Crocodile Of Wall Street And The Battle Over Billions In Stolen Bitcoin
On the morning of August 2, 2016 all around the globe, thousands of unsuspecting crypto investors woke up to find their digital wallets mysteriously wiped out. News broke of a shocking digital heist: nearly 120,000 bitcoins stolen from Bitfinex and the start of a manhunt for the hackers. It has all the ingredients of a wide screen thriller…only this one is true, and is unfolding to be “super, super weird,” according to one of the investors targeted in the hack.
CNBC takes you inside one of the largest crypto currency heists in history and delivers a revealing look at the investigation to recover $3.6 billion dollars in bitcoin. According to court records, the five-year long investigation ultimately led the feds to the Wall Street apartment of a young married couple where the IRS says they uncovered burner phones, multiple passports, hollowed out books and the private keys investigators used to access billions in stolen crypto connected to the hack. Heather Morgan and Ilya Lichtenstein were later arrested in the alleged multi-billion dollar crypto laundering scheme.
When news of the arrests broke and the world discovered hundreds of videos the couple shared on social media, the story went viral. Music videos of Morgan rapping on KZread as the so-called “Crocodile of Wall Street” and videos of her husband saying he’s tried their exotic Bengal cat’s pet food had everyone asking how this couple could be accused of such an elaborate scheme.
CNBC’s in-depth report delivers a revealing look at the duo from the rise of Razzlekahn, Morgan’s rapping alter ego to the day she bizarrely stripped down to her bra in front of dozens of startup founders, to Lichtenstein’s startup companies and the couple’s stranger-than-fiction wedding day. Eamon Javers’ reporting exposes fascinating details about their unusual lives from people who knew and worked with them and reveals exactly how the feds accuse the couple of conspiring to launder billions in bitcoin.
CNBC uncovers how a five-year investigation led to the largest financial seizure in DOJ history and what happens next as hack victims, the government and Bitfinex battle over who really owns the billions in recovered bitcoin.
On August 3, 2023 Heather Morgan plead guilty to money laundering conspiracy and conspiracy to defraud the United States government.
Her husband, Ilya Lichtenstein admitted to being the original hacker in the 2016 cyberattack on Bitfinex. He plead guilty to laundering the stolen bitcoin.

Imagine a bank gets robbed and the next day the director says "We decided to charge all accounts with 30% to cover the hole in our vaults and to add insult to injury if the stolen money is ever recovered we retain it and are allowed to pay you back in near worthless pesos instead while we make a good profit by selling the real thing worth hundred times more in the interim."
Shouldn't Bitfinex get it and put it back into the accounts they originated from, then letting those customers take it out if they choose to??? I mean.... I don't see how this is hard to figure out.

Dividends are what got me into investing in the stock market. The thing to me is, if you invest and have other income outside of dividends then you will be able to live off dividends without selling. Which means you can pass that on to your kids which will give them a leg up in life. Have over $600K in my portfolio as I bought a lot of dividend stocks before, I'm buying more now, and I will buy more when it drops further.

As a new investor it's always great to hear from a person who has gone through all the difficult times and come ahead of it. It's unnerving to see your portfolio go from green to red but as mentioned if you have invested in quality names just have to keep adding to them and stay the course.

I see any market condition as an opportunity. So far I've made north of $260k in raw profits from just Q3 of 2022 under the guidance of my Financial-Advisor "Corinne Cecilia Heaney ". Am I selling? Absolutely not. I have purchased growth stocks too a little at a time over the past few weeks. I am going to sit back and observe how this all plays out.

