I like this dance. I like the rhythm, I like the sound of the percussion, I like the shoulder movements, I like the hip movements, I like the leg movements, I like the arm movements, and most of all I like the sexual flavour of the whole thing. I hope to one day travel to Cuba. There are more Rumba than this

How did this kind of rumba become ballroom rumba? Is only guaganco danced like this? Is all authentic Cuban rumba danced like this? How did danzon (which in videos I've seen is upright and formal (almost stiff) and moderate-pace (not lively)) become rumba? Ancestry: Contradanza > Danzon > Bolero-Son / Rumba > Son Montuno > Mambo > Cha Cha > Salsa. Yes? Ancestry thru a different branch: Bolero-Son > Bolero > American Bolero. (American is much slower) Ancestry alternative filter: Bolero-Son (= Cuban Rumba (?)) > American Rumba > International Rumba.

This Cuban rumba was not the basis for ballroom rhumba (notice there is an "h" in the ballroom dance name). Ballroom rhumba is actually derived from Cuban son - a beautiful dance form - you can find examples by searching for Cuban son. I suspect when the dance move to the US people thought son would be mispronounced and therefore confusing, so they used the word rhumba. Cuban music is a blend of influences. Cuban rumba is very African - but with Spanish lyrics. Danzon is more European- derived from French musical styles of danza with some Africa rhythmic elements thrown in. Ancestry - 1. Contradanza-Danzon-Mambo-Cha-cha-cha. 2. Son/Son Montuno-Rhumba-Salsa 3. Rumba-Salsa/Timba. Also there are three styles of Cuban rumba- Guaguanco - danced as couples in a game of pursuit; Yambu- the slower form of rumba danced by older people without the pursuit; Columbia - very fast and showy with a single dancer (often male) interacting with the quinto player.
