Mechanic's full story for clip at 8:50: The owners son was apparently using the car the night before. While downtown the son had gotten a little rowdy and tipsy, an argument turned to a fight which turned to a car chase. He was being chased and ran right through an elevated roundabout without ever looking back. The next morning, the owner of the vehicle went to use their car and noticed the oil light was on and the engine seemed a bit louder, after checking the dipstick and seeing no oil at all, they poured a quart of oil in the engine and closed the hood. They restarted the car and drove almost seven miles to our dealer where I put it on the hoist

I mean they can run for a VERY long time without an oil change, but the drawbacks are decreased engine efficiency and possible wear down due to foreign particles getting in, which in turn leads to major engine damage. It also makes it very difficult to change and recycle the oil when it has been in use for too long. As long as the oil is doing its primary function of lubricating, then it'll last quite a while.

I drove it 12 miles to my mechanic in Huntington Beach, he quoted me 3200 for a new engine install, I said no and then drove it 12 miles back to Anaheim to sell it to Pick Your Part because they said they'd pay me 450 if it drove on its own power. People today think the only thing you need to do in order to drive a car is put the key in and step on the gas pedal. A class on how to jack a car up, how to look under the car and how to change the oil and filter. I find it is a game changer to buy a whole case of oil filters at one time. If the first oil filter fits then the other 11 will fit. You will be amazed how many times I've bought oil filters or other parts from auto parts sores/NAPA to find out they don't fit and belong to a completely different car.

5:32 For one, always keep a fire extinguisher in your car. Not something we want to use but it is a necessity. Obviously at this point the fire may be too big but 1) it doesn’t hurt to try with the extinguisher anyway 2) you can prevent it from getting this big in the first place 3) after you use a fire extinguisher or after it is 10 years old have the extinguisher recharged or replaced, based on the discretion of a licensed fire marshal 4) have your extinguisher inspected every 1-10 years, you don’t want to find out during a fire that it doesn’t work 5) it should be easily accessible during a fire where you have few seconds or less to unstrap and grab or whatever and useable by a non-trained person but you should train others regardless 6) it should be in enough quantity or big enough to put out a fire 7) optional but still recommended: you may even want to practice using some in a drill. Go to your fire pit and pour some gasoline on it. Light it on fire and have someone else (if other person is present) set a stopwatch and possibly video it. See how efficiently you can take the extinguisher out, yell for others to evacuate (do this drill once a week, fortnight, or month because too long you may forget and too often may cause neighbor annoyance, if you don’t have neighbors then do this as much as you want) and put the fire out. How many extinguishers did it take? And even if you don’t do the stopwatch and video to review your mistakes, the practice will do you good in the future. And remember that in the real event you will call FD but not in practice.

My first car was a Saturn ION. The frame was incredibly rusted, to the point where the support mount for the exhaust just pulled off the frame. When my brother, who's a mechanic, tried to weld it back to the frame, he had trouble finding actual metal to weld to. After grinding off the rust, there was a paper thin amount of clean metal. On the lowest setting, my brother's welder would just blow a hole through what was left of the frame. I ended up changing car as soon as I could. I puckered every time I went over a nasty bump, afraid the frame would just fold on itself. Coupled with the fact that the model had poor safety ratings, I'd have certainly died if I got in an accident. The motor still ran really great though. The car I replaced it for didn't have much rust, but the motor had a few issues. Just the opposite of the first one.

Hydraulic oil gets shiny when something is wrong. Some customers will say, "thats break in." I have an 89 Grand Marquis (same thing; 100% parts interchangable) that seized from lack of oil when I shut it off immediately after I bought it. All I had to do was add oil and flush it a couple times, and it's been running fine for 7 years. Just has a lifter tick. I discovered that the oil had not been changed in, yes, ten years. It still ran like garbage until I flushed it twice. Then I had so much more power than I was used to that I ended up drifting sideways through an intersection later that day. 302 doesn't mess around. Still have it. Every time something goes out, I replace it with something better. It'll be getting a new transmission (because that's fried too; first and second gear no longer exist) and driveshaft once the weather is decent enough for me to do it. Still starts on the first crank. I have a '99 Explorer wreck that I plan on swapping the entire powertrain from some day, and many other things. I had a neighbor once who proudly showed me the custom bodywork on his 70 Camaro. It was similar to the work shown on this truck, only on all four fenders. He had built “fender flares” that stuck out about four inches. It wasn’t smoothed out or anything. I don’t know if there was any kind of structure under the bondo or not. “I did the bodywork myself” he announced proudly. I wonder how long it was before all this custom bodywork started falling off. 🤔 Oh well, at least it wasn’t a 69 Camaro. I wish I had pictures but this was years ago, before everyone had cell phones with cameras.
