Soon it will be over, this terrible war. The things I've seen... the mass graves... just limp piles of red coats and fluffy white beards and shiny black boots. I remember when we burned the crackers, and the decorations. Like machine gun fire it was, for minutes on end. So many terrible terrible jokes... someones life's work, up in smoke in an instant. And we cheered. Real "christmas cheer", hah. Soon it will be over, and we will have won. But at what cost? I ask you that. And how will we pay when the bill comes due?

Why? What does your being Jewish have to do with religion? A lot of people and entities (hello, Britannica) seem to confuse Jewish and Judaism. One is a race comprised of multiple ethnicities and the other is an umbrella covering a variety pack of religious flavors. Your comment was funny, though, and if that's the reason, it's reason enough.

My mother bought into the War on Christmas bullshit. She ranted about it for a good hour one day a few years ago. I said, "get in the car, we're going shopping." Which for her is like a dog hearing the can opener going. We stop at Wal-Mart. I walked directly to the outdoor section, which is always converted into the holiday section. I stopped and said "What do you see?" "christmas stuff" she says. "What was in the season candy area when we came in?" "Christmas stuff." I left. "Wait, we're not shopping?" "We're window shopping." To home depot. Same deal. Same response. She obviously knows what's going on and is now trying to convince me to head home. "Oh no. We're far from done." After six or seven stores, all with prominently displayed and advertised Christmas sections, we finally went home. I've not heard about the War since.

Their mouths gaped open and closed as their tinny voices played over one another. Their arms jerked up and down. One of them said "Hello, what would you like for Christmas?" as the other one said "Christmas is the best time of year for good little boys and girls!" I feel like Christ would feel fine about the consumerism aspect of Christmas as long as everybody who was able to, donated food and toys to the annual toy drives/soup kitchens. I've never been religious, but the big thing I took away from mandatory religion classes was that Christ only ever wanted people to help those less fortunate than themselves, and to stay humble by remembering that, even if you're not doing great yourself, there's always someone in a worse position who could use your help. And that's a GREAT message for anyone. Buying a bunch of toys to donate around the holidays is still engaging in the commercialisation of Christmas, but at least it goes towards something positive - making a sick child stuck in hospital on the big day feel a bit happier. Meanwhile I'm sure people like Alex Jones wouldn't donate anything to anyone, and would describe it as a certain word (hint: it begins with 's'!).

Even if I don't believe this cool chap existed, the fact remains it's a nice story with a good message. It amazes me how Catholicism is the oldest and most conservative sect of Christianity but its priest and members are generally the most progressive, especially amongst American Christians. I think part of it is that catholic priests have to go to school for a very long time and have to devote their whole life to be priest, as well as sacrifice their social and romantic lives. Because of this, they actually know what it means to be a true Christian. But this isolation is also why so many catholic priests are pedophiles, so there needs to be a balance.

I talked to my Muslim aunt about it and she was not in the least bit surprised. She's from Pakistan and both her and her family love Christmas despite being observant Muslims. I was raised Catholic but I'm not a particularly religious adult and I love it, too, so it makes sense. It's just a fun thing to do, and what's wrong with that? If it means something to your religion fine, celebrate it the way you want, no one's saying you can't, but don't take a dump on the rest of us who want to enjoy it, too, and celebrate it the way we want to.
