Currywurst Sauce - Authentic German Street Food
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Currywurst ist one of the most popular German street foods. The birth of the currywurst took place only a few years after the second World War. According to the "Welt der Wunder", the snack stand owner Herta Heuwer reported that it was a rainy day when she mixed the first curry sauce on September 4th, 1949, clearly out of boredom. She wanted to spice up her post war meal, so she traded some German alcoholic beverages to the English for some curry powder. The ingredients were reputed to be peppers, ground pepper, tomato puree, and different spices - she then poured the signature creation over a boiled and cut into pieces sausage. The combination of chili and ketchup was patented as “Chillup” shortly thereafter.

Thanks for sharing this recipe. 👌 I was visiting a friend in Cologne while on holiday back in 2014. And he took me to a place to try it....wow that was so good. I was thinking about it the other day and google search led me to this KZread video. So I made the sauce served with bratwurst and fries. So yummy 😋 Thankyou 👍 all the way from 🇦🇺

I've never had currywurst but thought it looked delicious and I would make it eventually. Well, I tried this recipe today and it was so good! Definitely a sauce that I would keep on hand😁😋

Wow! Thanks for posting. I did a version of this for my significant other, who lived in Germany a few years. Although, I did it a little unconventionally as a crockpot version.

So this is just sausage cooked in a gravy of curry. As an Indian, this looks quite easy for me to prepare even though I don't cook much.

I use regular curry powder that you can get from the supermarket. I have some curry powder from McCormick and some that I bought at an Indian grocery store. To be honest, I am not tasting much of a difference.

I don't think they had soy sauce in Berlin in 1949. But, it still looks good.

They probably used Maggi seasoning sauce in Berlin in 1949. Maggi is an international brand of seasonings, instant soups, and noodles that originated in Switzerland in 1886. Maggi seasoning sauce contains soy sauce.
Balsamic and honey? Soy sauce! I was gonna add that anyway! And I get to use an emersion blender?! I am sincerely excited to try making this recipe.

Ketchup must be different in Germany. No one could eat honey with ketchup and tomato paste. It would be too sweet.

These are small amounts, the sauce is not sweet. Ketchup tastes the same in Germany and the US. I used US ketchup

Depends, many german brands have a lower sugar count than Heinz ketchup. Per 100g: Heinz has 22.8g Born has 14.7g Zeisner has 29.9g Werder has 17g Altenburger has 14g

We lived in Berlin in the mid 70's. I wanted to know if this is the same type sauce used on Pommes Frites that was so good? I bought Zeisner Curry Ketchup on Amazon.com. It was pretty close. I'm going to try this. thanks!

I think you will like it, you can adjust the spices to your liking if it is different to the sauce you remember.
