    This kind of video makes winning Best Picture look so much like an exercise in hacking an algorithm that it's hard to decide whether that's really what it is or if the appearance that that's the case is just a by-product of the phenomenon of Oscars predicting.

    I remember before and after The Whale premiered at Venice and TIFF that it would not get nominated for Best Picture because Darren Aronofsky films tended to be polarizing and the reviews didn’t convince me that it would get nominated for Best Picture. It was kind of like The Eyes of Tammy Faye where even if not everyone loved the movie, people still loved the performance.

  • @purekinema
    @purekinema Жыл бұрын

    My takeaway after EEAAO is that the basic formula of an Oscar winning film hasn't changed: It still goes to films that have critical acclaim, at least some level of commercial success, a well-liked and "sellable" cast and crew, an uplifting story, and socially conscious message. However, there were such extra barriers that have been weakened. The biggest change that EEAAO made is that genre films and movies with "out there" comedy are now suddenly in play for Oscar wins, as long as they also check the five boxes I mentioned. So which movies check those five boxes? We don't know the critical and commercial success yet, but these are the movies with potential: -The Color Purple (though a little derivative) -The Holdovers maybe (although cast and crew is a little weak) -Poor Things (depending of course on the story) -Saltburn (might be too niche interest) -Barbie (if uplifting lol, think it will be too mired in irony) -Next Goal Wins

    i think the real lesson to pull from the babylon disaster is that you cannot put too much stock in young or inexperienced directors. chazelle is still in his 30s, which in hollywood is considered a baby. at the beginning of last year y'all were putting him side-by-side with scorsese and spielberg like they were at the same level when it was just never true. those guys are in their 70s/80s and have earned legendary reputations from decades of consistent greatness, leading now to their positions as oscar darlings who can almost never NOT be nominated, whereas chazelle is not even 40 and has only made 2 big oscar vehicles. The same mistake was made with regards to florian zeller.
