    I work in film. There appears be gross negligence on behalf of the armorer with regard to on-set fire arms safety procedures. A loaded fire arm should NEVER be allowed on a film set as a prop (a set piece that is interacted with by the actors) or set dressing for that matter. Why is nobody questioning why the gun had a live round in it?

    @@juliawilly9151 They were filming a scene with a firearm without the master armorer on set, so the armorer didn't clear and make sure the gun, which had been used for sport shooting earlier that day, was safe for filming. It's incompetence across the board, but it isn't the master armorer's fault since they were filming without them there, which is a big no no in the industry. You are always supposed to have your armorer when filming with real firearms for safety reasons.

    In the past I was a weapon mechanic in the army, the things we had to do, is to check and to check the rounds, also in blocked state of the weapon. Now at the shooting range, there are very many safety checks we have to do, especially when someone put their weapon over. For any reasons, and I think they didn't have that, also, we are modifying weapons, like a lighter trigger etc. Maybe this was the case also? What I have learned, don't trust anybody who handles weapons, even they are experts. Mistakes are made very quick. And what I read about the gun handlers, they had a reckless state of mind, and that is more very dangerous.

    The very fact of someone seeing themself as an expert can feed into their making mistakes. The most dangerous time in learning to be a safe motorcycle rider isn't when you're brand new and timid (the second most dangerous time), but when you've reached the point where you are skilled enough to become overconfident and complacent. It's only later, when you have enough experience and humility and full respect for the dangers, that you become a truly safe rider. Put more simply, everyone handling that gun on the Rust set knew just enough to be dangerous.

    Was the gun used on set an original? And if so, could wear of the trigger components be a factor? Especially considering how many times the trigger was cocked in just this one use in this instance. The metals used back then would not be as durable as in modern guns.

    @@wascawywabbit0987 This was ruled out by the FBI from testing the actual weapon, in fact the FBI could not get the weapon to fire at all in repeated tests due to it's poor condition. Only when internal components snapped in two different places during the last test could they get it to fire. So yeah his story just doesn't add up, also the weapon was probably a modern replica, I doubt many collectors would want their genuine historic piece being subjected to casual handling like that. Collectors of historic pieces tend to handle them as little as possible and then with kid gloves, old items can easily be damaged and even if cosmetic any damage will reduce their value.

    This entire situation sounds like a "what not to do" movie industry gun safety on set safety film. Like many people have said, he was probably squeezing the gun (and trigger) while pulling the hammer back so it went off at full cock when he released the trigger. There were also a lot of rumors going around about people there shooting guns for target practice so live rounds in guns might have been on set which should never happen. Here is the scenario I see: Someone goes shooting, brings back the gun placing it with the weapons used in filming, it is never checked, assistant director (or whoever it was) picks it up without checking it, he delivers it to Baldwin who doesn't check it, Baldwin points the gun at someone, and the dominos fall. SNAFU lived on that set.

I’d be kicking myself for not checking myself, for not double checking! It will be killing me! That answer was NOT normal, and the interview was just a sad attempt at damage control (similar to our friend Elaine Bredehoft!). I also just can’t believe that he didn’t know that the gun went off. Again, what?!? I’ve never shot a gun, but I know there’s a kick back and a small explosion. Also, he didn’t even know someone was shot until many minutes later? I don’t buy it! It was nice to see a simple (layman) demonstration, that showed clearly how the action works. Seeing it lock at 2 points (safety and ready), takes his whole "it just fired" crap and throws it out with the trash. Now I want to know how a g*n that was meant to be filmed in close quarters ended up with live rounds. Your demonstration shows the g*n could not be loaded with an auto-loader. So whoever put those rounds in had their fingers on every round placed in those chambers!! With a little gun knowledge and my experience with this type of firearm if you hold the trigger back while cocking you can release the hammer and it will fire. I feel this is important as this was a fannable gun I believe. By holding the trigger, I could fan rounds faster than I could pull the trigger for each shot. Depending on the ease of trigger pull this is easier on some guns than others. Triggers I believe can be adjust for ease of pull making them faster or harder to fire. I believe this is done by weight 5lbs pull or 3lbs pull kind of like a bow only with a trigger that works with a much smaller weight spectrum. Maybe I am wrong here but it does seem possible, he said he wasn't going to pull the trigger but we dont know I suppose if he already had it pulled back which I think would allow the gun to fire. I also believe that a replica is required to have current safety standards have to be applied to it so maybe the replica's wont fire in this fashion today. And Alec was also using a replica so in theory he couldn't fired in the way that is being suggested. Someone is dead in any event and he had the gun. I do not believe Alec when he says he is firearm naive. Seems I remember him or family members in numerous of westerns.

    Something that I wish you had tested and shown for those of us less familiar with that particular revolver is: What happens when you pull the hammer back past the first click but let it go just before the second click? Does the hammer stop at the first click position or does it carry though and strike the primer cap? It might help us understand what happened if we "iron-man" his defense position rather than straw-man it.

    My friend is a retired attorney / professor/ former military member and has even written law books and is now a professional actor. I brought up this whole Alec Baldwin thing to him and he told me out of the hundred or so movies he has shot he has never once checked the gun. He told me it is absolutely not the actor's job to check the gun that the armorer is responsible the firearms and if the actor or anybody else messes with the gun it actually puts everybody else at Jeopardy and can mess with what the armorer did to the gun.

  • @tiryaclearsong421

    @tiryaclearsong421

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think there is more to this issue than saying Alec should have checked the gun. A lot of safety procedures that exist for using prop guns on set are alleged to have been disregarded: 1) The gun was passed from an assistant director to Alec. Where was the armorer? The gun should pass from the last person with custody to the armorer to the next person. Allegedly there was no intention of using the gun since this was for marking camera positions. 2) If the prop gun was used for target practice and/or range practice during the off hours, that's pretty egregious. The prop gun is supposed to remain locked up on set for the duration of the shoot and never loaded with live rounds. This is my own opinion, but a gun should really never be pointed at a person. Even if it's cold. The above rules are great but perhaps the film industry should rethink their safety regulations and procedures. Any scenes that require pointing a gun at someone should be reviewed to see if it's really necessary and strict safeguards should be put in place. It seems even more stupid in this situation though, because they were pointing a camera at him and checking angles. There's tons of cool tech that can move cameras extremely steadily in many directions away from human beings and around subjects. Also, for marking shots, real props are often not used because they are a pain. Especially guns. The existing safety rules around prop guns are pretty stringent. Perhaps he means this was a final check when he says "marking". Regardless, this whole thing could have been avoided because they should have been able to have him point the gun away from people while checking angles. Maybe they would have to move their chairs and laptops, and that would be a pain, but it's less of a pain than somebody dying. Alec had multiple opportunities to make a stop work call on safety grounds based on the disregarded safety measures. So did everyone else present. If the movie industry wants to emulate the oil industry and ignore the existing safety procedures/regulations, they will keep getting similar, catastrophic results. I really hope this case can be a lesson for future film crews to stay safe.

    @bina nocht so the way that firearms work is simple. A cartridge is that brass casing, filled with gunpowder and capped by the bullet which acts as a projectile after firing from the firearm. In revolvers, the cartridges are loaded into the cylinder of chambers, and when they are fired, the brass cartridge remains in the chamber, and the bullet is expelled forward from the barrel. With auto ejecting firearms, such as pistols and rifles, the cartridge is ejected out the side as the bolt moved back, and is replaced by a new cartridge as it leaves. I recommend watching a rifle eject casings in slow motion for a good example of this. Revolvers simply don’t auto eject the brass casing when the round is fired.
