Konami is the publisher y'all just love to hate, and recently it's jumped aboard a bandwagon held in equal contempt by decent people everywhere - NFTs!
Yes, nobody could be surprised that one of gaming's most pathetically cynical publishers would go all crypto on us, so let's just tear into Konami once again, shall we?

I've said it on several videos on other channels and I'll say it again: I have had my work stolen for NFTs three times so far, all in the span of a week and a half by completely different people. The only thing that's been a bigger pain in the ass than the time wasted on filing DMCAs to get the listings removed and the money I've had to spend on a service to monitor for future thefts is having to deal with the dudebros who get a chub at the mere _thought_ of NFTs. I've encountered two in particular who were real gems: "Your work wasn't stolen, they just minted it before you did. If you want this to stop you just need to mint it first or take them to court." _Because we all know how easy and affordable taking someone to court is._ And the real winner: "Look man I'm sorry you're upset but please understand that complaining about your OC being stolen or whatever won't help anything." I'm a professional illustrator, designer, and colorist with 15 years of industry experience and a BFA in illustration. But yeah, I'm just bitching about my OC being stolen. "Or whatever." As if being a hobbyist/amateur would have somehow made stealing my work _magically okay._ Fuck NFTs and the doorstops who steal artwork for them. I'm glad these companies are getting blasted for trying to shove this shit down our throats. I keep repeating myself on videos about this to spread the word about what's happening to artists right and left as a result of this bandwagoning.

I remember when my uncle bought a parcel of land on the moon. I thought that was the dumbest thing a person could spend money on - a piece of paper signifying ownership of nothing that no one could ever really see or use and doesn't actually grant any legal privileges. NFTs may well have topped that because at least owning a piece of the moon is a nice idea an doesn't burn down a rainforest.

Right? My sister compared NFTs to the whole buy a star thing, and I felt the odd compulsion to point out there's something nifty about the star thing. Plus, most people at least are aware they can't actually do anything with it. No one is acting like that stuff is an investment or something either. Plus all the issues that are inherent to NFTs. She actually agreed with me on those points. They're both technically silly but NFTs are honestly worse.

NFT's are basically just the ultimate form of the "Fine Art industry". The one that takes the works of painters from the 1800's or before (most of whom were regarded as hacks in their own time), labels them the most powerful masterworks of art that the world will ever know, and lets the awe of that label and the back-and-forth selling of said paintings for ever-increasing prices drive up their perceived value so that they can make millions of dollars by just having a painting sitting in their living room or museum. The only difference with NFT's is that they get to drop the pretense that they are the works of classical masters, instead just generating their own works outright and driving up the value by shouting very very loudly into the ether that they have great value. They can produce theoretically infinite numbers of them and claim that each is entirely unique, flooding the market with "Fine Art" pieces that will continue to appreciate in value as long as they can keep convincing people that they are valuable. And like the Fine Art industry, the average person has nothing to do with it, only the super rich need to be involved in order to turn these things into infinite money-generators. And they can pass this legion of Fine Art pieces back and forth without even the inconvenience of having to transport real life paintings from place to place. The whole thing is a sham, just like the entire Fine Art industry has always been. It's been going on for longer than any of us have been alive, the power of the internet has just allowed them to evolve the concept to a ridiculous level, so that they are no longer limited by physical storage space or even having to find works of art that already exist. They can mass produce the art themselves and give it value by behaving like it has value, just like they have always done.

