wanted a dark tangerine but could find what I wanted. So I took blaze red and competition orange and quickly layered the coats while not completely dry. Then sprayed the roof and inner coat with jet black. I got my tangerine color I was looking for with a black roof. Looks very nice.

Wow...WINDOW MASKS!!! I gotta say, I'm super new to this and the more I see from Traxxas, the more blown away I am!!

I got window masks on my very first clear body, back in the 90`s.. All kinds of bodies come with masking, you can also get different masking sets, so you can put patterns etc on them ,like flames, or numbers etc. If you`re looking to spray some bodies, might wanna look into what you can actually get for the body/bodies you want to spray ;) Oh, and plan it out, as well as testing the paint on some spare lexan, so you know when it`s safe to take the masking off etc :)

That color green with the white roof and CLEAR windows, that's a masterpiece. Traxxas should have done that. Although I am happy my Bronco came with the front windows clear. It would have been nice to have all of them.

Dang that thing is sharp! I bought the Tactical version and just waiting for this weather to get better so I can take it out and see what I can do. It's my first crawler and I'm looking forward to seeing what crawling is all about. Seeing the Defender that you did does make me want one of those too. Maybe I'll have to get a body like you did and do the same thing, aside from the color, although it looks very nice. Or I could just get a Defender and a Bronco too.

Hell yeah, nice they did that for you. They wouldn't even replace my shock for me (noticed it had leaked oil out upon arrival so I refilled it thinking no big deal) well after running it through water a couple times I got water inside my shock and it was sticking real bad. Called warranty and they said since it wasn't straight out of the box nothing they could do. So now I gotta spend $40 on two shocks and I have only owned the truck for 4 months.

I have a proline f250 body with a utility bed on mine. I cant wait to get that new trx4 bronco

When I put my light kit in and cleaned my TRX-4, I left the bumpers, fender flairs, wheel wells and the things on the back of the body off. It has about a 60 degree angle on front and back now, with more then a pound off it too, looks sick and will perform better.

Grab yourself a black Posca paint pen and just draw around the windows with that. It'll dry matt so looks like the rubber trim :)

i spray my lexan bodies on the outside with vallejo primmer first then the colour i want thent i flat coat it to finish after i have done the decals works every time and looks fantastic doesnt peel either then i spray aluminum in side followed by black so when i scratch the body it come throu looks really good

You don’t need a “blocker” ,whatever that is,if you painted it correctly and did dark colors first. Eitherway tho,this is by far the best looking Trx-4 body I’ve seen.

I used the original stickers on the inside of a different traxxas shell and pealed them off afterwords. Could have used the Exacto knife on your stickers to cut out the edge you wanted and then when you stuck it to the inside of the body and put down your paints you could have just pealed off the outer part of your sticker and paint that black and you would have that black line effect you wanted. I am always looking for better ideas on how to make bodies come out sweet. Your end result looked good in the end. :P

Least favorite part of tha defender is definitely the windows, the bronco looks much better imo

Great video, thank you. In your experience with painting have you used PS-9 green? I’ll be painting a Mercedes G500 and want the darkest green Tamiya makes. From what I can see PS-9 is darker than PS-22 racing green. Thanks for your help.

Just a quick question when you spayed the gold on did you do it while the white was still wet or after the white has dried just asking as I get the feeling if the white was dry then the gold would not have a tinting effect Thank you. PS wish Traxxas would send me a spare clear body to paint up. By the way your defender looks great

Sometimes when you warm the paint if can make the paint run more easily

There are many aftermarket interior kits for the defender trx4. Would have liked to see that used here.

I have questions!! Do you paint the exterior of the body?? Seems like the paint should go inside, shouldn't it?? And, how long does the paint have to dry to properly cure? If the outside is painted I would worry about scratches from rollovers. I would want to do a military green version with the black roof and hood bulge (like the orange version) but it's looking like more work than I want to put into it.

Very cool. Good insight as to what goes into one of these custom painted bodies. What sort of options are there if you want to give the windows a tinted look?

What you've done is awesome. I'm in awe right now but, the clear windows with no interior kit for a finished or realistic look seems kind of silly. I would invest in one of those interior kits. Your rig will look amazing with it.

Where did you get the parts for the body from?

so you painted the roof outside and the rest of the body inside?

Is there a way to make it not look so glossy?

With all those goodies, I bet that body costs $150 - $200. I wonder if going to a Hard Body at that point would be better.

Very disappointing that traxxas couldn't find a way of using the same body clip-on system as they used on the new bronco. The Post and Pin system is old hat now!!!

Hey Tim, You can certainly transfer your RTR Defender body accessories to the clear Defender body. I know Harley and SBG, we talk from time to time. They're very knowledgable and I highly reccomend their channels. I haven't been invited on the show, however I'd probably have to decline. I have such bad internet service that I can't stream where I am. Maybe someday.

Looks incomplete without an interior. If your not doing an interior, you should stick to your original body with black windows.

The way traxxas have treated the rc sailors is appalling!!!!

I clicked on this video thinking I would see someone painting a RC crawler body. NOPE. It's like Martha Stuart dressing a turkey and 3min later pulling a fully cooked turkey out of an oven. Suuuuuuuuper. Thanks for nothing. There was some good info in there though.
