CUMMINS Swapping the OBS Ford F350

Greetings everyone, welcome back to the Cummins 12 valve Ford build! In this episode I was able to knock out most of the major work related to mounting the drivetrain in the truck. The previous owner sold the truck as an already swapped truck, however, upon further investigation I realized that most of the work had been done very poorly and needed a lot more attention. The truck received new motor mounts, a custom transmission mount for the 47RE, killer dowel pin mod, general maintenance, new exhaust manifold from DPS, custom turbo oil lines, custom upper and lower radiator hoses, custom drive shaft work and several other modifications. More to come on this episode in the near future.
Specs on the truck (for those interested):
- 1992 Ford F350 Crew Cab, Long Bed
- 1990 VE-pump Cummins, 5.9L 12v Diesel Swap
- 47RE Transmission controlled by Firepunk Anteater, RWD
- 18" Wheels on 33's
Summary of work done in this video:
- motor pulled out of truck
- engine bay prepared for motor
- new motor mounts installed from CP Addicts
- motor re-installed
- custom drive shaft installed
- new exhaust manifold installed
- killer dowel pin mod
- custom oil feed line installed
- custom radiator hoses fabricated

Awesome Fummins build It's nice to have the Exhaust manifold for the turbo that hangs straight down just like the industrial 5.9 cummins did on their 2 ton or medium duty series trucks I enjoyed the video

I wonder if you could use a porta power with extensions to massage the firewall?

I had to do a lot more hammering to make clearance for the valve cover than the trans. I suppose it's worth a shot if you're gonna swap your truck.

About to do a similar swap, what exhaust manifold did you install? That would help me quite a bit. Thank you.

I used the DPS exhaust manifold for OBS conversion in order to clear the heater core for the A/C. I did a lot of research and you could also flip the original manifold upside down and have a top mount turbo if your manifold will allow you to. The 12v manifolds tend to shrink and the bolts don't line back up sometimes if they've shrunk. That's why I chose to buy a new one.

Just bought a 1994 school bus 109,000 miles on it with a 5.9 12v with p- pump , have a 93 idi f-350 4x4 zf5 trans, cab & chassis service truck I’m going to put the cummins in sometime next year, iv been told that I would have to move the radiator forward 2inches or move the transmission back 2 , which is the best or easier way ?

I used a 47rh transmission and ordered mounts from Carrick Customs (i think that's what they're called). Those mounts and that transmission required that I hammer on the fire wall in order to make clearance for the trans and rear valve cover of the motor. I recall that I had to drill new holes in the frame for the trans brace. So I guess I moved the trans back. Radiator is still in its stock location.

If I remember correctly I just had to fold the lip over inside the trans tunnel to clear the 47RE. I had to do quite a bit more with the sledgehammer higher on the firewall to be able to remove the rear valve cover once the motor was installed. I did it by trial, removing and replacing the motor a few times until I'd hammered enough for clearance.

Did you just run the fuel lines straight from the tank to the pump or do you have a fass or air dog?

  • @ChaneyOswell

    @ChaneyOswell

In it's current setup the lines go straight from the tank to an electric inline fuel pump and then to the ve-pump. I intend to pull the bed off in the future and completely redo the fuel system so that both tanks work and I can run an air separator.

8:51 why would you put freshly milled surfaces down onto asphalt?

  • @ChaneyOswell

I usually rub surfaces on 2 grit to scuff up the metal. Gives a better seal between the oil pan gasket and blinker fluid reservoir.

The style of mount that I bought required me to notch a portion in order for the studs on the motor mounts to have clearance for the nuts to hold them in place securely.
