Critical Focus at Night with the SharpStar2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Join us in field as we shoot some night photos of the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains and the Alabama Hills with the use of our precision focusing tool for astrophotography, the SharpStar2.
Focusing at night can still be a big challenge when photographing at night and the SharpStar2 is a tool that can make a huge difference in the process and boost confidence and reliability of focus. To demonstrate the SharpStar2 for this video, Diana and I traveled out to one of our all time favorite spots: Alabama Hills, California to shoot some photos of the Milky Way and really put the SharpStar2 to the test.

Hi, I have purchased a Sharpstar2 but struggling with it. I have a Fuji X-T2 and the Samyang 12mm f2 lens. I can't see the 3 diffraction spikes when using manual focus and focus magnification. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Great tool, definitely a time saver. I normally turn the focus ring numerous times before guessing where the stars display the smallest on my LCD, and even then still not sure. Great way to accurately measure the focus.

I ordered a SharpStar 2 after watching your video and got to try it out for the first time tonight. I love it! It's so easy to use and works like a charm. I used it on my Sony 135 f/1.8 ZA lens on a Sony NEX 6, using the Formatt Hitech filter holder (85mm size) recommended on your web page. Focusing was so much quicker than before, so I could spend more time making exposures on several targets. Thanks for making such an incredibly useful accessory!

I see you use the 85mm filter set. Do you get any vignette when paired with a 77mm filter sized wide angle lens? I am trying to decide between the 85 or 100 system for my Fuji x-t1

hey ian you have inspired me again in life to look farther beyond what we normally see...I'm new to both photography and astrophotography but getting great results with all your video lessons...I originally used only the nikon 10.5 fisheye and it worked great...For my last outting to Maui I used the Tokina 11-20 with great results at both ends( I guess a good copy for the lens) I was going to order Formatt Hitech 85mm Aluminum Modular Filter Holder and sharpstar will that combo work on that lens...please advise

+steven adler The 100mm SharpStar2 is what I would recommend at the filter thread is an 82mm on the 11-20/2.8 so you'll need a 100mm system with an 82mm adapter. It should work fine at about 14mm+ for focusing.

Which size of Sharpstar2 should I buy for Rokinon/Samyang 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS? I’m not sure how to choose the right size.. I guess it’s 75mm… Thanks

It depends on which filter system that you would prefer. The Rokinon 12mm/2 has a 67mm filter thread so that means that you'll need one of the systems that's larger than the filter thread: 75mm, 85mm, or 100mm If the Rokinon 12mm is the largest diameter filter thread that you anticipate using the sharpstar2 on, I would recommend the 75mm SharpStar2 and the Lee Seven5 system with a 67mm adapter. Hope that answers your question.

But How do you know your photo came out to look good after the photo pops up on the screen and get the correct focus on your Sony or What the types of camera's it can be used on?

  • @LonelySpeck

Hi Yuri, there are a lot of other factors that will make any one photo good. Focus is only one of those factors. The SharpStar2 helps with focusing. There are other things that go into making any other photo, especially astrophotography: planning, location scouting, composition, lighting and even timing can play a role in the success of a photo. And then there's, of course, the goals of the photographer. The SharpStar2 is made to work on most interchangeable lens cameras from micro four thirds (m4/3), APS-C, full-frame and medium format sensor sizes.

But How would someone know that it fits on their interchangeable lens?

  • @LonelySpeck

The SharpStar2 fits on most interchangeable lenses with the use of a filter holder. the filter holder fits on the thread on the front of the lens. there is more information about selection of a filter holder at lonelyspeck.com/sharpstar-faq

Could you do a before and after video of the hoya red intensifier on the sony camera? I want to see if it only affects the reds. If its increasing greens as well, then its pointless, and in the pic they show online it looks like the greens are affected as well. But the description says it just affects the reds.

  • @LonelySpeck

    @LonelySpeck

If anything, it also slightly reduces greens. transmission curve here: www.kenkotokinausa.com/pictures/F0000032-transmission.gif The way it "intensifies" reds is by reducing yellows.

it's fairly sensitive to centering so you'll need a steady hand but it is possible to hand hold, especially with fast lenses and a camera with bright live view. That said, I recommend a filter holder for the best results.
