Cruisin' at 74: a portrait of the biker as a 70-something codger

Reflections about riding motorcycles on my 74th birthday with insightful references to James Joyce and Abraham Maslow. Includes a mercifully short biography of Papa Steve.

@@papastevesgarage 👏 Awesome!!! I can’t wait for your new content on the very bike that I own and love! I am certain that your dedicated subscribers like myself will be overjoyed to hear that you have new videos in the works for later this year. I just hit the tender old age of 65 a few weeks ago, and at my old age I truly appreciate your knowledge and expertise about the Honda Rebel CMX 1100 DCT. I purchased the 2022 model last August and it had only 1224 miles on the clock! It came with the Memphis Shades Batwing fairing that the dealership added at no extra charge. I’m now just waiting for the pollen to ease up so that I can begin enjoying the riding season. Thank you Papa Steve. 👍

Another Happy Birthday, I always find it humorous when guys in their seventies try to impress everybody by branding themselves as old codgers who are sound enough of body and mind to be riding motorcycles. I started riding in 1959. Now in my eighties, I still twist the wick to the stop. You guys are rank beginners, Best wishes from somebody still in their first childhood. You are never too old to have a happy childhood. I like the way you tell a story.

That's me. -- a codger, sound enough of body and mind to ride a motorcycle. I didn't own my first motorcycle until I turned 71 so you've got many more decades of riding experience on me. I'm not trying to impress anyone, though. My only motivation is to share my personal joy and enthusiasm, along with whatever experience, wit and wisdom comes from three-quarters of a century of context. I chatted with another motorcycle codger on Morgan Territory Road a couple of weeks ago. He was in his 80s, on a Harley, and looking forward to riding into his 90s. I suspect he'll make it. I'm looking forward to riding into my 90s also, not so much a Harley. I admire the Harley mystic the way I admire a restored '32 Ford roadster. But, I haven't owned a car with pushrod valves since buying a Nissan Stanza when I was in graduate school 30 years ago. My pre-Stanza cars: '53 Chevy, '54 Ford, '71 Mercury, '61 MGA, '67 Triumph TR-4A, '62 Volvo P1800, and a couple of 140 series Volvos, were all low revving, underpowered, carbon monoxide belching, gas guzzlers. At least the sports cars were light weight and nimble, if not very fast, and the Volvo 140s both had fuel injection. So, overweight Harley V-twins don't call to me much.

@@papastevesgarage My use of the word "impress" was too harsh as I was just trying to be cute and failed at the attempt. My last car with push rods was a 1941 Hudson. My current bike is a 2020 Guzzi Stone S. ( with push rods ). Many more happy miles to you. Richard

I'm a 5'4", 125lb, 56 year old female and my husband just bought me the 2023 1100T DCT..... as my first real bike . I'm loving it! He's been riding for decades and trying to get me to learn for years. My biggest regret is not starting at least 15 years ago, but I'm doing it now and I'm much more aware of speeds and safety now so maybe it's a good thing I held off 🤷‍♀️. (For the record I started with a 90's honda rebel 250 so I can handle a manual transmission, I just prefer the DCT ). No time like the present to live your dreams!

Happy B-Day Steve... When I heard you say Elgin... We stomped around the same ground for awhile... We moved out west from Bartlett... I recently got a Rebel 1100manual.... & It's actually my first street bike. Being in my upper 50's I've ridden all sorts of things over the years & finally decided to get my own... I haven't done any mods yet but I do like the idea of putting a center stand on it which I'll probably do after watching your other video... Anyway enjoy & stay safe...

Definitely first will be a seat... Then I was watching LifeOfBurch and he installed a fairing/windscreen on his Rebel from Memphis Shades they have several but I'll probably go with the Gauntlet, I like the quick change option...

The lack of a centre stand is a real pain. I have made do by building an adjustable (for tyre-width) front wheel clamp from wood, steel brackets, nuts and bolts, and then investing in a 'Lève moto centrale' from ConStands. You have to fit permanently a couple of sturdy sleeves to the bike, but the thing works well indoors. It lifts the whole bike maybe 10cm off the ground. On rollers, you can easily move the bike wherever you want on a solid, flat surface.

Not sure if you're making videos anymore, but if you could get one going for installing highway pegs or something that will help a tall 6'2 rider rest my legs easier. That would be great! I dont like how bent my knees are while cruising..

I have a video planned for crash guards. I will be video taping it in April. The guards I am installing will double as highway pegs. You might consider forward controls, also.
