Crossing Wales in a Straight Line! Inspired by GeoWizard
Ойын-сауық
Our latest Straight Line Mission sees Adam & I attempt to cross Wales along a 56km line. Unlike on our Scotland mission last year, this time we decided to let GeoWizard know of our plans ahead of time. With respect to his 'Straight-Line-Mission' legacy, we wanted to give him the opportunity to be the first to cross Wales successfully before our attempt.

@All there's definitely a cultural difference between the UK and central Europe, although we don't have a right to roam like in Scandinavia, trespassing is widely tolerated. I used to spend summers in the Alps as a kid and people jumping our fence and walking 10-20 m past the house happened all the time. There are only two things that would make me suspicious, going unnecessarily close to the house itself and a dude in full on military gear. Also the "maybe he's a solider on a exercise" argument doesn't make sense to me since we have designated maneuver grounds for that.

Enjoyed watching, but two future Tories cracking jokes about GW then proceeding to get all the help in the world every couple of miles whilst doing it in joggers and no backpack points to this being an entirely different challenge to what Tom does. Its the underdog element that makes him so likeable...
Comparing this to GeoWizard's attempt, having a live support crew looks a godsend. They make you eat, make you chat, keen you sane and sharp - on top of there being two of you in the first place. Great setup and hats off to the crew 💛

I dunno. I felt a little bit uncomfortable with the duck crossing situations. I would almost venture to say that it was cheating for a lack of a better word. Maybe not cheating but maybe an unfair advantage. To me, it's the fact that they had assistance to pull them across. I hope not to start a debate or anything over this though. Clearly there aren't really many set rules for these missions. But I've never seen Tom/Geowizard get assistance to that magnitude, and so I just felt like stating my humble opinion. And to the contrary of my opinion, I guess one could just consider it better planning.
@Alexand3ry
Жыл бұрын
@@G.0. Having someone pull them in (at 17:49) rather than pulling themselves in (at 24:50) clearly wasn't a substantial 'advantage' - if anything they put more effort into posing for the shot for the first one. The massive advantage is having someone meet them at the river with an inflatable. But they're following the challenge laid down by Tom, and he did exactly the same in Wales 3 having Verity meet him with a kayak at the reservoir (and then paddle it around an outcropping). So -- fair game, really. They're learning from the master.
@G.0.
Жыл бұрын
@@Alexand3ry Yea, I understand Tom gets assistance from Verity including the fact that she lugged a kaiyak to/ from him (I don't recall whether it was one or both), but he paddled across the reservior by himself from what I remember. As an old git I do think the straight line challenges are good fun but just to be a bit more responsible you should take more care going over and through fences and hedges rather than trampling them. They have probably been in place for decades if not centuries and are there to keep livestock in place and are not just important for the animals and the farmers but an escaped sheep in the road is an obvious traffic hazard. Compared to Tom you seem to be employing the "siege" approach to the challenge like the teams that summit Everest after support climbers set up ropes, ladders and campgrounds for them all along the trail ahead. Good luck with your future adventures boys.😅

Great comms between daddy geo and you guys dropping the vids on the same day. Pleasure to watch both channels after coming back from camping. Two very different styles that are both brilliant to view.
Love watching these 2 missions at the same time. Two very different approaches to the same idea, one a pure solo trek staying largely self-reliant through the whole thing, and the other a massive group effort where the support group would not only give supplies, but also put in some effort for carrying the main adventure bodies and the GPS along the line. Either way a difficult challenge, but I certainly see Tom's attempts as more hardcore, but perhaps a more supported approach is essential to missions like this, as it was on Tom's mission to dribble a football across Britain

I really don't know what it is, but this style of mission with the support crew at every road, no backpacks, no tents, hauled across a river crossing, I dunno... It all seems cheap on adventure. Have to admit that I prefer Tom's method of man vs line, with only occasional (once daily?) restocks and help. Good on you guys, I'm enjoying it and will watch the continuations, but I just don't find this style as entertaining as Tom's from a watcher's perspective knowing there's a full team with help around every corner.
@yowtfputthemaskbackon9202

it has to be said however, that what tom is doing is also considerably more dangerous and has a higher chance of failing the mission for him. he carries more weight which slows him down, which in his previous runs regularily made him rush to reach preset goals, occasionally putting him in a lot of danger, which at times, if he would not have gotten out of, it would have taken hours for someone to find him. he is more likely to get exhausted and more likely to sustain serious injury on a fall (again due to the added weight) he is also less able to escape farmers, will be slower in thick brush, and has to plan around these eventualities constantly. ultimately, these two runs, are a race of sorts. and when you have a race across the atlantic (given there is no time goal, its just about actuallly getting there), flying in a biplane may be more adventorous and noble, but buying a first class ticket and sitting back for a few hours will be the plainly better way to go about it.

I have lots of respect for you guys and it’s great that others are attempting these missions too. But for me just your general tone comes across as way too cocksure. Geowizard’s self-deprecating tone, along with the lack of all the support team elements, means that he becomes your underdog hero as you go through the mission with him. I feel like - even if we know it was in jest - berating his failures comes across pretty poorly considering you’re being brought McDonalds and pork pies every mile or two.
