Critics need to chill on the Super Mario Bros Movie

Фильм және анимация

Went to see the new Super Mario Brothers Movie the other day, and though I can't say it's a masterpiece of cinema, I certainly don't think it's deserving of the negative critical reviews either.

Ehhhhh I don't know about that, because it is then putting down Luigi fans, he's a coward sure, but he's proven to be as much of a hero as Mario (which is spoiler spoiler spoiler). It could've been worse, but it also could've been better, they didn't need to make Luigi who is arguably the better brother with his abilities, be the damsel in Distress. Heck they didn't need a Damsel in Distress at all if they want Peach to be the strong independent women type (which I don't agree with much either, but also could've been worse), Bowser taking control of the kingdoms... just the plot A, they didn't really need a plot B, especially if Mario is supposed to be a hero, he'd do it because he wants to help people, not because he needs a motivation.

I think Mario struggling with the game level-style obstacle course was a good decision. Mario was able to parkour througb Brooklyn because he grew up there. He's familiar with the layout, and he knows how things work. The game level-style obstacle course has a bunch of stuff that's not only new to him, but also doesn't really fit into his view of how things should work; like the donut blocks. Yeah, he watches Peach do it, but using the donut block example again, he didn't know the donut block would fall before he stepped off of it until he experienced it himself. Well, that and I think he was more mesmerized with Peach's performance on the course, rather than the peculiarities of the course itself.

Unless the princess is the only one who knows how to go back, thus giving them a motive to rescue her. They just put the brother instead of the princes because it would give bad reviews if the main female character is not an independent strong woman. That's what I think. Also, they could make all the story about the mushroom kingdom instead of throwing to the screen all the American culture as always. But, again, if American values are not well represented, bad reviews. Funny though, because in the end, it also had bad reviews. (even though I liked the movie).

I'm actually glad that they decided to give Luigi the "damsel in distress" role instead of Peach. I feel like this gave Mario and Peach more time to bond and form a relationship. Peach being the damsel in distress works just fine for the games since the stories are simple, and it's usually implied they already know each other, but it wouldn't work here unless they'd met before or spent the first half of the movie together. It was a good call to make!

And even then, Mario, who did not grow up there and lived in a place in which he had never done or had the necessity to do the insane gymnsatics needed to complete the course (or even to live in the Mushroom Kingdom, the place where platforming is a daily routine), took one single night to almost complete it and adapt to the place. Luigi also adapted very fast to the Mushroom Kingdom, given how he was as skilled as his brother in the last moments of the movie, when both moved to the Mushroom Kingdom. In honesty, Mario&Luigi adapting so insanely fast to life in the Mushroom Kingdom was a much bigger power move than Peach completing the course on first try after having grown up in the Mushroom Kingdom where even the weakest Toads have better physical endurance than regular humans from Earth due to their lifestyle in which you have to literally jump constantly from one place to another.

But they still needed him because there was a prophecy. Mario did the same "stranger in a strange land" trope, which is fine. But they never made it clear why HE was necessary. Mario was clearly the brother that had the lack of confidence, not Luigi. Luigi was somewhat confident, just sometimes scared. Mario had a whole growth arc that spanned the movie, which included the training course. Mario was always more capable, he just didn’t believe in himself and more put up a front to be a role model for Luigi. I would have liked more Luigi action. He is a favorite. But I understand why they pulled a 3D World and held him captive until late in the game- I mean, movie. They needed a motivation for Mario. The movie did have a good story. It was standard fare, but good, which is fine by me. The draw was more everything else and that did not disappoint. All in all I had a great time. I’m more confused by critics saying it was like a game like it was a bad thing especially when that’s how it was advertised. What else were they expecting.