Polo. the thing for me, is when there is Outside income, enough to Abel about why would i need to Live off any dividends? i would not need Both to live off of. I would need dividends if i were a Passive too old to be a working asset (human variety) / Myop sell the Pitch "as is". // dividends are income from corporations, that possess enough Retained earnings to dividend Out. Since a tax cut will ONLY increase the chances of a larger dividend, due to the Retained Earnings only going Up, dividends (not cap gains) are the way to go. / a capital gain only occurs after a sale, or it is realized for tax purposes, but the sale can cause ego trip challenges beyond any gain in the electronic wallet. corporations CAN Never use a after taxed profit for any current or future tax deductible expense. so Every time there is a Corporate tax cut there will be a Better chance of a larger dividend, if margins stay the same. // margins got crushed and now the shareholders' concerns are honest but unknowing, as all the inflation is due to the increase of margins without increase in cost of sales/gross wages the Gross costs are not rising as fast as the Profit Margin Calls this era Process really is a new experience for many folks they do not remember the reagan era pre tech too pre toys too with every Fall, there is the Call to sell sell sell by bankers across all lands that need to pay off a Harvest u can annualize that truth by a calendar, august thru october And when ever a GOPer president cuts taxes Reagan in 1986 Trump in dec 2017 there be a CRASH in the Fall proceeding such Cuts October 1987 under reagan was worse than 1929 crash % wise and the trump Fall crash of 2018 was just another Hog moment Every Fall Every F Fall the same banks have to sell their holdings to afford cash on hand to pay out the farmer's contracts. every fall this happens and when the stocks fall in the Fall does any one talk about why? LOL B Cause they do not know the why of a simple truth every Fall so find out the holdings of the banker's (use public information) and seek to sell that before the Fall Out by bankers selling // or Short what they own, be mid august and then out by early October (do not be greedy, get out before the bankers get their cash back from the same farmers that they paid off/mortgages get paid all at once ). take months to find out the Holdings all the while to know when to Fold them and or Hold them walk away, run never count your $ while u sit at the table, there be enough time later to do that kenny r the Gambler // no Thing like the Game // u'll have fun with them dividends, u hear. ?

Patsies. Were all the Bitcoin recovered? Doubt it. Question: if Bitcoin is deposited, or converted under alias then deposited, or 'smurfed' etc. to overseas financial institutions that hold and protect their customers' privacy with the utmost regard (and maybe transfer around a bit between those institutions...would that not essentially end the evidence trail?

So, the info on why they started targeting this couple wasn'tpresented. The IRS literatelly got lucky, because of a search of their apartment. They didnt discover using any hacking or surveillance techniques.

Can someone help explain to me why large currency exchanges and wallets for them could be registered without regulations in place that mandate each wallet to be registered with validated IDs? Like, we had to wait for them to attempt to cash out the bitcoins via a Walmart Giftcard, and somehow Walmart has stronger KYC than a currency exchange? Second question, if a bitcoin is transferred from Wallet A to Wallet Z, even if in between them they were transferred into wallets B through Y before they reached Z, why couldn't we just freeze all wallets from B to Z and claw back or reverse all transactions made until they return to A? Like, how does this work, does anybody know?

KYC wasn't a thing back then. It was gradually pushed on to exchanges, and today there are still exchanges that don't require any form of ID whatsoever, they usually avoid doing business with Americans to avoid getting in trouble but they are still there and US citizen with a foreign mail forwarding service and a VPN could still use them too. Transactions on the bitcoin Network are irreversible that's what makes it interesting to own a crypto currency like bitcoin, not even the government can do anything unless they find the private key to the wallet that gives them autorisation to move the funds.
Omg that rapping is... goosebump inducing
There are two criminals in this story. First the hacker who stole the crypto from it's rightful owners, and then the US Government which also is stealing crypto from its rightful owners. Both are equally scum.
But some forget that this happened a long time ago, and now the exchange has significantly increased the security of its clients' assets.

I wouldn't go anywere near there even if they offered me money. Imagine waking up to an exchange that decides to protect their wealthiest clients by charging all accounts an equal percentage... This mathematically affects the little guy disproportionally hard. Why should I have to cover a millionaire traders losses??? Totally beyond me how they are still in business

And they still want to make a cashless society. "oops".
If I've learned anything over the past 2 years, it's that life isn't just about money, but money is an important part of life. It impacts every aspect of our lives. When I got my first paycheck, I knew I had to invest. I didn't think a few hundred dollars a month would add up. But it is. From 2020 to date, I have made around $600,000.
