Crimea: A Look Inside the New Russian Territory

Subscribe to VICE News here: bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News
Days after Ukraine’s president was toppled from power during the Euromaidan revolution, Russian soldiers and local proxies took control of the strategically important Crimean peninsula and surrounded Ukrainian troops in their bases. Unhappy with the change in government in Kiev and using the unfounded fear of the Russian language being restricted, Russia made a bid for control in the region.
Following an illegal and fraudulent referendum on whether Crimea would become a part of Russia or not, Russia then formally annexed the peninsula - a move which was widely condemned by the international community. Russia had, in one quick and mostly bloodless takeover, reminded the world of its power, and made the West in its poor handling of the situation appear weak.
VICE News headed to Crimea to see how the change in rulers has gone down with the local population. Some residents welcomed Russia and the prospect of a greater economic future, while others feared losing their freedom to speak out, and did not like the idea of becoming pawns in Russia's military muscle flexing.

we can see that Russia has other intentions. Actually Putin's main goal is to want Ukraine's natural wealth. In 2012, abundant natural gas and oil reserves were found in eastern Ukraine, it's Crimea, Donbask, Luhansk, Donesk, and Moldova in western Ukraine. that's why those parts of the territory that Russia really want to take are Crimea, Donbask, Luhansk, Donesk. And now they are closer to the western region of Ukraine as well, it's Moldova. Now, observers of world politics are reading Russia's movements, what they suspect is true, Russia's main goal is to target this area that has the potential for natural gas and oil. See.... that Crimea fell into Russia in 2014, but Russia ( Putin) was never satisfied with just one region, Putin also continued to rise up the rebellion he formed in Ukraine, and made the Ukrainian leader furious and inevitably sought refuge in NATO by joining NATO. because Ukraine feels unsafe to stand as an neutral country, Russia since 2000 after one year Putin became president of Russia continuously seized Ukraine territorial and Russia also supporting the rebellion in Ukraine to against the legitimate government in Ukraine. Ukraine will not choose to enter NATO if Russia as a neighboring country does not continue to seize Ukrainian territory. We can see the goals of the Russians rebellion it is to broke Ukrainan united and to seize the territory of Ukraine which has great natural potential. Russia and Ukraina same as like North Korea dan South Korea. (Russia) as North Korea and South Korea (Ukraina) . Most North Koreans choose to be South Koreans because they don't want to spend their whole life being North Korea, which is known as a country that adheres to the communist ideology capitalist . If we hear Putin's statement saying that his invasion was only to keep Ukraine from entering Nato, why is Russia (Putin) also stealing and seizing the territory of this independent country. If the purpose of the invasion was only to keep Ukraine from entering Nato, Russia should not have stolen and taken this territory of Ukraine, which has been independent since 1991. Invaded the country already independent that's so wrong , what's more, Russia (Putin) has also stolen the territory of an independent country...... Look at how deceitful Russia, the dictator, has acted so recklessly. Crimea which has been a Russian federation since 2014, many of them now regret and want to return to Ukraine but it is not that easy anymore, because all the leaders in cremia are puppets of Russia and those who are pro-Ukraine are imprisoned or even killed. When Crimea entered Russia, many foreign businessmen broke away from Crimea and did not want to invest there. Crimea is known for its beautiful beaches, now there are no more tourists visiting there, because they are afraid to see the large number of Russian military in Crimea, Crimea is only the center of the Russian military and Russia is also free to mine Crimea gas and oil. That is the goal of Russia to control the natural wealth of Crimea, which is known as one of the regions that has the largest natural gas and oil wealth in the world. We can see the different treatment that Russia did to Estonia and Latvia when they entered Nato in 2004. Putin, who has been be the President of Russia since 1999, doesn't even seem to hold Estonia and Latvia, even though if you look at these two countries, their position is same equal to Ukraine, which is in the middle between Nato and Russia. Estonia and Latvia are even closer to the Russian capital Moscow. These 2 former Soviet Union countries were not even invaded by Russia when they entered Nato. Why ??? because Estonia and Latvia do not have large natural resources to benefit Russia, so Russia (Putin) does not appear to be so adamant in defending these 2,,,,, WHILE Ukraine has very abundant natural potential, if Russia can seize it , it is very profitable for Russia. It could lift Russia into a country that has the largest natural wealth in the world. Likewise, the way their ancestors the Soviet Union taught Russia to dominate the world took away the natural wealth of other country and their federation, Enriched themself and made other poor inevitably depend on it. Thats why the Soviet Union collapsed before because of their selfish, greedy, corrupt, dictator, their union was broken and not harmonious because Russia as the leader of the Soviet Union at that time only enriched themself and could not be fair to the federation. See that's why most of them joined Nato instead of remaining part of the Soviet Union ( Russia)

Considering the fact Ukraine was ALWAYS a poor nation under Russian Rule, your statement isn't surprising at all. From the very first day Russia occupied Crimea, they have pumped money into the area to bolster the economy.....and for good reason. It's very important for Putin to show the world that the people of Crimea are MUCH happier under the Russian flag. But ask yourself, if the people of Crimea are so happy, whey does Russia need a military presents there? If the VOTE was LEGAL and within the standards of international LAW, why hasn't the Ukrainian government accepted it? Why did the EU and USA sanction Russia? If you don't learn anything at all here in the USA, maybe you'll learn something about National Pride and that being a Ukrainian isn't something to be ashamed of.

