Glad you mentioned The Handmaiden, I thought it was going to go mentionless through the video. I do wonder that if it came out now, given how Parasite has (hopefully) opened the door for more recognition for foreign language films (and especially Korean film) would it have gotten more nominations. Easily one of my favourites of the year and I think it could've gotten a whole bunch, like the cinematography is absolutely stunning. When you go through the movies that didn't even get nominated (considering how many great movies were included in the nominations) it gives you an idea for how strong of a year 2016 was.

I absolutely adored La La Land and I thought at the time when I saw it in theaters it had Best Picture in the bag. From the spectacular filmmaking with the musical numbers, fantastic performances that make you sympathize with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, memorable soundtrack and it’s still to this day one of the best musicals I’ve ever seen if not the best. Moonlight is an excellent and moving coming of age drama. From how Barry Jenkins did an amazing job with the storytelling and fantastic performances from the cast. I would’ve been very satisfied had La La Land won and that’s my favorite film of 2016. But I can’t deny how special it was for a movie like Moonlight to win. Given that it was an independent film that was getting so much hype as well as the first LGBT film with an all black cast to win a year after the Oscars So White controversy. I think it’s a good lineup of nominees and Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival and Hell or High Water were some of my favorites in that lineup.

I honestly think that even if Trump wasn't elected that Moonlight still would've won. Big movies like La La Land get fatigued all the time. Think about this year even. From the Golden Globes until right before the Oscars, we all assumed Power of the Dog was just gonna be another Nomadland and win everything. Sure some people looked elsewhere to CODA or Belfast or King Richard, but Power of the Dog was very far out in Picture until BAFTA maybe. Of course it's also worth mentioning that Russia's invasion of Ukraine and fear of nuclear war definitely contributed to CODA's win, but it's still possible that it or maybe something else could've eked out a victory at the end of the day just because people were tired of Power of the Dog. Same with La La Land and Moonlight. And La La Land DID win everything. There was no upset at PGA or DGA or BAFTA or anywhere else. The only place where Moonlight had a victory in direct competition in the lead-up was WGA, and that was a bit of a technicality. When it all comes down to it, La La Land and Moonlight were essentially equally loved, but Moonlight is the film that was more moving to people. It does have to do with Trump's election, but it's also no coincidence that this was the year after the Academy started to actually diversify their membership. Even in the first year of them doing it, there was a huge impact. 7/20 acting nominees were people of color, and that was the record until the 2021 ceremony which had 9/20. Four of the Best Picture nominees featured people of color at the center of their films. Obviously this is a good thing, but it's still important to see that this was a factor. And even without Trump's election, keep it real there are a lot of people in the Academy who are Trump supporters, or at least conservative enough to vote for him over Hillary. I don't think the nominees or winners would be changed that much if Hillary were elected. In short, Moonlight won mainly because the members of the Academy loved it more than they loved La La Land (it's also the better film but that's a different conversation). And thank you for mentioning The Handmaiden, that would've been my choice for Best Picture and it should've gotten like 13 nominations.

It's unfortunate... I think that The Handmaiden would have gotten a foreign film nomination/win if South Korea submitted it, especially since it won BAFTA that year. It'll be interesting to see what movie they submit this year, since they have two potential contenders in Decision to Leave/Broker. They probably aren't keen on nominating either, with the alleged PCW blacklist and anti-Japan sentiments in Korea, so we might see a completely random nomination again. :(

as much as I enjoy Oscar expert videos and as much as I ABSOLUTELY love La La Land, the way Oscar Expert mocked people complaining about the whiteness of La La Land, struck me the wrong way. As much of a cinematic achievement that La La Land was, the whole "jazz" narrative was very pervasive and I, as a Black person, DID LEAVE THE THEATETR THINKING ABOUT IT. I don't appreciate you disregarding criticism like that. Moonlight won fair and square and film is subjective, so any La La Land criticism is valid. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk lol.
