    The 79th Oscars were a turning point as the first time that both the Academy and cinephiles realized the raw talent of Mexican directors. Cuaròn, of course, would emerge later. On a related note, although I love all three, I think Iñarritu remains the most accomplished and the one with the greatest range.

  • @jongon0848

    @jongon0848

    They're all fantastic but they all have their different styles. Iñarritu's work I enjoy the most because of how he manages to tell complex stories of regular people and put them in intense situations. del Toro is more associated with gothic horror and fantasy, but he also has a tendency to combine real life elements and fairy tales as metaphors for his films. And Cuarón can do both areas very well, but he also has a strength of understanding humanity, teenagers, and capturing their livelihoods.

    Letters from Iwo Jima was a critic's movie - it surprised everyone when it won the National Board of Review (it hadn't opened at that point, so no one knew if it was any good; Flags of Our Fathers had opened early and was somewhat of a disappointment). It then won the LA Film Critics award for best film. Its Best Picture nomination wasn't shocking at all, though it may have been in 5th place. Babel had also underperformed, in terms of reviews. It was surprising when it won the Golden Globe (the only Globe it won, by the way) because it seemed like a movie everyone respected but didn't love. I wouldn't have been shocked if it was left out of Best Picture, and replaced by Dreamgirls. The Lives of Others was expected to win Foreign Film. Not a surprising win, despite Pan's Labyrinth's other noms. It was sort of like the Amelie situation from 2001. It had opened in LA in 2006, but just barely. Its wide release in the US wasn't until March of 2007 (as well as in the UK - it was nominated for BAFTAs in 2008) so it hadn't really made a splash, which may account for its lack of other nominations. Remember that, at the time, a committee was voting for this award, not the full academy. So there was a different dynamic at work, and those voters weren't the type to go for Del Toro's movie. I haven't seen Little Miss Sunshine since the theater, but my attitude about it at the time was that it was a slightly more entertaining version of the stereotypical quirky indie movie. Weird characters, absurd situations, provocative dialogue (ooh - grandpa curses!) and it was played for laughs while also trying to be deeply serious. I thought it was a middle of the road film that didn't really need to be taken seriously. But it somehow became the "awards comedy" of the year. Many thought it would ultimately win Best Picture, because it took PGA, SAG, and WGA. The Departed's win was weird at the time. Since there was no clear frontrunner, I rationalized it as a default choice for the Academy, after checking off Marty's name. Since it was an almost exact remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, down to some of the same shots, I didn't consider it to be any sort of achievement and I didn't think anyone else would either. I guess I was wrong! (I also came to realize that no one else really knew that it was a remake...) I loved The Queen - it's a perfectly crafted character study, even though it's quiet. I get why it might not feel as impressive today, but it was a prestige picture at the time that was, in my opinion, much more than the sum of its parts. It would have easily been my choice for screenplay.

    The Departed was my favorite film of 2006, absolutely well deserved win for Best Picture. I felt like The Prestige should’ve been nominated for Picture and Director. Casino Royale should’ve been nominated for technical awards like sound, editing or even original song.

    this the year with movies I most remember rewatch in my early years discovering the oscars, the movies are really appealing and it's outstanding have had a high score with audiences in that time, because when you watch them now, you see why. I mean, Babel, The Queen, Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed are films that I always watched it when they are on something. And if we talk about Children of Men, oh man, we'll have an well spread conversation, I mean it's a movie of a lifetime I think, prophetic and masterfully crafted.

    In regards to Frears’ nomination in director… I think you lovely boys forget the directing is not just craft, vision and technical achievement … the director has to direct the actors which are at the forefront of pretty much any film. Similarly… Bong Joon Ho’s win for “Parasite.” Many thought Mendes for “1917” because it was a technical achievement. Remember: directing also includes working with the actors.

    I believe I predicted THE DEPARTED at the time but I was hoping LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE would pull it off. It was indeed a great race because the rest of the awards were basically locks. However, and I swear this is true, I predicted Alan Arkin’s win. I remember some of us on GoldDerby at the time did have this thought process which was the following: -Eddie Murphy did get some negative press for NORBIT and how bad it was right as voting season began. -He also got some pans in the press for his acceptance speeches at the Globes and SAGs for being rather arrogant-seeming. -I also thought that with the snub for DREAMGIRLS in Picture that odds might be against the film winning two Acting awards. So, with Arkin being a veteran, I thought that maybe that would carry the day just barely...and it turns out that was the case. I don’t think Arkin deserved it. Murphy deserved it more but I would’ve voted for Jackie Earle Haley among the nominees. Arkin’s male co-stars (Carrel, Dano, and Kinnear) were all more worthy than him too and most of these nominees.

    the queen was less about people who like royalty or rich people and more about many millions of people of a certain age who grew up watching the real-life fairy tale of one specific royal: Princess Di. the whole world was in love with her because of her unfailing kindness, generosity, and humanity which hadn’t been seen before in a member of the royal family. her death was such an unexpected tragedy that the way the Palace and the Queen handled everything was… well it was honestly fubar and people were preeeetty much disgusted by it, hence the big interest in the film.

