Becareful my husband drives for a "plant company " they put out plant varieties that are NOT ready to be planted, like pumpkins in April in VA that is too early. Do your own research for your area. Buy the plants but check when your zone should plant them before doing so.

I'm in Florida too. Looking forward to learning about how to garden in my state .

I was very successful at vegetable gardening when I lived in zone 9 in Sonoma County, CA (approximately 45 mi north of San Francisco), which tends towards a drier heat. I’ve since moved to Houston, TX (also zone 9), but am having difficulty adapting my planting to the very hot and humid temperatures. It seems that once something starts to grow well… think tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers… along come the heavy, sometimes torrential, downpours, along with the accompanying pests. Any advice for saving my veggies from the elements and their after effects? FYI… I have very limited space and no covered patio. Any suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated.

The best for me is to buy chicken fertilizer in bags and to soil every year for tomatoes and cucumbers. Two bags per raised beds

Very nice video, lots of good info. I live in northern Nevada just outside of Reno. This year I decided to grow vertically with trellis and add cucumbers with tomatos and pole beans in same 3x5 box. All doing well but cucumbers still have only male flowers, lots. Am I just inpatient & need to wait a little longer?

Hi Mark. The male flowers first is normal. Hopefully you should see the females coming in soon. Since your dealing with a small area. Keep an eye out for pollinators. If you don’t see any (usually in the morning) I would hand pollinate to make sure you give the Cukes the best chance to grow. Let me know how it goes.

​@@bellesbackyard3264 I have basil keeping the horn worms at bay completely but my cukes are under attack from cucumber beetles and my zukes from borage worms. I can't really trap crop as my gardens are not conventional) I have dill w/the squashes and dill, chamomile, radish (left to go to seed, as suggested) all around cukes, none of which is helping. I am hand controlling them but Any other companion ideas? I have Marigolds all around the base of the cuke raised beds and but they are not deterring the beetles at all. I'm growing vertically so no scent of the flowers lofts up high to the upper leaves but they are on the lower leaves and blossoms as well so the marigolds aren't doing a thing to keep them away. I do use bt in the stalk of squash to kill the worms but have no idea what else deters the butterfly. I use castille soap avocado oil and baking soda spray to kill the cucumber beetles but it doesn't help prevent them as it doesn't last. I garden completely organic, even have a filter on my garden hose. I know this makes things more difficult but I'd rather surround with companions than spray. Searching for scents cuke beetles and borage bflys HATE - Thank you so much for your response. I understand it's a common problem but if you have any other suggestions I'd LOVE to give them a try.

Will Sugar Ann snap peas attract beneficial insects?

I get a lot of fruit but it only developes to between 1/2 and 1 in and is constricted in the middle

Im in Zone 6 in MA and we've had a gloomy, rainy spring and my cucumbers are drowning. I even layed a yard of stone for drainage, I'm hoping the rain stops. Never had this problem before.

you can drive a rebar into the ground then pull out the rebar leaving a hole in the ground to help the water run off.

Hi how to get rid of cucumber worms

Good morning I live in Iowa. I'm new to gardening. I planted 2 Sweet Success parthenocarpic cucumber plants. I've gotten 2 cucumbers off of them. But the rest are not growing. They started to grow, a few are 2 - 2.5" long, then they start to dry up. The plants themselves look really good! Any thoughts on why my fruits are not growing?

Hi I didn’t see anything on why my cucumber leaves are all light green. (I’m in south Florida, first time grower). I also keep on pruning the plant a lot so it does look a little skeleton like and not producing very much cucs)

a couple of things could cause that. Light cukes are mostly caused by an imbalance of nutrients. When fruiting they need a fertilizer with higher phosphorus than nitrogen. Like a 4-6-5. If it is producing flowers and want you want to go organic try this: agrothrive.com/?ref+5Eigyd-7X_K_8r Agrothrive is already predigested and can get to the plant quickly. You can get the small bottle to try. It will not be to expensive. As far as the production. High temps limit the production of the female flowers. Keep a good 2-3" of compost and try shading the plant. That will help bring the temps down. Hope this helps

When do you use coffee grounds and/or egg shells. I am growing tomatoes, green peppers, and cucumbers.

winter and or late summer. you want it to break down so it usable by the plant.

My cuke leaves are being skeletonized. What’s eating them? I see nothing. Now it’s happening to my pumpkin leaves. I kill a few adult squash bugs almost everyday on my plants. Also shake vines until bugs fall off and sometimes there are baby squash bugs but not many.

Beautiful cuke plants all male flowers no fruit.

The plant will usually throw male flowers for the first two weeks. If it has been longer than that you may want to do a simple soil test. The Nitrogen and Potassium levels. could be low. Good luck. Let me know what happens.

