    In reality,this dance and rhythm name its called GUAGUANCO',,,and its part of a dancing group,called RUMBA,,,,Basically integrated by 3 types of cuban dance-rhythm,,,(GUAGUANCO,COLUMBIA & YAMBU).Columbia its an skill dance,traditionally for mens,Yambu,was conceived for the elders,after hard working days,slower path in both, dance and rhythm,while Guaguanco its a couple seduction-flirt kind off dance.Some people in America and in the world,took many cubans rhythms and they DIDN,T KNOW THEIR COMPLEXITY or simply ,label it different as NEW RYTHMS for marketing purposes,(as Salsa,which in fact is SON CUBANO)or this type of rumba. You could even watch some breakdance,or hiphop dancers,incorporating,rumba steps without even knowing, it sometimes,,,(specially with the COLUMBIA kind). Keep on enjoying and maybe one day you could travel to .t"he island of the music"and live it.

    There are different types of Rumba. The one you're probably accustomed to is the American version. Originating from Africa, it made it's move to Cuba and then to America. It became popular in the states when tourism to South America became popular. I'm guessing the Cuban version had Spanish influence. I'm only saying that because instruments that aren't percussion sound similiar and the rest sounds like a bit of Spanish flamenco playing and others too. That's my understanding of it anyways :)

    @@TendaiD8 Good thing you're guessing,since there isn't that so called American Version of Rumba... Rumba and more exactly the 3 rythms in it (guanguanco',yambu and columbia)are cubans born genre,Africa and Spain,provided part of the ingredients,but not the "whole product".Cubans cook it!! Then on the 50th,some, non aboriginal cubans musicians,started to incorporate the cuban known rythms,(dues to growing popularity in movies and tv) while "whitenning "the raw cuban hippie rumbas steps, giving a make-up and created an edulcorated product,derivated from Cuban Music.... presented under the label "SOCIAL DANCE".For the better reception among the caucasians, "so prude" and "stiff" in their natural rythmical perception and reading

    @@MrSivram28There are levels and layers to understand perfectly the "Rumba" Genesis and Evolution,Specially since Rumba WAS CREATED in CUBA,With the fusion of INGREDIENTS,indeed From AFRICA (on the rythm part) and the spain flamenco countertemps on the singing part,its very simplistic to asume that CUBAN RUMBA is "simply a mix of different African Dances". Sorry i don't have time to get deeper into guiding you to better understand my assesment from a musical point of vue. Just do your homework ,as i did working on my research, together with a known ethnologists and musicians multidiscplinarian investigation team,embarked in a deep research about this topic and society. Then, maybe you'll catch the subtle nuances of what i'm giving you as a gift"with my reply. Rumba is Cuban, as the "Cuban Son"Is ,(Father of rythms as mambo,chachacha,guaracha,charanga,salsa and timba). "The most famous cooks in the world, aren,t recognized for the ingredients they use to create their dishes and recipies..... Their become famous for their "culinarian creations",only when completed,armonically mixed & labeled. SO...ITS THE SAME IN THE MUSIC ENVIRONMENT TOO! The Missisipi BLues have Mali ingredients but the "cooks and kitchen" were slaves and their descendents in USA. The Brazilian Samba have Angolan's ingredients,but the cooks and kitchen were located in BRAZIL. So,its the case of Cuba and all the rythms that they created. That's why they are called "The Island of the Music"....And that,s why a simplistic approach to its culture its not the best way to comprenhend. God bless!

    How did this kind of rumba become ballroom rumba? Is only guaganco danced like this? Is all authentic Cuban rumba danced like this? How did danzon (which in videos I've seen is upright and formal (almost stiff) and moderate-pace (not lively)) become rumba? Ancestry: Contradanza > Danzon > Bolero-Son / Rumba > Son Montuno > Mambo > Cha Cha > Salsa. Yes? Ancestry thru a different branch: Bolero-Son > Bolero > American Bolero. (American is much slower) Ancestry alternative filter: Bolero-Son (= Cuban Rumba (?)) > American Rumba > International Rumba.

  • @ClaveGringaSeattle

    @ClaveGringaSeattle

    2 жыл бұрын

    This Cuban rumba was not the basis for ballroom rhumba (notice there is an "h" in the ballroom dance name). Ballroom rhumba is actually derived from Cuban son - a beautiful dance form - you can find examples by searching for Cuban son. I suspect when the dance move to the US people thought son would be mispronounced and therefore confusing, so they used the word rhumba. Cuban music is a blend of influences. Cuban rumba is very African - but with Spanish lyrics. Danzon is more European- derived from French musical styles of danza with some Africa rhythmic elements thrown in. Ancestry - 1. Contradanza-Danzon-Mambo-Cha-cha-cha. 2. Son/Son Montuno-Rhumba-Salsa 3. Rumba-Salsa/Timba. Also there are three styles of Cuban rumba- Guaguanco - danced as couples in a game of pursuit; Yambu- the slower form of rumba danced by older people without the pursuit; Columbia - very fast and showy with a single dancer (often male) interacting with the quinto player.