    Going to go over the Supporting Actor category for this year: For starters, Alan Arkin winning was DEFINITELY a career nod; you guys covered most of the bases with him and Eddie Murphy (though I will say, him walking out DOES explain the Dolemite snub a bit more). As for Hounsou, having seen Blood Diamond, he is easily the film’s heart and he gives an incredibly affecting performance. I’m mainly surprised that, despite two nominations, he is still one of the most underrated actors of color out there. Meanwhile, I haven’t seen Little Children, but I bet a lot of people are just happy with the fact that Rorschach has a nomination, and I’m honestly glad that they did end up nominating such a sinister role, given how they mainly go with the wholesome or sympathetic roles. I will say, I’m actually glad Wahlberg got the nomination. Beyond it being his only nomination (and the only one of the “apples” to not be nominated), I’ve heard a lot of people declare him the standout, and he’s been overdue since Boogie Nights and Three Kings. That said, had we known at the time that The Departed would be Nicholson’s last major role, there’s no doubt in my mind he would have won. If I had to choose someone to bump in and bump out, I would probably put Affleck or Sheen in and take Arkin or Hounsou out.

    Letters From Iwo Jima is my movie of 2006 but The Departed is ok. The only issue with 2006 Oscars was Jennifer Hudson because I felt her role was Oscar baited and simple. Besides, the other actresses worked so hard on their roles that one of them should have won. I mean Adrianna fought a heat stroke and a heart attack, Rinko had to learn Japanese sign language, Abigail had to handle adult issues in the movie and Cate knows how to be Cate. I respect people who defend Jennifer's win, but it's just my opinion and I know my comments will not change anything. At least I am happy that Martin Scorsese won an Oscar for directing.

    I mean Jennifer Hudson had to work very hard as well by taking major inspirations from Florence Ballard and interpret into the Effie character it’s not that simple and baited as you make it be from when her singing to vocal inflections to mannerisms to the wife range of emotional rollercoaster that was very hard and challenging especially for someone like Jennifer Hudson who literally had little acting experience (that’s not to say she none acting experience bc she was in productions from her community college and a local Chicago production of huckberry Finn). So Jennifer worked just as very hard as the other nominees

    Excellent video as usual! Personally, I wish Babel or Sunshine would've taken best picture, only because Scorsese was destined to eventually win director/picture/both and The Departed was the final nail in the coffin before the Academy would face tremendous backlash for not giving him any awards 😏 Also, really unfortunate that most of the casts from 4/5 nominees are unheard of now for the most part. I wish Adriana or Rinko would be offered more mainstream appearances since they clearly have the talent, just not the name recognition. I'd love to see how you guys break down 2002, where A Beautiful Mind beat LOTR FOTR and Moulin Rouge! Look forward to every video, keep it up ❤️

    Daniel Granados Castillo well it’s like Olivia Colman in The Favourite you have two characters that theirs circles over a central figure and in those cases were Meryl Streep and Olivia Colman in their respective films.

    I'm in the minority who thinks Alan Arkin indeed deserves his Oscar. He was very funny and touching (particularly on his scenes with Breslin) in the movie, and has that "kind-of-cool-grandpa" presence that caught my attention quickly. And yeah that probably was a career award, and also a way to honor the ensemble of Little Miss Sunshine (which won at SAG).

    There's a theory that Eddie Murphy lost because Norbit came out January of 2007 and voters saw that performance and were reminded of just how bad Murphy could be, so they decided to vote for someone else, though that's just a theory (and Norbit was nominated for Makeup the following year, which is really odd). Personally, I would have nominated and awarded Steve Carrell for Little Miss Sunshine (and also nominated Paul Dano)...

    Apparently this is also the reason why Mickey Rourke didn't want to do WrestleMania 25 initially. He was up in running for the Oscar for The Wrestler and I think his people used Norbit as a reason why he shouldn't be doing WWE stuff

    Keith MacDonald that’s tough. I’d argue it is better than empire strikes back. I think it might be Scorsese’s best and the shining didn’t receive the acclaim it deserved until later in so not completely surprised it didn’t get nominated for anything.
