What are you looking at?
This is an early edit of the short fan film "Critters: Bounty Hunter". What you're seeing is raw footage and how the movie looked on set. I thought it would be cool to share an early version of the film - something you rarely get to see. We all know there's a tremendous amount of work that goes on behind-the-scenes to make movies look and sound great, but you hardly realize it without having something to compare to. So, here we have it.
What's missing?
- The score is a temp score, pulled from the first "Critters" by David Newman. Recognize it? The final, original, score was done in the same spirit by Nick Soole. Listen to it in full here:
• Critters: Bounty Hunte...
- The glowing bounty hunter head is still a green hood at this point. I was wearing the bounty hunter costume, you can see my nose and mouth through the hood. We spray painted the hood green only days before the shoot so all I could smell were paint fumes... pretty gross. Later on we digitally added a glowing head to replace the green hood.
- There is very minimal sound design, only the parts needed for story. The robot voice on the gun is also me (we were a very small cast/crew!). I even stutter a word for the final gun dialogue.
- The footage is raw out-of-camera and uncolored. You'll notice everything looks brighter in this version compared to the final product. That's because the DP Kevin Stewart purposely shot it brighter, so he had more information to color and darken later.
- The gun shots have yet to be enhanced with some digital debris, flashes and explosions. You can see that we did the chair effect practically on set, but later added a few digital elements to really sell it.
- The Critter's blood at the beginning appears red. That's because we used a mixture of spaghetti sauce and fake blood on set, then later changed the color to green so it would appear more alien-like.
Fun Fact: During the Critter attack sequence, I was wearing the bounty hunter costume but ALSO puppeteering the Critter at the same time. So literally chewing on my own neck with the puppet. It was just easier this way so we didn't have to worry about trying to fit another person into the tight space.
- End credits, including composer Nick Soole's awesome "Power of the Night" cover, are incomplete.
Hope you enjoy comparing the two!

That must have been very difficult to see that mask in order to achieve the CGI head you were going for.

Yea, the mask was definitely a little scary - editing this cut and looking at that every day. If the mask didn't work, I wouldn't have released the short and no one would have ever known we even shot it.
