I've been driving several dozens of Crown Vics over the years (and still do) - from model year 2001 through to 2011. In the recent past all of them are being purchased used from other agencies and Police/Sheriff departments (Ok, there's no other option, since the Crown Vics became discontinued). We stick with the CVPI's because the (all brand new purchased) Chargers are unreliable and causing problems all the time. Maintenance of the Chargers is expensive and although the HEMI's fly, there's simply too much disadvantages over the CVPI's. Nothing fits easily. The seats are not designed to accommodate one while wearing a fully equipped duty belt and Chrysler/Dodge/Fiat changes vital things every other year which makes it impossible to simply keep the same Police equipment and move it from one car to the next. I personally own three Crown Vics, a 2001, a 2005 and a 2006. I am inclined to say that I know a thing or two about those cars... Regarding Bullet Proof Door-Panels: No, they were not available only on the 2006 and up models. These panels have been around for longer. My 2005 has them, my 2006 does not. I've seen 2003's with the panels and 2010's without . It always depends on whether a department ordered their vehicle(s) with the ballistic panels or not AND whether they left them in the vehicle when they decommissioned it. Sometimes you'll find vehicles that still have the plaques stating "Ballistic Panel" while the panels actually had been removed. Sometimes the doors won't have the plaques, yet do have the panels. Remove the small covers under the door-openers to peek into the door. That's the only way to find out whether the panels are there or not. The round touch-button in the center of the dash-board may work only with the ignition on - or it may work at all times. It depends on how the specific vehicle's electronic control unit has been programmed. This control unit can usually only be programmed by a Ford dealership. 2005 and up models can be set up by programming to do or not do a lot of things which previously (prior to 2005) needed more extensive changes. Like whether the interior lights will come on or not when you open the driver door, the passenger door, any door, whether there will be a warning chime audible when you keep the headlights turned on, do not use the seat-belt, etc. All this can be programmed. It's even possible to install a Cruise Control by just mounting a steering wheel with the switches and having the Control Unit programmed accordingly. You won't need anything else (on models 2005 and newer). The round touch button in the door is usually also triggering the trunk-lid release. However: Some departments may have them re-wired to use this button as a release for the rifle-rack (as shown in the video). It's certainly not a common thing, because most departments will go with a rifle-rack release that uses a code or thumb-print release function. Personally I have never seen that this button was used as a release button for the rifle rack. But it's certainly a possibility. A "Low Jack" system has at no time been a standard- or at least widely common "feature" on the CVPI. That's something that had been installed individually by the specific department. Keep in mind that most departments keep their units simple and as cheap as possible. What's way more common is a switch that keeps the engine running (in order to keep the battery/batteries) charging) while out on foot, yet with the key out of the ignition lock. Meaning that you may exit the car, pull the key and still keep the engine running. If someone tries to drive off in your unit, the steering wheel will lock and the "pursuit" is over. That's cheaper and way more effective than a low-jack system. You don't want some crack-head driving around in your patrol vehicle for long. Having him/her crash into the next wall is way better than retrieving your car hours later, not? ;) If you're in the market for a retired Police car, simply invest some extra time into checking out all the various functions and features of that one particular vehicle that you're interested in buying. There are NO secrets! Check what it does and what it does not. These things have been and are constantly being customized to fit the requirements of the specific department or agency. There are no general rules that you can count on.

Jake Curley The switch in the dash for the trunk has nothing to do with the ECU it's no where near that complicated. If you pull that trim piece off and look behind the button you will see 2 plugs, one allows the button to open the truck any time even without a key. If you plug the other one into the switch it allows it to only work when the ignition is hot, that's all there is to it.

Here's another CVPI trick for 2006 and up, hold the odometer reset button when turning on the igntition. After 5 seconds, you'll be able to get into a secret menu where by tapping the reset button you can get to all kinds of neat modes, one of them being a digitial speedometer. You're welcome. :D :D

The button on the door of a CV is for a trunk release as well unless wired differently. Also the trunk WILL open if the car is off and in gear. The doors are not bullet proof unless you have the ballistic panels in them which most departments took out and reused on the new CVPI that they got. Yes some left them but most took them and to buy them you are looking at a price around $1,000 a door which is why most PDs just kept switching them over to the new cars.

I/P door release is an add on option. That way the officer just has to open the door and reach down to open the trunk. You see them do this allot on C.O.P.S. I pulled mine from a junkyard, the harness and connector are already in the door and then you just pop out the insert.

Mr random, the switch on the trunklid is not lojack, but for 1 0f two functions. 1 is trunk light 2nd is rho emergency lights. Second fun fact, there is no key out engine on function, however alot of departments have an interface box installed under dash with a switch to lock out your trans. Door button is oem Ford trunk release. The one on the dashboard is the p71 specific trunk release which if you pull the panel off you can switch it from ignition on release to ignition off release. Door panels were always avail with ballistic material , it depends on how it was ordered from the factory. If you wanna know for sure how your crown came equipped from Ford, check out Ford etis. Just type in that fancy Vin number and read away. Have fun and love your cars!

