CRKT Berserker | Review and Thoughts

Ойын-сауық

The CRKT Berserker is an axe that a Viking would...well, probably not use. But it is cool looking. It chops surprisingly well, especially after swapping the handle for a longer one. Because of physics. This isn't a super useful tool, but it is a lot of fun.

    I actually got this axe to replace the freyr. Thr freyr was too thick and I had to remove a lot of steel to get a chopping edge. But it did give me an itch for a usable bearded axe. Fast forward to the berserker. It's good. It's heavy, yeah, and the longer handle actually sounds like a good idea. But whenever I've taken it out and used it I've had no problems chopping or splitting firewood so that's probably why I'm good with the 19" handle. The edge is thin enough to where I actually got it sharp enough to slice and have maintained that level of sharpness since. Plus, you can throw the thing which I'd great. The berserker has become my go to for camping and other field stuff. Think I'll also take it hunting for when I want to chop up big game.

    I use it as a throwing axe. Nothing more. I definitely want that long handle to be honest. It makes it look like an awesome war axe

    I use the CRKT Freyr on my camping trips. It works well for chopping and splitting wood. This tomahawk looks like the little brother of the Freyr.

    This axe is designed just right. The small issues I've had were all user related. I did replace the handle, but because the original was too small from age shrinking

    Neat Video Man & thanks 4 the review! I like the Berserker’s design, but I agree that the design is kind of obsolete or irrelevant. But the longer handle that U put on it makes it more useful & I liked that. I own the CRKT Woods a Chogan Tomahawk & it’s a Great tool! A severe storm came through my area yesterday & the wind blew 1 of my family’s trees down. Several big limbs were across the road & the Tomahawk along with my Gerber saw back machete came in clutch! 💯

    It's weight is because it's a chopping axe not a tomahawk, a tomahawk is supposed to be fairly lightweight to be fast a maneuverable for fighting and a bearded axe is a chopper first and a weapong second

    I can appreciate something as simple and versatile as an axe. Plus for those guys out there who love historical pieces but don't want to drop a hefty amount to get one whether you're a larper or a history buff or participate in modern recreations of medieval melee combat sports (look it up, it's brutal) this could be more than just a good bushcraft tool.

    Nice thing about those though, easy to replace the handle. You could pretty easily give it a longer and heavier handle to offset that “too big” feeling, and I’d assume it would help balance it a bit more

    @@Factor85Labs where did you get that at? I just ordered mine and already want a longer handle. Was thinking of maybe snagging the 30” cold steel warhammer handle if it’ll fit

    I picked up a 30in sledgehammer handle at the hardware store, and cut off the top 4in that was sized and split to fit a hammer eye. It didn't take too much work to get the rest of the handle to the right size.

  • @wallcouldtalk
    @wallcouldtalk Жыл бұрын

    So, I picked one, two actually, up recently and the handle doesn't sit in there like that at all. It's about ¾" INTO the head. Both sat there exactly like that. I haven't reached out to CRKT yet, but that's my plan.

  • @Factor85Labs

    It reaslly depends on what you are using it for. It you are chopping and splitting wood, and doing general camp stuff, then almost any axe will outperform almost any tomahawk. If you want the lightweight maneuverability of a tomahawk (or just want to cool factor, which I'll admit I enjoy), then you sacrifice chopping and splitting performance. The CRKT Chogan Hammer is pretty light, and is a great tomahawk, but a terrible axe. The Berserker feels far too heavy for a tomahawk, and chops more like an axe, although it really worked best with a longer handle. My favorite tomahawk of the ones that I own right now is the CRKT Woods Chogan. It works decently well as a small camp axe/tool, but it still has the "cool factor" that I enjoy from a tomahawk.

    That's what I've considered in the past. Does it work as a useful tool, enough to buy? Thanks for your insight. Still undecided. Like you say, it is cool looking.

  • @Factor85Labs

    This isn't the most useful, it really is more a form over function sort of axe/tomahawk. The Woods Chogan is my favorite of the CRKT line of tomahawks as far as being a useful tool and still being pretty cool.

    If the hammer was at a better angle, then would it make the axe a little more versatile? Or is this still just a chopper?

    I agree with everything you said except that I dont think it chops all the well ( my light little trail hawk chops better.thinner edge and longer handle so not really a surprise but I guess the speed and better balance makes up for the weight i guess) but everything else 100% ever looked at slodge hammer handles for the same reason just didnt follow through.

    Well, it chops pretty well for a Viking style tomahawk, I suppose. Longer handle makes a huge difference.

  • @longrider42
    @longrider428 ай бұрын

    Axes are supposed to be head heavy. Makes chopping that much easier. All you have to do is guide where you want the axe to go, and let her rip. The problem I see, and I do not have one yet, but I will. Is the handle is too short. I will be putting mine on a Cold Steel tomahawk handle, which I believe is 22 inches long. Should make a big difference.

    Went to the lumber yard today, and got a handle for a sledge hammer, and after about an hour and a half of work, using a belt sander then files, and then cutting the slit for the wedge. I now have a much sturdier handle. Just need to touch up the edge, then find a village to pillage. Take care :)

    "Really cool axe for viking larp sessions" Nailed it ha ha. It is a real shame so many of these designs are just made to appeal to the collectors or wall hanger crowd. They could really make some practical useful tools if they wanted to. Take the Fiskars X7 for example... boring and basic but who knows how many they have sold. I do really like the Hammer Chogan, wish they would expand on a practical use line of tools. See the same thing in knives and other EDC gear... just a bunch of fidget gear.

    The Woods Chogan is probably my favorite of the CRKT tomahawks. I do really like the Hammer Chogan, but I don't like the handle, I wish it had the same handle as the Woods and Berserker. But, of all the many axes I have around, I use my Estwing axes the most. They are just solid, basic, almost indestructible axes. I have bought plenty of tacticool fidget gear over the years, and sometimes I still fall for the shiny cool marketing.
