I used to work for Graham Nash at his recording studio in Hollywood in the early 80's. One day they were playing the original master mix tape of this album, testing out a digital machine for converting it to that format. After this first song was over, Graham says "It still sounds great"! I asked him why he thought their music endured and he said "Because it was made with a lot of love man, a lot of love". And that's how he was about his art, that artists had a responsibility to put love in their art, in their messages, that's how they help change the world for the better, a little here and a little there. My old boss Graham was really a very cool guy.

I liked Graham since his time with The Hollies, when I was 12 years old. It seems he is a nice man. This song was written for or about Judy Collins, the woman Stephen Stills loved and, she left him or so. So one of the best written by Stills. Loved those different parts of this lovely song.

How cool that you used to work with GN.
I think anybody hearing this song for the first time definitely comes alive for that ending!
Steven Stillsand Judy Collins had been together for a while when she broke it off, Steven wrote this to try to win her back. Her reaction was "That's a beautiful song but we're still not getting back together". Anotherfact that adds to the appreciation of this piece (and other Stills' songs) is that he is completely deaf in his right ear and has been since childhood.

This song always reminds me of going go to our local record/head shop. This album was generally on the turntable and thin streams of sandalwood incense gave the room a slight haze. At the back of the shop was a room you entered through a beaded curtain, the walls covered with glowing blacklight posters of Jimi Hendrix, psychedelic geometry and The Zig Zag Man. High Times.

@@Blue-qr7qe I guess we were both lucky to be in areas with a lot of great venues. I was in the Boston/Cambridge area. First live performance I saw was Dion and the Belmonts when I was 14. Was lucky enough to see many of the bands I loved in the early years of rock. Being a guitar player, I got to see most of my personal guitar heroes, Charlie Byrd, Andre Segovia, Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield and Dave Van Ronk, along with others. We had a great venue called The Boston Tea Party, which was similar to the Fillmore East. Most of the same acts played both venues. Saw the Allman Brothers open for The Velvet Underground before they were very well known. All the people you mentioned in your post played there except Al Stewart, George Benson and Tom Waits. I miss all those smaller venues that closed down with the growth of arena rock in the early 70s. And for folk, blues and jazz I liked the really small clubs even more. The Passim in Cambridge was great for folk and acoustic blues and Pall's Mall was great for blues and jazz. I could ramble on forever about those times, as I'm sure you could, but I'm getting really wordy here. :) Enjoyed discussing this with you!
Seeing a young person discover songs that were daily fare on we old folks radios is gratifying! Much of the 60's and 70's sucked, but our music was GREAT!!!

Akela...just like a 'suite of rooms', various rooms for different purposes joined together. The ' Suite Judy Blue Eyes ' is a magnificent composition in its own right. I remember hearing it for the first time, and knew I had to have it. As I listened to it on CSN, their debut album in '69, then the rest of the album - I knew I was a fan for life. And, here I am at age 77 still extolling the music of 'our day'. We had the best!

@@MrRondonmon I didn't know that! Never too old to learn something new.
Stephen Stills wrote the song about Judy Collins. He had been in Buffalo Springfield with Neil Young et al and Neil quit the band before they were supposed to play Monterey Pop. David Crosby had been in the Byrds and was on the verge of quitting and played with Buffalo Springfield at Monterey. Graham Nash was with the Hollies. They were hanging out and found that they could produce these amazing harmonies. All of 3 of them were great songwriters and singers. Stephen Stills was the only one of the three that was a virtuoso musician and played most of the instrumental parts on their brilliant debut album. In the glow of the record's successful release, Stills told Crosby and Nash they didn't play well enough to play on a supporting tour. He suggested they add Neil Young who he knew could really play from Buffalo Springfield. That's how they went so quickly from CSN to CSNY, one of the greatest bands ever. It was also foreshadowing of how much this band would argue with each other and how poorly they got along at times. Pretty sure some them aren't on speaking terms any more.
I'm not the first one to say this, but your hair looks amazing and you're looking great tonight! This is one of my very favorite songs and has been since 1970. 😊

Hey Dan..I have the Whales and Nightingales album on vinyl, my original copy in fact. Every song is a gem, but I especially like Time Passes Slowly..." ...up here in the mountains, we walk beside rivers, and sit beside fountains."
Another great harmony group that gets little love is Spanky and Our Gang-check out Lazy Day, Sunday will Never Be the Same and Like to Get to Know You.
"Suite. Judy Blue Eyes." is obviously a suite. It has 3 or 4 movements (changes in things like theme, tempo, timing, etc. signifying another movement) I have never before heard this song announced as "Judy Blue Eyes". The word suite has always been part of the title. Mimicking the phrase, "sweet judy blue eyes". I believe Stills came up with the Judy Blue Eyes, due to his appreciation of the beautiful blue eyes of the popular folk signer Judy Collins, of that time. And former girlfriend.
I love the way you don't constantly interrupt the songs to make remarks. You sure know how to appreciate the music of my day, and give very good reviews. Which was why I subbed to your channel. Thank you, DayOne.

SUITE Judy Blue Eyes... double meaning. It's a suite, type of musical composition, and she's sweet.
And, just a side note, your hair is so beautiful here!
Great choice of songs! Love your emotional reaction to some of the "older" songs. Music and emotions are inextricably linked; it is imprinted on our soul. Wishing great things for you! Any chance you may review Tom Jones and a few of his live performances from his show in the late 1960s? Many other artists to suggest to you, as well~ Many thanks! Charles
This song is a classic. One of the interesting pieces of trivia that has come out about this band is that the Beatles turned them down for their new record label Apple records. You needed a yes from all four and this group was only able to get three. They played many of their future hits to the Beatles. It’s really hard to believe. Paul just laughs about it now. You can’t get every decision right.
C.S.&N. were thinking about an album cover. Nash had seen a small house with a sofa on the porch the day before and thought it would be a great place to take some photos. They got in their car and found the house. Got out and took several pictures with Nash on the left, that didn't match the groups name so they wanted to put Crosby on the left and Nash on right. They went back the next day to take another photo but the house had been demolished in a pile pushed to the back of the lot....Oh Well.... use the first picture.

Cool CSN harmonies in this one. check out their wooden ships or almost cut my hair.
I remember when C,S&N came along. We all knew the individual voices from other contexts (i.e. The Hollies, The Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield) but the combination was new and magical. This group took off like a rocket, and the release of the Woodstock movie didn't hurt. Incredible amounts of personal drama followed, but the magic of the vocal harmonies never faded. Thanks for this.

Lacy lilting lady Losing love lamenting Change my life, make it right Be my lady For insight into the comparisons with song birds and angels found in the final verses of this song, react to Judy Collins 1968 top ten hit "Both Sides, Now", a song written by Joni Mitchell.