But only if you were to buy the dual exhaust Police Package! That you had to know a dealer that would order one for you, or could find one! The one other difference that was a tell tale was a blacked out grill! Well my boss had a friend that had found a nice met red CV brand new in the fleet buyers book that was never delivered! He was able to buy! It had all the the items you mentioned, plus what I was able to let him know about first! Also they came with 3:55 gears with posi!

FYI, the on/off switch at the beginning was not for Lojack, it was to be able to turn of red/blue flashing lights inside the trunk (they are visible when the trunk is open, but obviously removed for when the car is stripped). Also, the Lojack box found in the trunk on some cars is the Lojack *tracking receiver* for cop cars, not the broadcast unit installed in cars to let them be tracked. Also, the buttons on the dash and door are (from the factory) BOTH trunk releases. The one on the dash is for the passenger to be able to pop the trunk, the second in the door is because the one on the dash is often blocked by laptop mounts. One more place to check for contraband is around the seams of the fabric on the rear of both front seats, and up inside the very bottom of the seat. If the car did not have a cage, those areas are reachable from the back seat. I would remove both front seats and carefully check them.

    1. The trunk release button at the center of the dash does NOT care if the car is in park and does not care if the ignition is on or off -- that button works 24/7 2. The ballistic door panels on 2006-2011 Crown Vic police interceptors was an OPTION -- not every CVPI has it.

None of these things surprised me. I've installed all of these options in cars. As someone who built police cars, I can tell you that the options vary from car to car, even among the same police department. The functions of the buttons and switches can vary greatly as well. The switch in the trunk isn't likely to be lo-jack as lo-jack systems aren't meant to be turned on and off. More likely a control for trunk lights, as they are a fairly common option. The stab-proof panels also may or may not be in the car, as these are also an option for police builds

  • @KipperKushman

You cant turn lojack on and off....that switch is most likely for flashing lights in the trunk. When the trunk is open it may block the overheads, however they are usually wired into the trunk light so they come on automatically when the trunk opens.

Things definitely change over time. My '98 P71 doesn't have the baby seat anchors, or that switch you showed in the door pocket. Also, my trunk button does work with the engine off. It also has one weird quirk where the passenger front door is the only one that won't activate the dome light.

The Lojack part is kind of irrelevant, it can be equipped on any car, and even if your particular vehicle does have it, it's useless and couldn't be re-used. Also, you'll find in many cases, the box you find isn't a Lojack system designed to prevent theft, rather just a GPS. Most police-model vehicles don't come with anti-theft options from the factory and most agencies don't care to spend money on such aftermarket/additional options. It takes a real tool to steal a marked police vehicle. The button on the driver door isn't a gunrack release, it's a trunk release. The button could of course be rewired to do anything, but it does not come factory like that, and most gunracks are wired to the siren/light control module. Also, bulletproof doors were an option, so you'll find many CVPI's don't have them.

Yeah I think Ford started offering the ballistic panel option in 2006 models but it's incredibly rare you find them as a lot of departments didn't bother. A lot of people think it's a standard option on all Crown Vics. "Bro aren't those doors bulletproof?" One out of five times I'm filling up at a gas station, someone will also ask, "Dude aren't those Crown Vic's supercharged!?" So people have a lot of misconceptions about the ol' Crown Vic.

Had a 93 CVLX, 210hp, deep-dish BBS-STYLE rims; it guzzled gasoline. Now I drive an 03 Lincoln Town Car Cartier L; on the Michelin Energy LX4 (98T) tires, it returned 28.7866 mpg with 25 psi in the ER tire and a slipping transmission -- on the original spark plugs, coils and injectors after nearly 260,000 miles. As Michelin no longer makes the Energy LX4, I was going to switch to the Premier A/S (99H), but the Premier LTX (99V) was rated higher and cost about 5 percent less. Just FYI as a possible alternative to Goodyear's "LE-rated" tires.

where did you get this information? it's bogus as all get out. the switch in the trunk deck lid, yeah that's for extra lighting because Ford didn't put crap for lights in the trunk. all the screw holes in the deck lid are evidence of that. why would you put a switch to turn the LoJack off? do you even understand what LoJack is? The doors only have Kevlar in them if and only if they are ordered with it. it was a $2k option so not many did. The trunk release... that was your chance man. pop that panel off and there is a second wire. one will only allow the trunk to open if key is in on or accy other makes it live all the time. That button on the door, on some packages it's the gas door release.

The On/Off switch wasnt for the Lojack it was for the trunk mounted LED safety flashers. When engaged there would have been red and blue LEDS there illuminating the space behind the cruiser while the officer was in the trunk. Its for safety, most officers leave them off however so they arent blinded when they open the trunk.