She's been trained to defend herself, but she also knows that she is no match for bowser, which is why she basically immediately surrendered after being surrounded and evacuating her people. She's better than Mario purely on experience, and she uses that to fight back. Bowser could have easily just abducted her and locked her away in a tower, but that wasn't his goal. Everything Bower did was to impress her, not imprison her. They hint at Luigis mansion with Luigis flashback as a kid, which will probably be explored more in the sequel. Even with peach standing up to bowser, she used a sneak attack to catch him off guard and only momentarily stopped him. Mario and Luigi were the real powerhouses in the movie, it felt realistic in a sense that she wouldn't go without a fight but be basically helpless, peach knows this which is why she went to the Kang family for help in the first place. It felt like a blend of her game self and the original 1993 Mario movie, all the way down to how they handled certain events and elaborated on some things. I also like how they did donkey Kong it didn't feel like he was just a jerk with no redeeming qualities. He just felt like he was giving Mario a hard time because he was butthurt about the L he took but didn't really hate him. It felt really organic how they played off each other.

Maybe if Luigi was't capetured Mario wouldn't have a good reason to stay and fight for the mushroom kingdom. Yeah it is a shame Luigi did not get more screentime. Maybe if they made the prison scenario different, in a way the prisoners could interact more with eachother and they have more space to do stuff, it would be possible to give Luigi more developement. However I feel like it was enough for him to feel like he is always burden and he should stand up for himself and for others like his brother does for him. The movie was all-ages friendly, but the story felt distinctly adult. Think about it: Mario is a middle-aged man with a dead-end construction job, he quits and dumps his life savings into the hopes of making it as a freelance plumber, and his career ends as soon as it begins when the dog interferes and makes them destroy his first client's bathroom; Mario is at rock bottom, and feels shame he let down his brother and family. Mario is a very adult protagonist with very adult problems. His conflict is about finally getting the chance to be the hero. It felt very weird to see this in a kids' movie, and noticing the lack of response from the kids in the audience really cemented the fact kids don't relate to mario the way adults do. Mario is a Midlife Crisis Gamer, just like us.

Personally, I think they hit a good sweet-spot with Peach, portraying her as someone who knows her way around, but can still end up in over her head. She knows what she's doing, but she's also just one person, and not "every Jedi." They made her skilled, with her abilities coming from a mix of talent and experience, rather than go to the extreme of either annoyingly useless, or annoyingly OP. Regarding the obstacle courses, I see your point, but in fairness, they were very different courses. Jumping over a trash can in the sidewalk and darting up a flight of stairs isn't exactly the same as running across falling blocks and triangle-jumping from one projectile to another. He went into it thinking his urban experience would help him, but ultimately, all that really helped him through it was his most important trait: his perseverance. No matter how many times he got knocked down, he kept getting back up, each time getting just a little bit further than the last. And thematically, I think that suits him perfectly. As for the critics score, let's not forget: these are the same people who gave "Cuties" an 87%. I wouldn't put any stock in their opinions on ANYTHING, never mind film.

Ngl, I was actually praying to god that this would be a great movie. I was very nervous of how they’ll handle this movie. Especially Chris Pratt’s performance as Mario. But after watching the movie, I was blown away. Pratt does a decent performance as Mario. Jack Black absolutely killed his performance as Bowser. And this is a hot take, but I actually do think that it was a good choice to make Peach strong independent woman. That way it won’t make the plot a predictable save the princess plot. But nonetheless, the story was simple and straightforward.

Some people have argued it makes more sense to have the person they need to save be Luigi because Mario doesn’t know any of these people and saving a stranger has less impact than saving a family member. Which is a fair enough point. Besides that I feel like peach would have a harder time getting a character in this movie than Luigi because Peach doesn’t have as much of an established character as is in the games and her being imprisoned would limit it.

Peach wants to bring Mario along because he’s human and wants to know more about the world Mario is sure she’s from, Peach is confident in her role but her identity is more of a sore spot which is what made her quickly warm up to him. She was raised in the Mushroom Kingdom so everything about it is natural to her but the natural world as we know is a different story. Same goes for Donkey Kong who’s extremely cocky and confident but is insecure thinking his dad only sees him as a joke. My biggest issue with video games turned into movies is that it’s hard to replicate that feeling of adrenaline as you’re making your way through an intense and difficult section of the game. That’s why I think Detective Pikachu worked so well. The game play into itself was much more lax compared to say Pokemon Ranger where you’re constantly moving with the game. I think that it was smart of this movie to incorporate a lot of references to the game so that even if you’re not interacting with the movie as you would in a game, you’re still able to go “Hey! I recognize that!” Overall, I think a lot of people were overly critical of it from the first trailer. It’s not going to go down in history as some legendary film. But it was decent. Also, the minions need to be retired lol