well, the answer is kind of twofold. Primarily, it comes from the fact that capitalists will chase money no matter what. They don;t care about long term viability, nor keeping face. they smell a get richer quicker scheme, and by their nature they pursue it in all viable forms. That means that without any cospiratorial nature inherent, you can bet on them playing follow the leader and all doing the same dirty, shitty things in quick succession. ironically, if it was just a few of them, this would be very self destructive and manifest the consequences of their lack of long term planning. However, since they -all- can be trusted to do the same shit, it causes a normalization of behaviour which makes it difficult to organize a concentrated resistance against the practices, ironically ensuring that these short term gain decisions end up becoming more and more secure/viable in the long term (see microtransactions now being accepted/expected instead of a pr gamble). It's like the darkest possible example of a successfully executed prisoner's dilemma The second aspect, however, is culture breeding. This, again, isn't exactly conspiratorial but a beneficial consequence of expected systematic action. Videogame publishers do not give an iota of a fuck about video games. They don't care about artistry, they don't care about originality, they don't care about narrative, and they sure as FUCK do not care about gamers who buy their products. So, when the people who make the most high profile games all have this generalized disregard for bot the product and the fanbase, this will alienate the fans who do care about those disregarded aspects. But, what do publishers care about? publishing the games that will net them the most money. So that is games that have a focus on multiplayer (because if all your friends are playing call of fifa: fortlegends, you're gonna want to game with them and get the same game), and games that can be advertized to as wide an audience as possible (so typically easier games that younger gamers can play) with the flashiest and most hyped up marketing schemes. All of these impulses are again in service of immediate monetary profit, but it creates a culture where a wide net is cast, but this wide net only catches those gamers too jaded, selfish, or young/inexperienced to give a fuck about the degradation of the medium as a vehicle for art and creative experiences. It creates a culture that as a whole forgets that such experiences are even possible. It not only caters to, but actively reinforces the lowest common denominator to the point where any other denominator becomes seen as fringe, pretentious, or even 'political'. Thus, Gamers (tm) are made and raised. and the pursuit of short term profit creates a base that is entirely willing to fuel the next scheme, and the one after, and the one after, because getting swindles is all they've ever known or cared about.

The more I think of NFTs the deeper I spiral into an existential crisis about money and economics. Like, I've always known that at the end of the day, money isn't "real", in that its value and utility is a social construct used to make exchanging goods and services more convenient. If every human on earth were to disappear right now, money would be worthless; just a bunch of paper, metal, and digital code. But for the sake of simplicity, we all silently agree that money has value, and we can use that to get the things we want or need. But the very nature of NFTs just brings the subjective value of money into sharp relief, selling imaginary goods for imaginary money with imaginary value, all so you can invest in even more imaginary money and imaginary goods. It's like kids playing pretend with a Fisher-Price toy cash register, but at least playing pretend doesn't use more electricity than Sweden to operate.

The most frustrating thing about ‘NFT Games’ is I still don’t know what exactly that’s supposed to be! Like, what part of, say, Fortnite would be the NFT? The gun? The skin? The skin for the gun? How does any of that stuff being an NFT change how it’s earned or used in-game? I know some people have claimed it’s important because you can use and sell the NFT outside the game, but given that those things are only useful in the game (can’t exactly put a fortnite gun in Age of Empires after all) and selling in-game items outside games is generally frowned upon by publishers who want BOTH players to buy the skins so…what’s the point? What does the publisher get out of not getting to sell a skin to two customers who would rather give it back and forth to each other? And what do customers get that they didn’t already get buying in-game skins via microtransactions? Maybe I’m thinking of this wrong? Is an NFT game actually a game that makes blockchain off your computer as you play it? If that’s the case, how exactly do you sell that to PC gamers who probably don’t want their GPUs overtaxed and their electricity bills skyrocketing for a game that by definition can’t have top of the line graphics and performance because it’s using graphics hardware and CPU hardware for non-graphic and non-in-game processes?

Now of course they're in a bit of trouble, because a whole bunch of pachinko parlors were already forced to shut down and the ones that are still open aren't exactly lining up to buy new machines...

It's not anti capitalist its pro real capitalism anti corrupt garbage that leads people to turn to objectively failed evil crap like socialist ideas. Capitalism never meant exploiting people with crap products no one wants and never will unless certain slime gets their way in re defining the language. It means economic freedom to create goods and services that sell to people on the merit of those goods and services, and in doing so create jobs and make money for yourself. Intepreting Jim's justified lambasting of abusive practices as anti capitalist is insulting to jim, to you, and to the very thing that allowed video games to exist in the first place.
