Hoad Monument or Sir John Barrow Monument.
This is the first day of my visit to Cumbria and I arrive in Ulverston, find my accommodation, drop off my luggage and start to explore Ulverston Town Centre. I knew very little of Ulverston, which made it more exciting exploring the streets and seeing what was on offer. Ulverston was the birth place of Arthur Stanley Jefferson, better known as Stan Laurel, and that is apparent when you walk around Ulverston Town Centre. There are statues, places named after him, and figures dotted around the town streets.
I familiarise myself with the surrounding area, explore some interesting architecture, and spot Hoad Monument, commonly known now as Sir John Barrow Monument. I make the hike up through Ford Park and along the winding pathways up to the monument. The views from the monument area are breath-taking, seeing all the fells and pikes, the town of Ulverston, as well as Ulverston sands.
The hike up to the monument gave me time to plan what I was going to be filming over the few days that I was there. My trip starts in Ulverston, then to Maryport Aquarium, Haverthwaite Railway Station, Lakeside Railway Station, travelling on steam locomotives and Lake Windermere Cruise boats, before finishing in Barrow-in-Furness, birth place of the one and only Dave Myers (Hairy Bikes). Dave Day, a tribute to Dave Myers, was on the Saturday and featured hundreds of motorcyclists, which I sadly missed as I had returned home.