Hi! I’m a master gardener with flowers and shrubs but I’m fairly new to vegetable gardening. (3 years). Last year my cukes did fabulous but my tomatoes did not. This year my cukes are having problems (isn’t always something, right? ) The bases of the the stems of the cucumbers look woody and dry. Something is eating the blossoms right off. I see teeny tiny little black bugs. Also, the cukes that I have gotten are bitter as heck! Awful. My dog won’t even eat them. 🤣 Help.

Hey. How much water are they getting? Are the flowers falling off male? Are the little black bugs on the stem and under the leaves? The bitterness. Is it throughout the cuke or only at the base?

If you water cukes w/cold water they will be bitter. Use warm water from a can - Keep a bin, w/a lid , full of water in the sun that you keep for your watering can. Refill when you water and it will always be warm - damage sound likes cucumber beetles - same problem

I have the same problem as Tom. I heard another YTuber say that introducing flowers that attract bees/butterflies seems to help with pollinating. I'm going to try that next year. 'Cuz who has time to romance those female flowers?

Your local suppliers should have bags of wild flower seeds you can sow after first frost. Also look for spring sales of annuals to get a jump on attracting pollinators. This will allow them to start a route to visit your garden prior to the cuke blooms appearing. Let me know how it goes. Good luck!

@tom if you let the cucumber ripen on vine, it will kill the plant. once your fruit reaches 6 inchs pick it.

I have very few, if any, pollinators. I must manually pollinate my cucumbers. After pollinating and a few days, the cucumber starts growing and looking great. Then they just stop growing and start turning brown/drying out. I have been experiencing drought but I have actively been watering. The leaves are green and plump. There are a ton of blossoms both male and female. As of this writing I have not had a single cucumber. Oh yes, I grow a vining type and a bush type. Both have been experiencing the same problem. I am not aware of any virus in my area. Got any ideas?

Cutworms love cucumber plant bases. They are small gray/brown caterpillars. They usually feed at night so deep them can be difficult. Use a horticultural oil applied in the evening to help. Hope this helps!

We have a terrible oaper wasp problem every summer in our area. Is this preventing polinators visiting?

Try switching to a Beit Alpha, Envy, or Green light. They are a parthenocarpic cuke that doesn’t require pollinators. I have some people growing them in a screened in patio in Florida. Check your local garden centers and look at the description, it should mention it. Hope this helps. Let me know.

I live in California about 60 miles from Palm Springs! It is hot desert weather here. I have cucumbers that are perfectly shaped at the stem end, from the they taper down to a point and have a curve shape, Can you explain what is causing this to happen. Thank You very much.

Yes these are the first cucumbers coming off the plant. has been hit and miss with the bees. have not seen any bees after the storm went thru earlier this week. have flowers in area. Here is what I think. Readers Digest version. Low humidity cause incomplete fertilization of the cuke ovaries (not all seeds germinated) try misting the plants in the morning lightly. This will create a more humid environment and allow the pollen to travel down the stamen more effectively. This will help with the ones that still have the bloom on them. The others…Just enjoy a crooked cuke they are fine. I’m going to use this as an example if that is ok. Let me know how it works for you.

Have you ever used Sevin hose spray to kill over 500 insects. Because it seems to me, after I used it , started to kill my cucumber plants. Why? I was trouble with cucumber beetles and I think Lantern flies ?

If you're having issues with pollination grow Biet Alpha cucumbers. They are self pollinating. I grow them every year now. You will need a trellis.

Well this was my first year planting a row of them, (in a row and made a Florida weave trellis and growing the up that vertical. Now I'm thinking maybe a upside down V type is better but, idk) and I was certainly EXPECTING to have lots of problems pollinating from all the research I did and few yt videos I saw. But so far they've grown awesome up the weave, nice and tidy and little space, pick some leaves and tip prune now and then but lots of air and light getting in anyway, leaves were perfect green then they got covered in little yellow flowers everywhere..... and frankly I thought was all quite pretty. Kinda surprised how pretty. Kinda proud haha. Anyway took awhile with no fruit so was like "here we go. Lot of work for growing leaves." But saw bees on them alot and just gave them a shake sometimes. (Idkbifit even works for cucumber but) And man, started getting these tiny cute baby cucumbers then soon grew unto a big deep green one I gave my Mom and she said was great. Soon another two for her. Then found one half eaten on ground by possum or something and thought ok, they'll all get eaten now. Next day two in ground but not eaten. I fektlike giving up gardening and shooting every wildlife I see@ (not really, kinda) but then that week more just popped out I didn't see before big and green and ready then this week every day go back and find least 6 or 7 big green ones ready. And little ones popping out everywhere. It's kinda exciting tbh, and the family love them. Anyway don't seem to have trouble pollinating at all that type but I'll look for yours too. Think I'll definitely be planting cucumbers again. Ps: so far nothing else eaten by critters. A few sometimes have a bit of like a white line on the skin so worried what that is but otherwise.

Yes you can. Make sure it’s not more than 6“ x 6“. Too much larger and it could affect the overall plant.

bigger they get more bitter they get, is it a pickling cucumber might be the breed thats bitter.

