I like to tie a wall and diamond knot then roll the knot up inside out which makes a crown and diamond knot which is slightly different to your knot

can anything be done about the gap between the two different knots?

You could tie a footrope knot, then follow it up with the Crown and diamond knot. Will work reasonably well.