Michael Beers, Ukraine was never a nation . old name was Okraina, during Russian empire, and it means border land. Ukraine was setup as a socialist republic in 1917 and at that time, Ukraine was only half of todays territory. Ukraine didn't have Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Herson, Zaporozhie, Odessa, Dnepropetrovsk, Ivano Frankovsk and Lvov. those 8 areas and Crimea as a republic was given to socialist Ukraine as gift from Stalin and Hruschov. Donetsk, Lugansk, Herson, Zaporozhie, Odessa and Dnepropetrovsk were given to Ukraine in 30s by Stalin. after WWII Stalin took Lvov and Ivano Frankovsk(west areas of Ukraine) and gave them to Kiev . In 1960s Hruschov took Crimea when it was administrative part of Russia without any referendum and gave it to Ukraine. Today, we have anti communism in Ukraine while communists gave them status of republic and doubled their territory.

  • @kingofscotland2295

    @kingofscotland2295

    8 жыл бұрын

+Ancupola The referendum was NOT legal for several reasons: 1) Russian troops ILLEGALLY entered Crimea (then part of Ukraine) with hundreds of troops. Taking over government buildings and ordering the Ukrainian military to evacuate. This violated the 1994 Budapest Agreement, which Russia signed honouring Ukraine's territorial sovereignty. So right off the bat here, we have an illegal, foreign occupation, which used violence- 2 Ukrainian soldiers killed.2) The referendum was not sanctioned by Ukraine, as Crimea was still legally a part of it. Essentially, a foreign invasion force ordered a referendum without consent from Kiev.3) The referendum itself was a farce. It was hastily ordered, without time for real political debate- for example, there were no pro-Ukrainian opposition parties. Any Ukrainian attempts to protest were repressed, with people intimidated, attacked or imprisoned. Not to mention the huge amount of anti-Ukrainian propaganda, which depicted Ukrainians as Nazis. In short, it was an annexation- exactly the same thing happened to Austria under the Anschluss of 1938.

Marty Robinson Russia always had bases in Crimea...this agreement been made since the mid 90s. Secondly, Ukrainian Navy general defected to Russia and so did 70% of the Ukrainian Navy in Crimea. Those who stayed loyal to Ukraine was free to go. Again....no fight no conflict. Do you even know what an occupation look like? Or you choose to be stupid? People don't celebrate their occupiers, they don't rejoice the president of the occupiers and vote overwhelmingly to be part of their occupiers country. But you insist Russia is occupying Crimea. As for the referendum, yes Crimean people voted over 90% to be part of Russia. Why is this a surprise to you? They voted overwhelmingly to be part of Russia in 1991 again in 1994. You think Crimea got better since the 90s? Hell no. It got worst. Ukraine left that region in neglect...so only you and a bunch of clueless idiots who never lived there nevertheless can point to it on a map doesn't have an idea on how much the people want to be part of Russia. They never wanted to be part of Ukraine to begin with.

we can see that Russia has other intentions.

They moved the indigenous Tartars out of Crimea immediately after WW2 to create the Russian dominated colony. Later it was moved to Ukraine because of geographic logic, Crimea has little fresh water. Crimea suffered badly as an unrecognised sanctioned area, the Russian economy works for the well connected not ordinary people. Furthermore the sanctions imposed in 2014 has clearly degraded Russian military capabilities.

@@RobBCactive it is a crime against humanity to purposefully block access to water to the population. North Crimean Canal is responsible for 85% of Crimeas water. People in Simferopol had only water for 4 hours per day !!!! Not only that, but Ukraine also completely shut down all the electricity towards Crimea. That is why the Russian forces have captured the nuclear power plant in Energodar, they do not want to fire at the plant because they need it. It is Ukraine that is corrupt and sabotaging. Yeah, Soviet Union had some big problems, Stalin did horrific things, but Soviet Union is gone and the forced removal of Tatars happened 70-80 years ago. Putin is openly criticising Soviet Union and Lenin. The referendum in Crimea, 96% voted to join Russia. Do you know how many Tatars there are? 12% . Not every Tatar is an ukrainian patriot, this is a fact. Watch "Ukraine on fire" by Oliver Stone, it was made in 2016 I believe, explains the 2014 coup to the details

The anti-Russian comments are in no way justified. They can only come from closed-minded prejudicial peoples. Crimea is a land [always has been] majority native Russians. They held a referendum and the majority were in favor of rejoining Russia as opposed to being a separate [state]. The people wanted this so travel to Crimea and shout your protests to them in person-your statements here have no impact.