Try Parethenotropic cucumbers. They are also called seedless. They are self pollinating and pretty easy to grow.

My cucumber plants look wonderful but they have a ton of mail flowers and only one or two female flowers have any suggestions

A couple of things. 1. If the flowers started coming out 2 weeks ago your right on schedule. Males come out first for that time period on average . 2. If temps are above 85 they have a tendency to throw male flowers more. Shade the plant and apply some mulch at the base to help it cool. 3. Try side dressing the plant with a Potassium rich fertilizer. (The third number on the fertilizer bag.) All these can stimulate the fruiting portion of the plants life cycle.

it good to prune of dieing leaves and fruit you dont want. other then that it up to you as what you want. vining all over the place or tight and kept.

I found a couple of baby cucumbers growing and the thorns are black...I haven’t seen this in three yrs..🤷‍♀️....

@@yaddayadda....9080 It May be because they were picked while still young. Idk, I'm gonna wait til a really big on developments and see. Cross-pollination is possible, as I've got some English cucumbers nearby, but they don't have that prickly characteristic. We shall see. Good luck 👍

Then we can rule out calcium deficiency. There are a couple of potential reasons. 1. Too little water. If there are mature fruit bite into one and see if it’s bitter. 2. Insufficient pollinations. Sometimes happens early in the season when the pollinators are not that active. 3. Pickle worms. Look at the cukes and see if there is a smoke hole with light green fluid near it. If it is the first just increase the water. 1-2 inches a week. Keep the soil damp not wet The other 2 reasons remove the effective fruit and wait. Apply BT once weekly to the plant in the evening to keep the worm pressure down. Hope this helps. Let me know.

My cucumbers are about 5-6 inches, this was my first time growing a garden, and everyone laughed because I kill plants, but when do I pick them? I have about 5 big ones and about 7 smaller ones.

5-6 inches is actually a good size depending on the type. In cucumbers when you pick them a little early the seeds are softer and sweeter. The larger they get the more bitter they can become. Pick in the morning and use a sharp knife or snips to cut them off the vine. Twisting them can cause damage to the plant. Good job on your cukes!

You should start seeing blooms in the next several days. 45-55 days is average. You are also hitting the upper temp limit for the cukes at 35c. Much higher and they could stress and abort the flowers. Use a shade cloth if you can when it’s hot and keep the air circulating. You should be fine. Let me know how it goes. its size or shape is irrelivate. you can throw it away or you can eat it.

When the earwigs are caught in the foil, you just grab the foil & throw it away. Omg! That's ridiculous. Earwigs crawl extremely fast. They will just run all around the garden & find new ways to multiply & destroy our plants. I would dunk the foil loaded pests in boiling water, so they dont crawl all over the garden again. Water must be boiled beforehand 😊

If it’s sprayed with tangle foot they aren’t going anywhere. Your right. If earwigs are deterred off one plant they are off to the next. Thanks for the input.

My cucumbers just bear and dry up

I have two cucumber plants growing in pots up against a trellis. They are both about 3' to 4' tall and Ive kept the lower leaves trimmed up so they don't touch the soil. I have had female flowers from the very beginning and have aprox 25 or so now. I don't have any male flowers. Every single female flower ( with small cucumber behind it) died off. I kidnapped a few male flowers from a friend and brought them over to the females and I self inflicted some cucumber sex. Im curious to see what happens. My question is, Is it possible that both of these plants haven't produced 1 single male flower? Will they ever?

I dont now the variety of the plant ( bought them the local garden center here in town) I started trimming a few leaves when the plant was aprox 2' and had 8 to10 leaves on plant. I also want to add that Ive crown cucumbers for years and never ran into this before.

I'm sorry that I failed to tell you from the very beginning one plant made one cucumber and after that no more were made and that's when I noticed that all of the flowers were female. literally 20 plus have flowered and died off since then and right now all the flowers are all female. There are no male.

I bought Cucumber seeds labeled as Poinsette but I am not sure if its accurate. No male flowers. The female flowers are small. There's a lot of fruits but it rots after a few days. There was 1 fruit that grew 3 inches but it had hole in it and turned yellow. I've done it all, egg shells milk, mollases, neem oil hydrogen peroxide vermicast 😂😂😂

Hey, thanks for the question. It sounds like a pollination issue. If you don’t have male flowers or the females are not getting pollinated the fruit will dry up and fall off. If you have only a few males hand pollinate them. If you have the time based on your growing zone you can start another plant. What part of the world are you in? Temperature can effect male/female flower ratio also. Temps in the mid 60’s produce more female. Temps in the mid 80’s produce more males.

Zone 12. No male flowers at all. I saw an article sayung too much flower could be the reason. Got irritated once and cut them all of except for the top part. It has one fruit that hasn't grown for more than a week now anf a flower attached to that hasn't bloomed yet and might not bloom ever😂