I especially like the part where the toads say the princess is in another castle to keep mario out. I do understand that people who aren't familiar with the franchise don't like it as much, but the story is still interesting enough. I like the way they explained mario and luigi being humans and getting into the game world. I was a little dissapointed about Luigi though. The parts where they were together were great, but I thought they were gonna do something more interesting with Luigi once he was separated. I fully expected some luigi's mansion inspired scenes, but he just gets captured right away after escaping the bone koopa troopas. I overall really liked it though.

I think the main reason for this whole controversy, is that the general audiences doesn't understand that when critics gives a movie 5 or 6/10, that doesn't mean it's bad. It's only mean that the movie is average at best. It's inherently the same as common people who's arguing that the movie it's 7/10, calling it: "fun but not great". Because the differences here, critics has watch a sh*t tons of movies that their 7/10 spots is reserved for something more prevalent. I mean, if you only had watch 50-100 movies top, that consists of Disney's animation, Netflix romances and MCU, of course your 7/10 spots would be more available. But for a critics that has watch 1000+ movies in their life, 5/10 is an honor really!

I think you're right, nobody needed to be captured for the film to work. Without catching Peach, Bowser can still be a tremendous threat. In Galaxy, he stole Power Stars, in Sunshine he stole Shine Sprites, so there's still things that Mario can go after even if peach wasn't in the equation. As for her being a power house... well... I go back to Mario 2, some of the more modern multiplayers and the party games/Mario Kart, so I'm cool with her being competent. The old 80s cartoon tended to toggle between Peach being helpless and "needing" Mario to save the day, but often times she would be part of the solution. Ah well, I just want a good fun movie so I think I will not be disappointed.

This is why i almost never go off critics reviews. It seems quite often they rate artsy-fartsy movies highly even if audiences think the movie is OK at best, and they often rate popular movies significantly lower than audiences. Critics also often have a strong bias against comedies, animated movies, and especially horror movies so they'll rate even the good ones fairly low. I've seen some great movies with critics scores of 30-50%.

While I agree with most of your points, I think Luigi being captured was necessary to give Mario a reason to even want to do all the crazy things in the movie. That's why their relationship was set up like that in the beginning, so we understand why Mario would go on and put himself in danger. You know... because he loves his brother. If instead Peach or no one was captured, there would be no real connection or reason to want to fight Bowser as someone, who just randomly came to the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time ever, knowing nothing about the world. Other than maybe basic sympathy there would be not drive for the characters to want to put themselves in danger. Also, I think seeing Luigi fail at the things that Peach and Mario could do with ease, would make him kind of a caricature for easy jokes and I think it would undermine his character. I think it was great they didn't resort to that.

I actually believe Luigi being separated from Mario actually helps with their relationship as brothers. It shows the lengths Mario will go to get to Luigi no matter what. And personally, I feel that's the whole point the movie's trying to make. No matter what, Mario would do anything to make sure those he cares about are alive and safe. You don't see that a whole lot in the games, mostly because Peach gets kidnapped a lot, but here we actually see Mario truly be fully established as a selfless and kind individual. He doesn't know when to quit, which can be a good thing when you have an insane evil king bearing down on you whom said blatantly that'd he'd make you watch as he kills your brother. Although, I'd love to see Nintendo put more focus on Luigi in a sequel and give him similar treatment as Mario. Maybe give the two the same motivation like for example Peach is gravely injured and they need to find a way to help her recover quickly and effectively whilst also working together not just as plumbers, but as heroes fighting evil like we saw in the final battle.

