Hey alarm network earthquake today 4:00 pm
If this quake happened, where would the epicentre be?
@dentonkaya6630
2 жыл бұрын
Where the entire rupture begins. So in this scenario, the epicenter would be off the coast of Mindanao. But the event would rupture Northward as shown here over a prolonged period. With megathrust earthquakes in subduction zones, the initial rupture is just the beginning. These events can rupture rock over an area that may be over 100 miles wide and 300+ miles long. For example, during the 1960 Valdivia earthquake (M9.5) in South-Central Chile, the most powerful ever recorded, the megathrust that ruptured was some 120 miles wide and up to 600 miles long! The rupture of that earthquake began in the North near Valdivia before quickly propagating Southward toward Chloé Island where it finally stopped. Took nearly 5 minutes to rupture that entire fault zone! That is why these quakes last so long and gain such a high magnitude, because they release enormous amounts of energy over an extended period of time.

@@dentonkaya6630 is there great amount of stress already beneath the Philippine Trench waiting to be relieved? i live in Southern Leyte and there is information circulating about The Bigger One Earthquake happening either on the Philippine Trench or in the Leyte Fault System. please enlighten me. this video makes me emotionally exhausted already🤦♂️ and is the scenario on the video really possible? meaning the whole Phil.Trench will crumble one day? this video is so disturbing and horrifying 🙏
@dentonkaya6630

@@elydu30 having such an earthquake is always possible. Anywhere on earth that has such a fault system is at risk of having such a quake. I'm not an official scientist qualified in the field, but I know from experience from monitoring quakes around the world that such scenarios where ever you have a subduction zone is always a possibility. The Philippine Trench has never had a magnitude-9.0+ quake in recorded history, but the possibility cannot be ruled out. Scientists initially thought the Sumatra-Andaman subduction zone could never produce a gigantic earthquake. Then came December 26th, 2004 when the 9.1-magnitude earthquake ruptured that whole zone. Many scientists also thought Eastern Japan could never have an earthquake larger than 8.5 prior to 2011. And we all saw what happened there. So yes, the Philippines could have such an earthquake either in the Philippine Trench in the East or the Manila Trench off Western Luzon. The fault system that stretches through Leyte would produce much smaller, but still dangerously high magnitude quakes. The difference there is the inland fault systems produce strike-slip type of ruptures where one side of the fault moves suddenly horizontal with respect to the other. Because of this, these faults generally produce quakes no larger than magnitude 8. But they produce quakes shallower (closer to the surface) and closer to inhabited areas since there on land. This differs from subduction zone quakes that generally occur deeper inside the earth and out to sea below the trenches. The Philippines as a whole is very seismically active due to it's geological setting sitting on the border between tectonic plates in-addition to have thousands of active faults scattered throughout the archipelago due to the collison between the plates. So with that knowledge in mind, it's best not to be scared, but be prepared. Earthquakes and tsunamis are a natural hazard, but not a disaster unless you let it become one by being unprepared. This us where knowledge comes into play. Things like understanding that if you are in a coastal area and you feel a strong, long-lasting earthquake, see the ocean suddenly recede or begin surging upwards and/or hear a thunderous sounds coming from the ocean; run for the hills as tsunami waves may or will start rolling across the coastline. So my advice is always "don't be scared, be prepared."
