The red currants were my favourite as a child, because of their sour taste. It was almost like sour candy to me. I hated the black currants as a child, probably for their savoury taste, but today i prefer the black ones. At least the ones my mom grows. Incredibly complex flavour and nice sweetness 👍 My mom used to make "saft" with a mix of the red and black currants ("cordial" or "squash" I believe is the english translation). It was the absolute best, and for a long time I hated commercial "saft" because it didn't taste like my moms 😄 She also made jam out of the red ones. Makes for an absolute awsome jam! 👍

In Denmark we call the black ones “solbær” directly translated “sunberry”. The red, green and black ones are commonly found in gardens. As many others, I grew up with these berries! My grandma and I used to pick them and make jam. Also in Denmark we are a big fan of non-carbonated fruit juice, that you thin out with water called saftevand (juice water) and I dare to say the black currant is the most popular choice to use for that. Great vids!

Like many berries, currants become less sour if you let them ripen until the end of summer. They are quite sweet in late august and early september. I would leave gooseberries in the bushes until they have a deep purple-ish color.

The pink (champagne) currants are the best. Very sweet and slightly tart when ripe. My mom grew all 4 currant colors, various cultivars of gooseberries, a few jostaberries and a slew of others in her kids berry garden when I was a kid. The right variety of gooseberries are also amazing. The wrong varieties are watery. We drank a lot of black currant juice in season. My dad liked them and once you got used to them straight they were addictive. The juice will turn your digestive tract black but kids don't care :). Then the season would end, lol. If you ever get a yard I recommend putting in a few bushes of the blacks in partial shade if you like them. Not enough people like them, and that is a shame-too good to go extinct on a hobby scale. They are also easy to grow and make a nice hedge when they take off.

Gooseberries are to this day my favourite berry, but the sight of redcurrants hanging amidst the green leaves like jewels is an enduring memory. It is curiosity nowdays, cuz prosecco, champange and rest of bubly family is so cheap today. Also, red currants were done as "snowballs" in X-mas time. You dip currants in eggwhite and then roll them in powderd sugar. And let them dry. This style of "x-mas candy" comes from russian cuisine, at tšars time.

My grandparents had currants growing on their south central Virginia farm and as a child they were my very favorite fruit on the entire farm. The currants on the farm were small, dark and sweet, not vegetal in the least. I've never found any currants that were comparable in flavor. The flavor that I recall was like a mix of the flavor of a delecious sweet ripe cherry with hints of a flavor that reminded me of the aroma of bayberry candles. I'm going to ask my Mom what she remembers about the currants later today. My grandmother had so many other fruits on the farm there was a huge orchard and grandmother made so many preserves, jams and jellies from the grapes, peaches, apples, cherries, pears etc. that she never used the currants for anything at all.. such a pity. As a child I was allowed to eat my fill, lucky me! Great childhood memories!

I am jealous; I would love to have some fresh black currants! Black currants have been banned in most of the USA for many years. The dried “currants” you get at the grocery store are actually champagne grapes (basically tiny raisins). Studies have shown the anthocyanins in black currants are beneficial for eye health. I hope they will be available everywhere soon, thanks to the USDA allowing them to be grown in certain States. You didn’t mention it, but I presume you were able to get them in NY since that is one of the States where they can be legally grown.

Gooseberries are best when super ripe, they develop a much more complex flavour and aroma. Even if they stay green, you have to wait till they’re soft on the bush. They don’t ripen off the bush. When firm-ish they are just sour and lack that complexity. They grow well in your climate, you should get a bush!

I have some in my yard. You have to wait till it is purple. But when I first grew it, the birds would eat it before I can get to it.

Black currants: Tasty but smell weird, like resin/tar. Red currants(small): sour and tart, taste idk like something blackberry, something pomegranate white red currants(small): pretty much the same Red currants(with hairs)- basically a gooseberry, but tarter and sourer Gooseberry: Tarter than black, but also sweeter at times. Taste is also lighter and less resinous. More towards a green apple.

When I was really young I used to go on nature trails with my grandma, while leaving, we saw a funky little bush, she stopped me and told me that they were gooseberries, so naturally we both picked a good few and took them home, I ate them with sugar and they were very good, 10/10

I have a European gooseberry/black currant hybrid growing in my allotment garden commonly known as jostaberry or "solstik" in Danish(which comes from the Danish names of the berries - respectively stikkelsbær and solbær; solstik literally means sunstroke). I find them to be far more delicious than the species that they originate from

Fun fact: gooseberries are currants, and readily hybridize with other currant species. Classifying and organizing Ribes is almost as messy as Citrus, what with all the hybrids and hybrids of hybrids out there.

What I always found most interesting about currants is that hard to describe extra taste of the seeds... With gooseberries I think the skin (whether with or without "hairs") is what adds a lot of complexity to the different cultivars.

Most of the ribes I've had are pretty tasty. I have a couple gooseberry bushes in the yard and 3 jostaberry bushes (blackcurrant / gooseberry hybrid that I'm really looking forward to trying). I want to add a few redcurrant (or pink / white) bushes as well. I've never had a raw black currant to know how they taste, but black currant jam is fantastic.
