Seismic waves travel up the subducting plate better than through the mantle, so shaking is strongest where the 2 plates meet, near the trench.

That's kinda debatable. Although 10.3 is very strong, even at low levels, a deep 10.3 may cause much longer shaking than a 9.5 earthquake, even when it's that deep. Also, if the 10.3 deep earthquake happened close to shore, or in the ocean, the tsunami heights could be close to the Great Chilean Earthquake (Commonly known as the 1960 Valdivia Earthquake). Also, it's worth noting that the Great Chilean Earthquake shook the earth for 10 minutes, at MMI scales of XII. A much longer shaking, but the intensity was IX could be even more devastating.

if the shaking is intense IX but lasts 10+ minutes, it's the same as X-XII earthquake lasting ~30 seconds