Firstly, a referendum requires that all of Ukraine would have to vote on Crimea. The referendum is a sham on the most foundational level. Second, this 'referendum' was performed under gun point from Russia's army. Third the referendum only gave two options, break away from Ukraine and join Russia...where is stay in Ukraine? Fourth the referendum doesn't take into account that 50% of the population didn't vote out of protest. Finally I would just like to say the your Glorious Russia successfully killed Crimea's economy, fooled half it's citizens, beaten any opposition to the new order, murdered opposition to the new order, ethnically isolated and stripped the rights of Crimean Tatars (who were there way WAY before Muscovites stepped foot on it) and finally forced people of a different nationality into Russian citizenship. The sad sad defenses presented by some of you people are so disconnected from reality it is shocking...this is what Polish, French and Jewish peoples must have seen when starring down the face of Nazi Germany. I finally understand my fathers fear, having to run from a similar situation in Czechoslovakia 45 years ago

"An illegal referendum" - Crimea was an autonomous region in both the Soviet Union and in Ukraine. Actually, Crimea left USSR before Ukraine did and wanted to join Russia in 1991. To avoid a possible conflict, president Jeltsin allowed Ukraine to keep administrative control of Crimea as long as its autonomous rights were respected. The referendum was legal and according to the international laws and UN charters of self-determination. It was issued by a lawfully elected autonomous government of Crimea and controlled by UN observers. The only reason the USA and its allies are calling the referendum "illegal" is that they don't like the outcome. If Crimea was "occupied" and "annexed" then where are the protests? Where are the "freedom fighters"? Where are the Russian occupying forces patrolling the streets? Those are the signs of an oppressive and occupying foreign force. Like the Americans in Iraq.

Give me the polls from the UN observation committee. from Indian observers, you know, people without a political stake in Crimea. Where are those? Crimea was an autonomous area - autonomous with certain rights. One of those rights was to decide its own faith. Crimea wanted to be a part of Russia when they left the Soviet Union, but Yeltsin (read - USA) stopped them. Instead of citing anti-Russian nonsense, how about you answer me about who invited the USA to Iraq? And, if anything of your anti-Russian propaganda was even remotely right...where are the "freedom fighters" against Russia? Where are those poor, sad Tatars, fighting for, oh, so beautiful Ukrainian rule? I can tell you, they freaking HATE the Ukrainian government. Ukrainian mad and uncontrolled nationalism have removed all minority rights in Crimea. Now the right is back, because of the Russian Federations Constitution. Russians don't remove nations from their constitution as Ukrainians do. we can see that Russia has other intentions.

I dont know if vice is really for the good of people or another propganda. Russia built 2 huge power plant to accomodate the electricity problem in crimea. And they built a bridge connecting crimea to mother russia. While when they are in ukraine, crimea is always blackout due to electricity shortage and isolated and forgotten in ukraine

Crimea was transferred to Ukraine in 1956 illegally, i.e. with violation of the legislation of the Soviet Union. If someone believes that the Crimea was transferred to Russia in 2014 illegally, then it turns out, as they say in Russia, “Bash on Bash”. Then tell this person that the question has been settled.

The Crimea has been Russian well before there was a country called the Ukraine.. The British, French and Turks fought the Russians in the Crimea in the 1850s. I have been to the area, as a military history buff I went there to walk the battlefields of the Crimean War. Yet in spite of the short time I was there I noticed how pro-Russian the people are, they speak Russian and many consider themselves Russian not Ukrainian. Khruschev gave the Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR without consulting the people of the region, at that time it did not matter too much because the Ukraine and Russia were all one country back then, the USSR. But when the Ukraine became independent then it became an issue with many people of the Crimea crying out to be annexed by Russia. Without Russia's mostly bloodless take over it is very possible that a rising against Kiev could have broken out in the Crimea, starting an insurgency that could have gone on for years and cost thousands of lives. I am British and I back Russia all the way over the Crime

Well, cause this documentary is clearly biased. They took several anti-russian figures prioritizing their opinion. Two of them were clear anti-russian figures and two were hidden figures being afraid of their future in Russia. They were polite and educated. Jokes on them, even they admitted that most of residents voted for joining Russia. Russians, on the other side, were complete opposite and frankly they were like "typical russian portrait" for what europeans and americans should think of russians: drunk hobo, drunk guys in uniform and old ladies. Plus the footage was taken in May, but aired in August. You can easily check that there are tourists in Crimea and everything is quite good, even better than it was before.

+AntiFascist Smith Russia isn't allow for proper polling, even though they strongly claim the referendum said 90% of people supported it. Strange how in the first year there were massive protests... and what's the issue with allowing proper polls? It'll just confirm the results for the rest of the world! But yeah, bullshit. The referendum and the high concentration of Russians in Crimea was an excuse for Russia to take over. They breached multiple international laws. Since when is this a thing? Where if you have enough people that descend from your nation you can just perform a referendum only supervised by the INVADING government and then just take over? I'm sure this means Russia would be quite happy in allow China to push into a few bordering regions that have a rather high population of Asians! Oh! Oh! And what about some of the far-west regions of Russia that have multiple pro-European and also support breaking off of Russia? Why doesn't Russia perform a referendum in those areas... oh right... that wouldn't be beneficial... quit with the bullshit. This was a breach of international law and is covered in bull. If you're truly treating the pro-Ukraine crimeans with respect; and if you the referendum polls were true; then allow foreign supervision of the area.