I'm glad that he talked about his flimsy history with Mario games because the things he complained about are things that are 100% consistent with Mario games. Bowser wanting to marry Peach is pretty consistent and was pretty much the main plot for Mario Odyssey. He even lied to his child about Peach being his mother. Peach didn't "get the Bo-Peep treatment," Bo-Peep got the Peach treatment. Peach has been a badass who can hold her own most of the time for a *long* time now. And when she can't she still does whatever she possibly can in the background. SMB3 has been confirmed to be a stage-play and they play tennis and board games with Bowser, but never any of the other main antagonists. (Possibly because those characters aren't owned by Nintendo.) The only thing that might not be consistent (I haven't seen the movie) was Luigi being kind of useless without Mario. Luigi has a lot of courage who can fight on his own. ("Courage" doesn't mean that you're not scared. It means that you push through despite being scared.) There was an entire game where he has to face his fear of ghosts to save his brother. (Only one game where he does that. There was definitely not a game where Mario went Missing or anything like that. Nope.)

Luigi in the early games was a scaredy cat, but as he came out in more games, he started to become more brave and confident. I feel if Nintendo decides to make a sequel, it will focus more on Luigi's arc and introduce more characters like Yoshi, Daisy, Waluigi, and Wario. Chris Pratt was actually pretty good as Mario. The trailers had me doubting, but the actual movie voice was good. I was also happy to see they gave Charles Martinet (original voice of Mario) a speaking cameo role in the film. Such a fun movie

They travel to the Kong Kingdom, and now need an efficient way to return back to the Mushroom Kingdom quickly, thus, they use Karts on the Rainbow Road as a means to travel back. And it’s not only a fun action scene, but it’s a battle that the good guys lose. It leads to the separation of both Mario and DK from Peach and Toad, who then return to the Mushroom Kingdom alone, allowing Mario and DK a chance to set aside differences and team up, and also gets all of the other Kongs captured, raising the stakes. The Rainbow Road fight basically leads to the circumstances of the wedding climax.

I absolutely loved the film. The voice acting was far better than I expected. Unlike everyone, I wasn't too worried about Chris Pratt as Mario, I was more worried about Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Thankfully, it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. And I'll be honest, while it might've been jarring at first when Luigi and Mario got the Super Star, with Luigi overcoming his cowardice, when you think about it, it makes sense. Throughout the first 20 minutes or so of the movie we see Luigi not being as good as Mario. Then, when he's separated from Mario he's attacked by the Dry-Bones, narrowly escaping until he's captured by Shy Guys. We then see a flashback of how, since they were kids, Mario's been coming to his rescue. Then, there's him needing to be rescued at the end by Mario. Luigi had been saved by Mario all his life, then when Mario needed it most, Luigi finally stepped up and saved him for once. Sure, it would've been nice to see a bit more of this character development on screen, maybe have Luigi have some dialogue referring to it, but it's not entirely bad how they did it.

She’s cool and strong without losing what makes her… well, “Peach”! The movie kinda did that, and I’m glad it’s not the annoying “girlboss” trope where they make the dudes look like chumps, and Peach is cute, but lacks that “Peachyness” from the games where she feels like Peach… then she feels like a generic girl boss Bopeep number 29.

Ikr, Daisy is the girlboss one. Peach is the sweet kind one. Why do they f**k it so much?

@@jeromealday614 I hope they gave Daisy the Peach treatment just to balance the two’s personality.

Like another person said in another comment I’ve read If a movie has a low critic score the film will definitely be loved by the audience

That’s not really a good argument when a lot of awful films have high audience scores on rotten tomatoes. Just look at Jurassic World Dominion, everyone online hates it yet it has a 80% audience score.

A rated R version where Mario cusses incessantly and Luigi doesn't want him to would be a surprise improvement for all those who cussed their way thru the games.

Just watched the film. And I can say this. It was action packed, visually stunning, Jack Black actually did very well voicing Bowser and so did Chris Pratt. A lot better than I was expecting. The inclusion of 80s pop song the era where the game was released was a nice touch cause it brings back nostalgia for adults whose childhood was that time. And it was nice that the bond between the two brothers were one of main the focus of the film and not a love story between Peach and Mario. Overall, a really decent, fun and worthwhile movie. Definitely better than a lot of Illumination films. I don't know why these critics are so harsh with it. The box office alone shows what the audience think of it.
