I finally watched "Shattered Glass" this evening because Todd referenced it in his debunk of Somerton back then. It's funny to observe some of the similarities, like Glass also suicide-baits his editor Chuck into feeling bad for him and constantly asks people if they are mad at him to sympathy-bait. James should write a novel about an impostor youtuber, similarly to how Glass wrote a novel about a hack journalist after the fact.

36:08 From a serious perspective though, IQ is real, it just isn’t a measure of intelligence. It correlates a lot closer to pattern recognition which can be related to intelligence but is definitely its own separate thing. It’s just that the public discussion around IQ has conflated its meaning past what it actually represents.

I'm 72% sure the person commenting "These people are evil, misleading, and manipulating racists and sexists who need to be stopped from indoctrinating other people who are helpless." Is actually talking about the people behind the petition. The 25% of insecurity is because both sides use the exact same rhetoric and arguments to come to diametrically opposite conclusions, and the remaining 3% is because I'm malignantly assuming their bad grammar is proof of their allegiance.

after rewaching this video for the tenth time, i think my favorite part is the way somerton sounds so eloquent and smart and has such an enormous vocabulary on his videos but then he struggles so hard to form a sentence whenever you hear him speak for himself in those clips from his streams. he really tried so hard to be seen as smart.

I always laugh at the clip of Philip saying "It's my video so _if anything_ , it was my responsibility", as though a significant percentage of people watching his "apology" were seriously confused about that and he's just helpfully clearing up the confusion. And then Somerton took it even lower by mouthing similar garbage while deliberately trying to set up his co-writer to take the fall but also performatively defending him from "the haters" at the same time. Amazing.

Honestly I don't get the hype behind this video. It was an hour long expose about a guy I don't care about doing things I didn't care about stapled onto about half an hour of a worse version of Defunctland's search for the Disney channel jingle. I watched this because I enjoyed the plagiarism video and in that it is mentioned that Jacksfilms recommended this as his 3rd/2nd favorite video of whatever year, I just don't see it really

Just want to take a moment to appreciate the visual joke that is the edit of "every tiny thing" making Hbomb a tiny talking head in his own fingertips at 2:33:26 I'd seen the earlier "Evil Queens" video and its subsequent "of course I'm going to make videos based on books!" excuse-upload afterward, and hid Somerton's channel from being recommended to me from there because that didn’t sit right with me. I was a student at the time, and my lessons on how not to plagiarize for homework were quite fresh. I left quietly, and didn't think about him again for years until this video made me remember that incident. It feels very surreal learning something that felt completely unimportant if annoying at the time (who remembers every video you disliked and casually decided not to continue watching?) would turn into internet lost media by being hurriedly erased for damage control and the biggest plagiarism scandal of the medium.

There is something real sinister about seeing that shot of queer creators and how many of them are creators of color. They produce the best work as they suffer the worst circumstances, and it is so unrecognized and disrespected that a white male KZreadr can steal it to popular acclaim while those creators, unlike this fraud, are so much more heavily questioned and doubted about whether *they* "have the expertise necessary" to discuss what they do, effectively proving the hypothesis that a white fraud is more trustworthy than a minority critic. It is not enough to critique plagiarism - we have to know that he stole not only because he could get away with the original theft, but because the targets of his theft were not people he considered important, therefore he did not imagine anyone else would, either, and he did it banking on a larger culture of disrespect towards minorities that wouldn't even be bothered by stealing as long as the people who suffered it were people of color/minorities/women.

I think I find myself coming back to this video essay because I never feel like I'm done thinking about it. I've grown a lot as a person in the last 5 years. The world is vastly, vastly different. I thought being 20 back then was... old. It was certainly older than I ever imagined I'd be, as a teen. At 21, 22, 23, 24, and now... I'm back to this video. I'm so much older than I ever thought I'd be, and life keeps changing. Things don't make sense like they used to. Other things make more sense than a 20 year old could ever dream. I think I'd like to dare to be stupid, and re-engage with a life that has been so hard. Because even though everything says it's not going to work... we do it anyway, and hope against darkness. That's how we beat our own personal Unicron.

First time I watched this video, I was like wow this is great, but the KZread recommendation system is broken, this damn video ends up autoplaying while I’m asleep at least 3 times a week. And I’m sick of it I mean i still agree with the points, but it is so grading to wake up to over and over again. Like I’m sorry man but I’ve been so over exposed to this video that I’m unsubbing and telling KZread not to recommend me this video and possibly your whole channel if that doesn’t work.