My 07 P71 has the trunk button on center console that works all the time, even without key, and the one on the door only works with key on in park. Both operate trunk, so maybe door button depends on different setups.

hello and that's a great video did not know that the Crown Vic had some of that other stuff that you mentioned like the bullet proof door the proof driver seat so you can't get stabbed from behind now what I'm wondering is is the Mercury Grand Marquis the same way I know that Grand Marquis is the fancy or version of the Crown Vic

My 2007 Ford Crown Victoria for the trunk button that's right below the radio there's two wire harnesses behind that plastic plate one of them allows you to Pop the trunk without the car being started and if you switch the wire harness with the other one you then can only open the trunck when the ignition is on/car starter. Just a friendly tip that might help someone out.

the switch in the trunk was for trunk lights so the officer could see in the dark. "lojack" was not something you just turned on and off. think about it, why would you turn it off and on?? the other "hidden" trunk button was due to most vics being set up with a radio covering the heater controls and the radio. your rifle release was wired through the lighting controller for your wig wags. alley lights and take down lights. also the cars had to be special ordered with the bullet proof doors, it wasn't standard issue. I do agree about finding stuff in the back seat I've found quite a bit of parfanalia in the rear seat. this guy sounds like he been hitting that Crack pipe that he "found" in the car.

Behind the trunk release button on the dashboard is two sets of wires. One set that will only let you open the trunk with the car running the other set of wires will let you open the trunk with the car off. My 97 and 98 had that option. Crown Vic's are tanks!!

The bullet proof doors are an option not standard. They come in a few ballistic levels. It does cost extra from ford motor company. Look for the ballistic panel badge on the door that will indicate if you do have ballistic panels in your cruiser.

That switch most likely was for something other than Lojack. Patrol cars are not equipped with Lojack. Some have Lojack tracking equipment installed in them. But that equipment belongs to Lojack and is installed and removed by Lojack techs. Agencies are only allowed to have a set number of cars equipped with Lojack tracking. You can identify if a patrol car had/has Lojack tracking installed in it by 4 antennas in a box pattern on the roof, behind the light bar.

the ford mustang and ranger plus the crownvic also can do what is called a cylender efficency test you just have to know how to read the check engin light while it is running the test with the on board cpu and the drive train computer. plus if you hold the throttle all the way down while starting the engin it will do a flood cylender clear this is normaley used for after the car has been worked on or if the engin gets flooded with too much gas. so you can clear the engin so it wont pop the heads or pistions.

I used to do strip-outs & Refits on crown Vic’s seen plenty of stuff hidden in the back seats drugs, knives & improvised weapons along with random stuff that gets lost by the officers going about routine patrol like shotgun shells, other types of ammo and lots of evidence of eating in the car ect. ect.

My center trunk release button works with the car in drive or in park, with the car started or off and while moving - I hit the button just to see one day (Low speed, but moving, I'm not ready to try it at high speed, but suspect the trunk would open) I am 99% sure that mine had lojack at one time, however it was removed. I don't have a extra switch to turn it on or off. I believe mine had lojack because of the antenna pattern on the roof.

Almost everything in this video is optional stuff that varies depending on what the department ordered. Not all Vics 06+ have up armored doors, not all have stab resistant seats, not all have the gun rack button (let alone a gun rack) and LoJack is an option too. 2 of mine didn't have any of these things because you don't really find that kind of stuff necessary on the east coast.

I was talking to the citys police vehicle fleet manager , he was very interested in my car and asked to drive it because mine runs on compressed natural gas and he wanted to see if he could tell a difference . they say its 9 percent less HP , but I cant tell the difference . -- we got to talking about the difference between a regular p73 or p74 crown vic and the p71 and what makes them faster ... they said they swaped ECUs (computers) and there was no difference . the only difference is duel exhaust and rear end gear . theres also suspension tricks like a watts link in the p71 & 72 .. my car is a p72 where it has its own list of tricks looks just like a p71 but it don't have the duel exhaust and rear end gear but has the black grill and door handles and has extra door and window controls from the driver seat .why I don't understand because it all ready has that . so my car was made to be a taxi but never used as one . it was bought new by a real estate company .. this is how it goes that I was told / it might have changed over the years .. p71 = police p72 = taxi package p73 = rental car p74 = dealer sold the "p" being the 6th number in the vin. - a watts link suspension is like a panhard bar from each side mounted on a central pivot , they come standard on corvettes and is part of the Shelby package on mustangs ..

Two things here. A. Not all 06+ doors are bullet proof. Technically non of them are. The ballistic option was just that, an option, and not all cars were sold with that option, and even if they were, the doors would be bullet RESISTANT not bullet proof. B. The button mounted on the bottom of the door is where the factory installed trunk release is located on all panther platform cars (crown vic, Marquis, etc.) the additional button located on the dash is a police pkg option and has two connectors allowing the trunk button to have constant power or switched ignition on only power. If the button on the door doesn't open your trunk then the police dept has modified or disconnected the wiring, but yes, SOME were modified to operate the gun rack.

I didn't want to have to take apart a door panel before asking. thanks for any help.

Chekov's Gunmen - GrayWolfe that's what I thought, which is why I was surprised when Mr random said that "every" CVPI will have ballistic door panels. I was led to believe they were usually taken out and reused like you said as long as they were never shot at. However the stab proof seats I definitely have which is cool I suppose as well.
